ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE

As The Sarasota Players steps into an exciting new chapter, we find ourselves at a powerful moment of reflection and possibility. With new leadership and an energized Board of Directors who bring both deep roots and fresh perspective, we are standing at the threshold of a renewed vision, one that honors our past while boldly shaping our future As Artistic Director, I am incredibly proud and excited to help guide this next era as we move toward an extraordinary milestone: 100 years as Sarasota’s oldest theatre.

Our focus is clear We are committed to strengthening our mission and investing in what has always made The Sarasota Players special. At our heart, we are not simply a building or a stage, we are a community A community of artists, students, educators, volunteers, audiences, and supporters who believe in the power of storytelling and the transformative impact of theatre and theatre education. It is this shared passion that has carried us through decades of change and continues to propel us forward.

This season reflects that belief. It is rooted in connection, creativity, and courage, celebrating voices both familiar and new, honoring tradition while embracing innovation, and creating space for learning, growth, and joy. Whether you are joining us as a lifelong patron or stepping into our theatre for the very first time, you are an essential part of this story.

We are playing on. We are building toward the future with intention and heart. And as we return for our third act, we do so together, grateful for where we’ve been, inspired by where we’re going, and ready to continue telling stories that bring us closer, challenge us, and remind us why live theatre matters.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

The Crucible is a bear of a play. The language is dense, written in the 1950s to sound like 1692 (thanks, Arthur Miller), and the subject matter is weighty, layered, and deeply human. No character is ever quite what they seem at first. As the story unfolds, we see more of their deception, their justification, and sometimes their goodness, despite that very human tendency to stumble.

One of the things I love most about community theatre is the opportunity to take on work like this. A play by a beloved American playwright that’s also a historical drama about the Salem witch trials and an allegory for McCarthyism? It’s big It asks a lot of everyone involved. And together, we leaned into that challenge, exploring these characters, their relationships, and the complicated emotions that drive them. We all learned something along the way. I know this process stretched me as a director, and I believe it did the same for our incredibly committed cast.

Our goal has been to make this story feel immediate, to remind us that it’s just as relevant today as it was in the 1600s or the 1950s. From the staging to the costumes, we’ve worked to place you right inside the world of the play: the meeting house, the Proctors’ home, the jail. While rooted in the period, you may notice small visual choices that feel familiar, subtle cues that help connect these characters to how we see people today.

Whether you already love this play or you’re someone who didn’t quite “get it” in high school, you’re welcome here. We want this story to feel alive, urgent, and accessible.

At its core, this play should simmer with intensity, like a crucible itself. Pressure builds. Heat rises. And what’s inside each character is revealed. I hope you leave with a deeper understanding, a renewed appreciation, and maybe even a sense of wonder at this story and the history it reflects. Because in many ways, it is our history.

Thank you for supporting live, purely local theatre. We appreciate you more than you know.

Amanda Heisey (Director) is thrilled to have the opportunity to direct such a classic, timely piece of American theatre. Past directorial credits include: Little Women: The Broadway Musical, Miracle on 34 Street: The Live Musical Radio Play, and Forbidden Broadway (The Sarasota Players), Urinetown (Dingbat Theatre Project) and Yard Sale the Musical (Venice Theatre). Favorite theatrical roles include: Sally Bowles - Cabaret (Sarasota Players) Velma Kelley - Chicago, Yitzhak - Hedwig..., (Dingbat Theatre Project), Maggie the Cat - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Magenta - The Rocky Horror Show (Venice Theatre). Jill Castle (Costume Designer) joined The Players in April 2025, assuming the roles of Costume Shop Manager and Costume Designer. Her professional background includes extensive experience in costume design, costume shop management, and a love for vintage and historical costuming with a twist. Designing with Director Amanda Heisey's vision opened up the traditional looks for women in The Crucible and gave way to more exciting colors creating multiple layers to each character's story. Notable design and builds for The Players during the 96th season- Beetlejuice Jr, The Little Mermaid Jr, Metamorphoses, Happy Endings Wedding Chapel, Les Mis School Edition, Annie, Wedding Singer, Sleepy Hollow and the 2025-2026 season for Sarasota Jewish Theatre. Beyond her work within the costume shop she can be found engaging in various professional dance and character entertainment activities throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Ariella Pizarro-Johnston (Dramaturg) has been honored to be the dramaturg for this production of The Crucible While she has been a part of past productions as a cast member, including American Idiot and Rent, it has been a joy to assist this production in a new capacity. As a high school English Teacher who teaches The Crucible every year, she believes that it is integral for her students to have a deep understanding of Arthur Miller's allegorical intentions in writing the play, the historical and social context of the Salem Witch Trials, and the play's unfortunate recurring relevance. She is thankful to have been able to merge her love of education and the arts with the support of Amanda and the rest of this incredibly talented cast and crew.
