Community invited to Remarkable Celebration Paris Community Church, also known as the #ForParis Centre, unveils stunning renovations, everyone welcome to attend this Sunday By Casandra Turnbull It was a transformation for the ages. A classic Paris relic was pumped full of new life by way of a renovation project that not only spruced up the building’s interior and exterior facade but also helped the church reemerge with a new sense of community connection. The Paris Presbyterian Church congregation started the major renovation project in August 2020 and while a majority of the work is complete, there are still a few ongoing projects that should wrap up by next year.

The first part of the renovation took place during the pandemic and was appropriately timed when services were being conducted virtually – which allowed for a full renovation of the sanctuary platform, including some much-needed repairs and upgrades to the audio-visual technical capabilities. The exterior envelope of the building, including much of the masonry and portions of the roof and gutters was restored as well. The main floor underwent a significant layout change to include a universal (accessible) washroom, an upgrade kitchen and storage areas and to allow for a more open and inviting gathering space. In the months ahead, there are plans to replace the beam and ceiling in the Emily Street foyer, cosmetic upgrades to the upstairs offices, install a bathroom on the balcony level, complete the fire alarm system and replace the exterior stairs and railing (in 2024). With a price tag of $2.5 million so far, this project was a labour of love and financial commitment and members of the church want to share the amazing outcome with the community. Greeting ghouls and goblins! You might be accustomed to joining me on a journey through the world of craft beers and local brews, but this time, we're venturing into the ghostly and ghoulish realm of Halloween. It's my favourite "holiday", a time when the ordinary takes a haunting turn and yards transform into eerie wonderlands. Today, we're diving into the world of both festively wonderful and spinechilling yard displays and
uncovering the secrets of the South Ward Scare map, all while raising a glass to a couple of Halloweeninspired brews. So, grab your lantern, and let's explore the spectral sights, sips, and sensations that make Halloween so uniquely delightful! South end of Paris, just south of Dundas St and west of the bridge, was once known as the South Ward and with the help of some festive neighbours it is now a chilling wonderland, with houses decorated more and more each year. Whether you're new to the neighbourhood or a seasoned resident, it's time to delve into the spectral sights and sounds of Halloween in Paris, Ontario. Successful Apple Day for Paris Scouts It was a damp night on October 13th but that didn’t stop the 1st Paris Scouting Group from fulfilling their mission to fundraise for Apple Day 2023. The organization sent a thank you to the local businesses who supported the youth by allowing them to fundraise outside and to all who donated. COMMUNITY NEWS GrandBridge Energy announces new President and CEO Brantford and Cambridge, ON (Monday, October 23, 2023) – The Board of Directors for GrandBridge Energy Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Hughes to the role of President and CEO effective immediately. “Following an extensive search by the Board, we are pleased to welcome Sarah to her new role as President and CEO of GrandBridge Energy. Sarah’s wealth of experience in the utility sector, strategic insights into the organization and strong relationships with our key stakeholders well position her to successfully lead GrandBridge Energy through the energy transition that is underway,” said Terry Young, Chair of the GrandBridge Energy Board of Directors.

COMMUNITY NEWS Date set for festive tradition downtown Paris Jingle Bell Night spreads Holiday cheer throughout downtown and it all starts with the popular tree lighting ceremony at Cobblestone Common Nov. 17th MEDIA RELEASE The merchants of the Downtown Paris BIA invite everyone to experience the magic of the holidays at the annual Jingle Bell Night on Friday, November 17. It promises to be pretty... festive! The fun gets underway at 5pm, with the (unofficial) start of the holiday calendar taking place at 7 pm with the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Cobblestone Common. Mayor David Bailey will be on hand to flick the switch, and the event also features live music, singing, and a few surprises. Once the tree is lit, the real fun begins. Shoppers will have a chance to win one of many Shopping Spree Giveaways offered by downtown merchants. Carolers and elves will spread good cheer up and down the street, handing out candy canes and special coupons. Many stores will stay open late for the evening, offering refreshments, great gift ideas and some solid bargains. “Jingle Bell Night is one of our most popular events,” said Matt Cummings, Chair of the Downtown Paris BIA. “It brings the community together to experience the heart of our community during the most wonderful time of the year. The lights, music, and general good vibes create memories that last for years to come. In addition to the festivities,

Nestled between the winding banks of the Grand and Nith Rivers, the charming town of Paris has a rich history dating back nearly two centuries. Today, as we stroll through its vibrant and bustling downtown streets, it's hard to imagine that this area was once dominated by industrial mills of every kind, foundries, distilleries and industrial shops of every description all capitalizing on the waterpower generated by two dams on the Nith river and series of race ways that divided the town into what was known as “Coney Island”. However, a closer look into the past reveals a captivating tale of transformation, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the community. Before the Great Fire of 1900, the downtown core of Paris looked vastly different. Industrial structures stretched across the landscape, but one man's vision would leave an indelible mark on the town's future. Hiram Capron, fondly known as "King Capron," bequeathed a piece of land to the Town of Paris, which is now the cherished King's Ward Park. In the 1860s, a market building was erected, symbolizing Capron’s dream of creating a bustling center

S P O RT S Celebrating the 2023 Paris Sports Hall of Fame Inductees The last of three induction ceremonies for the 2023 Brant Sports Hall of Fame wrapped up on Thursday, making the last stop in Paris to honour local athletes. Hall of Famers are both athletes or community builders of sport. Each year a committee reviews a list of nominations and determines who to induct, representing communities across the County. Don Pancoe was the first to be awarded in St. George on September 28th, followed by Keith and Elaine Hall in Burford on October 7th. This past Thursday, October 26th, five individuals were inducted into the Hall of Fame: Robert Perley, Dennis McKinna, Linda Madden, Bill Cracknell and Mark Stewart. The Panthers continue with their run game and Jack Kelly scores a TD and a 28-17 lead with 5:84 left in the 4th quarter. The Eagles quickly move the ball down the field on passes and score a TD, cutting the Panther led to three, make it 28-25 for Paris with 3:40 left in the game. Paris’ next series failed to move the ball. On a punt St John’s started their drive from centre field and with 10 completes and a 57-yard pass for a TD, St. John’s took the four-point lead and eventual win 32-28. In the end the Paris’ defence couldn’t stop the devastating long passes that the Eagles threw at them. Kudos to Jack Kelly, who ran for over 150 yards.

S P O RT S Meet the Brantford Bisons’ Inaugural Women’s Tackle Football team
Women’s tackle football debuted in Brantford last Saturday. The Bison football organization hosted an exhibition game against the Peel Panthers Women Under 16 team. The opponents, who play in the Ontario Women’s Football league (OWFL) in the spring, obviously were more experienced than the home team, who showed a marked improvement of play as the controlled scrimmage went along. In the end, the young Bison ladies had a great time debuting the sport for women. Currently the OWFL has two divisions: Under 16 and Under 19. Provincial Disc Golf Championships in Paris this weekend Just a reminder, especially with the beautiful weather we’re having lately – giving everyone the itch to get outside, both the Paris and Mohawk Park disc golf courses will be closed to the public this weekend as the 2023 Ontario Provincial Disc Golf Championships are hosted locally. The public’s invited to watch but the courses will not be playable. If you want to support some Paris athletes, watch for Jennifer Snow in the Women’s Pro 40+ division, Mark Ciszek, in the Mixed Pro 50+ division, Brian Tucker in the Mixed Amateur 70+ and Brooklyn O’Krafka in the Girls’ Junior division. O’Brien was selected by the Bulldogs in the 1st Round, 8th overall in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection Draft from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the GTHL where he captained his JRC squad to both the GTHL & OHL Cup Championships, being named OHL Cup MVP in the process. Already showing his incredible hockey intellect & offensive prowess at the OHL, O’Brien has been nothing short of outstanding to open his rookie season in Brantford. Recording 2 goals & 4 assists for 6 points in 9 games, O’Brien has already become a staple of the Bulldogs offense, including the top power-play unit. The third 8th overall pick in Bulldogs history, O’Brien continues to follow the legacy paved before him joining the previous pair of Matthew Strome & Ryan Winterton in being named to Team Canada for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. In the charming town of Paris, Ontario, where artistry thrives and creativity blossoms, I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with the talented local artist, Jennifer Budd. In her sun-drenched sunroom, over a steaming cup of tea, Jennifer shared with me the enchanting story of her lifelong artistic journey and her deep-rooted love for creating art with wool. Jennifer's artistic adventure began in a quaint Scottish village school when she was just four years old. The memory that ignited her passion for art was the sight of vibrant balls of yarn peeking out from a craft cupboard. The task at hand: choosing the perfect hue for her very first knitting project. She settled on a green-blue twist, reminiscent of the sea and the forest, setting her on a lifelong path of crafting with wool. It was difficult for her little hands and she didn’t realize that her

A RT S & C U LT U R E Their moments together, spent painting and savouring each other's company, laid the foundation for Jennifer's creative journey. “Inspiration for my work comes from a deep love for Scotland, the ever-changing light, movement and natural beauty of its landscape.” Jennifer's artistry has since evolved to embrace the Canadian landscapes of Ontario, where she has made her home for nearly four decades. The ever-changing light, movement, and natural beauty of Scotland and Ontario serve as her primary sources of inspiration. She paints with wool, using the ancient craft of felting to create compositions made of fibre. The felt she creates is further adorned with needle-felted wool, silk, and hand embroidery. These "woolscapes" are textured, soft, and richly colourful, sharing the stories of her adventures and the places she has explored. Jennifer's art has taken her to fascinating destinations and presented her with the opportunity to share her craft with others. Notable among these experiences was her time spent on the Isle of Fetlar, in the Shetland Islands, working with local women who were sheep farmers. Her artistic journey has taken her to the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides as well, where she led a workshop for local seniors and two solo exhibitions. Reflecting on her current hometown of Paris, Jennifer radiates gratitude for the support and encouragement she has received from fellow artists and artisans. Paris has been her home since 1988, and she describes it as a place filled with skilled, talented, and passionate individuals dedicated to their crafts. She believes Paris has a magnetic allure for an exceptional community of artists and artisans. Jennifer's hope for the future of Paris's thriving arts scene is the establishment of an Arts Council.
