WELCOME TO BUCKHORN!
Welcome to beautiful Trent Lakes, we’re happy you’re here.
Whether you are visiting for a day or longer, our corner of the Kawarthas will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
In just a short drive, you can explore the communities of Kinmount, Bobcaygeon, Buckhorn and Burleigh Falls, each with its own unique charm.
The hamlet of Buckhorn offers a sparkling view of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Grab an ice cream cone, do a little shopping, and sit by the water to watch the boats stroll by.
Beyond Buckhorn’s main street is more to discover. Enjoy some woodfired pizza at the local winery, or walk the river trail loop in Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. In the fall, visitors enjoy the Kinmount Fair, and in the winter, local cottages offer a cozy retreat from the cold.
Each season we are pleased to welcome returning families and new visitors.
Visit www.trentlakes.ca and follow us on social media to stay up to date on everything we have to offer.
Terry Lambshead, Mayor
On behalf of Council, staff, and the residents of Selwyn Township, welcome to Buckhorn, a charming Kawartha Lakes community known for its natural beauty and relaxed pace.
Located along the shores of the Trent–Severn Waterway, Buckhorn is a wonderful place to enjoy boating, paddling, fishing, and exploring the surrounding lakes and trails. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and take in the peaceful landscapes that make this area so special.
While you’re here, take time to visit the village, where you’ll find a selection of local shops and restaurants. Throughout the year, the community also hosts events and gatherings that reflect Buckhorn’s friendly, welcoming spirit.
Whether you’re visiting for a day trip or a longer stay, we hope you enjoy your time in Buckhorn and everything this special community has to offer.
Sherry Senis, Mayor
We respectfully acknowledge that Trent Lakes is located on the Treaty 20 Mississauga territory and in the traditional territory of the Mississauga and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nation. This includes Alderville, Beausoleil, Curve Lake, Georgina Island, Hiawatha, Rama and Scugog Island First Nations.
We respectfully acknowledge that the Williams Treaty First Nations are the stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity, and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure their health and integrity for generations to come.
Heritage
A community that respects its past, the Buckhorn area is rich in heritage, culture and local pride.
Located along the Trent-Severn Waterway at Lock 31, Buckhorn was once home to settlers and workers in the sawmill industry. Today, you can still find reminders of the logging industry throughout our lakes and rivers.
The hamlet of Buckhorn is on the
border of the Municipality of Trent Lakes and the Township of Selwyn. The main downtown core is situated on the Trent Lakes side. A span of two bridges connect the hamlet. One bridge spans Trent-Severn Waterway Lock 31 on the Trent Lakes side. The second span is over the Buckhorn dam on the Township of Selwyn side.
Buckhorn Lake may have gotten its name because of its shape. On the map, it appears similar in shape to a buck’s head with antlers or horns, Pigeon Lake on one side and Chemong Lake on the other.
The Lodge at Buckhorn Home Hardware for all your seasonal needs.
The Curve Lake Anishinaabe (Ojibway) community traces their origins to 1829 when a small band settled around Curve Lake and Mud Lake. The community officially became a reserve in 1837.
Curve Lake First Nation (CLFN) consists of a mainland peninsula and large island (Fox Island) on Buckhorn and Chemong
Lake. Curve Lake First Nation also coowns smaller islands located throughout the Trent Severn Waterway system. The total land base of the First Nation is approximately 900 hectares.
Exploring the beautiful lakes and rivers, you can find remnants of the logging industry that brought early settlers and workers to the Buckhorn area. If you’re hiking the historic trails, you can get a glimpse of the majestic granite rocks and tall trees that make this one of Mother Nature’s splendours.
Lock 31 is in the heart of Buckhorn and a short walk to amenities.
Buckhorn’s Lock 31 is one of the busiest destinations along the Trent-Severn Waterway.
Settler John Hall purchased the property on both sides of the rapids in 1828. Over the next four years, he constructed a dam and mill.
Lock 31 opened in 1887 and connects Upper Buckhorn Lake and Lower Buckhorn Lake, with bridges over the connecting channel.
In 1972, the once manually-operated
Lock 31 was upgraded for a concrete, mechandized operation. On the park beside the lock, you can see remnants of the old lock system.
The dockage in Buckhorn offers power to some stations but due to popularity, mooring overnight is restricted to one night.
There are a couple of parks located at or near the locks that you can use for a picnic or bbq lunch.

NOTE: Lockstations close to the public 30 minutes after last lockage and are unstaffed after hours. Authorized visitors are asked to exercise caution. Unpermitted access to lockstations is prohibited between 10pm and 6am. For emergencies after hours, please call 911 for police, fire, ambulance. Please check with Parks Canada at 1-888-773-8888 to confirm dates and times.
The Buckhorn area is the perfect place to explore nature from the water.
Take a leisurely kayak or canoe ride along the shores of our beautiful lakes.
As the sun rises or sets, you can see birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Many of our resorts offer watercraft rentals or are included in your holiday package. There are also local businesses that rent these if you’re staying at a cottage or B&B.
The Trent-Severn Waterway is a 386km marine highway that cuts through Buckhorn on its way north and south. Whether you’re just cruising through, dropping by for some lunch
or making it an overnight stop, you’ll get to enjoy hospitality and the majestic scenery.
Houseboating has become more popular in recent years. Taking a cruise around the lakes and through the locks, enjoying time with family and friends on the water. Anchor in one of the lazy bays on Buckhorn Lake overnight and enjoy the sunset from your own floating deck. A great way to relax and experience lake life.
Buckhorn Lake is one of the province’s premier fishing
The 3,222-hectare lake (often referred to as Lower Buckhorn) is popular for fall muskie fishing, early summer bass, and consistent walleye, crappie, and panfish action, particularly around weed edges.
Some of our resorts host fishing derbies in the summer to give your kids an introduction to the sport of fishing and can be fun for the whole family. The Buckhorn District Lions Club holds their Kids Fishing Derby at Blue Heron Resort on June 21.
Ontario Family Fishing events give you the opportunity to fish our waters without a license three times a year -- May 9 and 10; June 20 and 21; and June 27 to July 5. At all other times, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years need to purchase a license to fish. Check at the Buckhorn Welcome Centre to find out where to pick up your license.

Great Outdoors
Mother Nature has blessed the Buckhorn area with natural beauty.
Enjoy the fresh air of the country in many ways throughout the Buckhorn area. There are trails for hiking, snowmobiling, ATV-ing and biking, parks for enjoying a picnic lunch and one of the best beaches in the Kawarthas at Sandy Lake.
Hiking trails, through Mother Nature’s backdrop of granite, forests and rivers can bring you to your own sense of wonder. The Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Park is the second largest provincial park in Ontario. The entrance just north of Buckhorn gives you access to a 1.5km hiking trail along the Mississauga River. This site features a special interpretive trail that tells the story of the River, its history and how it is linked to settlement and the history of the Buckhorn area. There’s an entrance to the park just north of the lights in Buckhorn. You can find out more about this, and other area trails at www.alltrails.com.
For the duffers in the crowd, the Buckhorn area boasts several world-class golf courses, designed to take advantage of the natural landscape. No matter what your skill level, you’ll find the perfect course to practice your swing.
When Mother Nature puts down her blanket of snow, there are kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails, year-round accommodations and fun for the whole family.
Ode’naang Park is located beside the Trent Canal in “downtown” Buckhorn.
The park provides the perfect spot for your picnic lunch or to sit on the bench and watch the boats go into the Lock. Enjoy a slice of pizza or ice cream cone while you enjoy the sights.
For the beach sitters and swimming enthusiasts, Sandy Beach is the place to be. Sandy Beach is known for its expanse of soft sand that extends into Sandy Lake, which reminds many visitors of a Caribbean oasis of turquoise water. Here in Buckhorn, that’s due to the limestone bottom of the lake. There are no lifeguards, but parking and portable toilets are on hand.
“Have just finished a trip to Buckhorn, Ontario, and all I can say is wow, such a beautiful landscape, and beautiful country, lovely people, good food, great views, jealous of all of you that get to see that so frequently!”
Sights Of Interest
While you’re here, stop by the interesting landmarks and attractions in the Buckhorn area.
BUCKHORN WALL OF HONOUR Beside Lock 31, the Wall of Honour is a memorial to our soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Afghan War. The two granite benches amid the beautiful garden is the perfect place for some quiet reflection.
ADAM & EVE ROCKS A short drive or stroll down Adam & Eve Road, atop a short hill, are the remnants of the glacial activity in the area thousands of years ago. These two glacial rocks are named after the original man and woman in Christianity. Folklore has it that if a young couple can hold hands and each touch one of the rocks, their lives will be blessed.
THE CODY INN The Cody Inn sits on top of the hill across from Lock 31. The original house was built in 1905 as a private residence and in 1921, was converted into a hotel named The Windsor House. In 1975, the lodge was purchased by Francis Cody, who renamed it Cody Inn which it remains today. In 2000 the Inn was turned into a restaurant that offers up some of the best Chinese food in the Kawarthas!
BUCKHORN BUCK This statue of Buckhorn Buck was erected to commemorate the namesake of the town of Buckhorn. The area has a huge population of Whitetail Deer, making this the hunters paradise in the fall. It’s the town’s unofficial mascot and is popular with those looking to take a selfie!

One of the province’s Top 100 Festivals & Events, the Buckhorn Festival of the Arts at the Buckhorn Community Centre in August features more than 80 artists from across Canada showcasing paintings, sculpture, jewellery and photography. Craving a road trip? Why not blend a scenic countryside drive with some local art. The 41st Annual Victoria County Studio Tour is a free, self driving art tour taking place on September 26 to 27 and October 3 to 4. Studios are open from
10am to 5pm.
For those artists who are looking for inspiration, look no further. Plein air or plain air is the practice of painting outdoors that began in the mid- 1800’s when the collapsible paint tube was invented. Setting up at the lakeside park or a granite ridge at your resort, let your creative instincts guide you. By the way, Group of Seven artist A. J. Casson, who was a frequent visitor to the area, also found inspiration here in the Kawarthas.
Also for art lovers, the Miskwaa Studio and Open Air Art Gallery offers a unique experience in a scenic location with a tranquil atmosphere. Just a short drive from the center of Buckhorn, you can take
some time for yourself and relax by the river. For more information, visit www. danielmarlatt.com.
Local restaurants feature live music in the summertime to get your toes tapping while you eat some great food. The Buckhorn District Lions’ Club hosts Music at the Locks at Lock 31 in July and August on Tuesday evenings where you can hear local musicians and enjoy the ambiance of the lake.
For those interested in our Indigenous roots, a visit to Curve Lake First Nation should be on your agenda. In addition to events held throughout the year at the Whetung Ojibwa Centre, the Curve Lake Pow Wow, September 19 and 20, 2026 is an annual event that draws visitors from across North America. Traditional in every way, the Pow Wow features song and dance and story and regalia, food and sights and sounds.

Services
BUCKHORN COMMUNITY CENTRE
For almost 50 years, the BCC is the hub of this community. Today, the staff and volunteers offer a number of ongoing programs and special events for every member of the family. There are regular exercise classes, seniors’ activities, dinner theatre and craft shows. The BCC is a not-for-profit organization that relies on special events and donations from the community to raise funds to keep the lights on.
TRENT LAKES LIBRARY
Finding the right read to help you unwind is easy in Buckhorn. The Trent Lakes Library features the latest best-sellers, as well as a full selection of Canadian works, DVDs, and novels for every reading level. During the year, the helpful Library staff host a Kid’s Program every
Wednesday and, from September to June, the Cavendish Youth Group meets at Cavendish Community Centre from 6pm to 7:30pm every Tuesday.
TRANSFER STATION
In the Municipality of Trent Lakes, there are three transfer stations for your garbage and recycling. In 2017, more than 300 tonnes of garbage were re-routed into our recycling bins. That’s pretty impressive. Part of the reason was the new ‘clear bag’ policy enforced by the municipality – all garbage must be brought to the transfer station in a clear bag. And yes, the staff do take a look inside to make sure all possible recyclable materials are being recycled. Please don’t leave your garbage at roadsides!
COMMUNITY CARE
This home support agency has developed a comprehensive volunteerbased transportation service for seniors and people with special needs. The organization also offers fitness programs, Meals on Wheels and hospice services. Throughout the year, they hold fund-raising events that are well worth attending. For more information, visit communitycareptbo.org.
Visit the Buckhorn District Tourist Association website www.buckhorn.ca to help plan your vacation or drop in to our Welcome Centre.
Located at Lock 31 on the Trent–Severn Waterway, Buckhorn is a hidden gem in the heart of the Kawarthas.
Cottagers visit for relaxing getaways; boaters pass through the lock along their journeys, and anglers come to fish in the area’s clear, fresh waters. But Buckhorn isn’t just a summer destination—winter enthusiasts are drawn here as well. With well-groomed snowmobile trails, skating at the Buckhorn Sports Pad or out on the lake, plus ice fishing, snowshoeing, and more, there’s plenty to enjoy throughout the colder months.
The Buckhorn area offers everything you need for a memorable getaway, including great dining, comfortable
accommodations, local galleries, and family-friendly events. Be sure to experience one of Ontario’s Top 100 Festivals & Events—the Buckhorn Festival of the Arts held each August at the Buckhorn Community Centre.
