Music Director Designate Paolo Bortolameolli opens a new era in The Phoenix Symphony’s history with Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, a powerful blend of lyricism, rhythm and rich orchestration. The program begins with Glinka’s dazzling Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila. Rachmaninoff ’s Piano Concerto No. 3, featured in the film Shine and famed as one of the repertoire’s most demanding works, features Russian pianist Olga Kern, Gold Medalist of the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, as soloist in this formidable and widely respected concerto.

Grammy Award–winning violinist Jennifer Koh, winner of the 1994 International Tchaikovsky Competition, returns to perform Barber’s beloved Violin Concerto, known for its lyrical beauty and restless momentum. Schumann’s joyous “Spring” Symphony No. 1, completed in just four days, radiates fresh optimism. The program also includes Anna Clyne’s mesmerizing This Midnight Hour and Silvestre Revueltas’s Sensemayá, the Mexican composer’s best known work.

MENDELSSOHN: The Hebrides Overture, Op. 26 “Fingal’s Cave”
MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, Op. 56 “Scottish”
Mendelssohn’s 1829 trip to the Scottish Highlands inspired two evocative works on this program: The Hebrides Overture and his moody, romantic “Scottish” Symphony No. 3. Max Bruch, though he visited Scotland only after premiering his Scottish Fantasy in 1881, based the popular work on four traditional folk tunes. Violinist Rolf Haas, concertmaster of The Phoenix Symphony, is soloist in a program led by Anthony Parnther, music director of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra and a frequent conductor of film and TV scores.

STRAVINSKY: The Rite of Spring
Many first discovered Stravinsky’s groundbreaking The Rite of Spring through Disney’s Fantasia. Premiered in 1913 as a ballet, its pounding rhythms, whirling melodies and snarling harmonies are now best known in concert form. Music Director Designate Paolo Bortolameolli also conducts two works by contemporary Mexican composer Arturo Márquez: Danzón No. 8 and the Místico y Profano Guitar Concerto, featuring guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villega, who collaborated with Márquez and premiered the piece in Mexico City in 2025.

Guest conductor Katharina Wincor leads Shostakovich’s jubilant Festive Overture and Auerbach’s Icarus, inspired by the myth of the boy who flew too close to the sun. The program closes with Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin, an exhilarating concert hall showpiece driven by intense rhythms and folk tinged melodies.

Guest conductor Carlos Izcaray leads three works shaped by turbulent times, including his own Geometric Unity, composed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, dubbed the “Symphony of Independence,” emerged as Finland sought freedom from Russian rule and became his most frequently performed symphony. Violinist Bella Hristova, winner of the Michael Hill International Competition, returns to perform Britten’s youthful Violin Concerto, a deeply emotional work written as war loomed and premiered shortly after World War II began.

Composed after a major health scare and just before he met his future wife, the work features the Adagietto, one of the most sublime moments in classical music. Paolo Bortolameolli concludes the season with the symphony that prompted Herbert von Karajan to say, “You forget that time has passed.”
