The hierarchy of what it to be sung at Mass The sung portions of the Mass have varying degrees of importance as to what should be sung. The first on the list is the Ordinary, that is the parts of the Mass that do not change from one day to another, the Kyrie, Gloria, Creed, Eucharistic Acclamations, Agnus Dei. Yes, the Creed is expected to be sung at Sunday Mass, especially for solemnities. The propers of the Mass (the parts that change each week) are the second most important parts of the Mass to be sung. The antiphons and their accompanying psalm verses that occur at the Entrance, Offertory, and Communion are prescribed in the Missal and are linked scripturally, thematically or theologically to the readings of the day. On certain feasts and holy days, they are especially complimentary. On some days, like Holy Thursday, entire hymns have been composed from the antiphons (in this case, the Ubi Caritas). Following the reforms of the 2nd Vatican Council, the shift to the vernacular language presented some challenges: while the translation of texts was essential to the publishing of liturgical books, new musical melodies for all of the proper chants were not written at the time, and there was also some confusion as to the hierarchy, which saw hymns and folk songs replacing the propers in many areas. With the Roman Missal 3rd edition, all things have been clarified and the propers have found their way back home. Several notable composers have written beautiful settings of the propers in English, many in the last decade. Ancient practice, but brand new music!

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the
Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity.
Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and
side to side. We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass. NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see page 4 Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall. For all parishioners: Congregating before and after Mass is prohibited, as per the bishop. There will be no children’s liturgy of the word dismissal. Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday).
We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. At weekday Masses, no one is to arrive prior to 8:30 AM. All Masses will be in the Chapel in the Parish Hall. Exposition remains suspended for now. Private adoration of the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle is welcomed and encouraged at any time.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Whenever we think of God’s “call” we usually think of it in terms of conversion, baptism, religious life, priesthood, diaconate. These are surely big religious moments. This gospel, however, invites us to hear God’s call in the everyday fidelity of discipleship. Marriage fidelity is hearing and answering God’s call. Obeying parents, getting the best grades in school one can with the talent one has been given, growing in good habits and Christian virtue is hearing and answering God’s call. Responding to the needs of others is hearing and answering God’s call. Living the gospel is hearing and answering God’s call. In these and countless other ways, each time we die to self for the sake of another we are answering God’s call to discipleship. In all of this our focus is on God and others, not ourselves. Fall is now upon us. The warm days and cool evenings; the harvesting of crops; the burst of color as the leaves begin to drop; shorter days and longer evenings set a tone of preparation for the stillness of winter. Fall begins a period of preparing our homes on the outside by tending to the trees and gardens and on the inside by readying for the upcoming feasts and holidays. There is the same preparation needed here on the campus of our parish. Please note that the Fall/Winter Mass Schedule begins in a few weeks. The Saturday Evening Anticipated Mass for Sunday will be at 4:00 pm beginning the Saturday of the first Sunday of
October. It will continue through and including Palm Sunday of Our Lord’s Passion. I encourage you to make the adjustments in your schedule. We will continue the custom of blessing animals/pets in honor of the memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi. The date is a Sunday and so the Mass texts follow the Sunday schedule. However, we will offer the blessing at 9:00 am on the front plaza of the Church Building. It has been scheduled at this time since there are baptisms following both the 10:00 am and 12:00 noon Masses in the chapel. Thank you for keeping this custom and reverencing the place of all God’s Creation. We will continue with RE Orientations this weekend. I encourage all to arrive a few minutes earlier to find an appropriate place to sit observing social distancing. We do have additional seating/chairs in the narthex should they be needed to accommodate those worshiping with us. Thank you for all that you are doing during this pandemic. Your great care in wearing the masks, sanitizing your hands, helping us to wipe down the pews is greatly appreciated. These things allow us to continue to provide for you our parishioners. The 2021 Mass Intention Book will open on Sunday, October 11 for date specific Mass Intentions within the 2021 year.
This year requests can be made via paper or online. Requests will be time stamped when received to provide order of entry into the new book. Parish Office Dates and Times for receiving of requests: Sunday, October 11, 2020 from 9 - 12 noon Monday, October 12, 2020 from 10 am - 2 pm Tuesday, October 13, 2020 from 2 pm – 7 pm Please complete the form on the reverse side and return to the Parish Office. (please write legibly and provide pronunciation where necessary). Additional forms are available in the parish office or on the website. Please be sure to have several options for your desired dates so we can accommodate you properly. Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum are not available for intentions. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark. Stipend can be paid by cash, check, or credit card. Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled and you will be asked to choose another date. After initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multi-intention form, on line, or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a first-come first served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so.

Now that the church office is open please feel free to pick up your banner kit if you haven't already done so. You and your child can decorate the banner and bring it in the day of their Communion to display in church. Don't forget to take it home with you as a keep sake at the conclusion of Mass. Tuesday on Campus Classes Grade 1 & 2 Tuesdays early session from 4:30‐5:40 pm or the late session from 5:50 ‐7 pm. The first class will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. All protocols of social distancing will be followed, temperatures will be taken upon arrival and masks will be worn. Arrival Park your car in a designated space and escort your child/ren into the Spiritual Center building. Please walk them in or have a designated adult walk your child through the doors and temperatures will be taken immediately. If your child’s temperature is above 100.4, we will wait five minutes and take it a second time. If it is the same or higher, your child will not be permitted to take class. If their temperature is below 100.4, please then proceed to your child’s classroom doorway to drop them off. Dismissal When picking up your child/ren, park in the church parking lot and come in to pick up your child/ren promptly. Using social distancing, please proceed to your child’s classroom to pick them up in the doorway. One child will be let out at a time. If someone other than the parent/guardian is picking up your child/ren, permission must be given in writing on the permission slips provided. Children will be released to persons over 18 only with the proper ID.

Please, wear a mask and maintain social distance from friends when sitting in church. Orientation will count as the first class. Student attendance is mandatory

Fall 2020 The New Day - Bereavement Support Group held by - Ministry of Consolation Invites You…to participate in a nine week program for those who are grieving the death of loved ones and want to work through the tasks of grief in a structured way using the New Day Journal, A Journey from Grief to Healing. The sessions include readings, reflection, sharing and journaling. The program will meet at 1 pm in Spiritual Center. Many of us keep score—knowing whose turn it is to take care of the chores in our homes, or perhaps feel hurt because we are doing more than our fair share. Saint Matthew’s Gospel today reflects on the generosity of God through the parable of the landowner, who paid the same for a full day or a single hour of work. This carries an especially important message for married couples. The success of your marriage, indeed the potential for an extraordinary marriage does not rely on a fifty percent partnership nor an equal amount of give and take. Instead, it relies on a one hundred percent commitment to each other. To truly and lovingly give a hundred percent each day requires that we stop keeping score, and fully commit to give our all to the spouse and family who we love so deeply. Rev. James Grogan

Catholic Charities News You’re invited to the Catholic Charities inaugural Guardian Angel Benefit of Hope virtual event on Wednesday September 30, 2020 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. This fun and entertaining virtual fund raiser, hosted by comedian Joe Piscopo, will feature entertainment, a silent auction, basket raffles, giveaways and a Super 50/50 raffle. Catholic Charities Diocese of Trenton, inspired by our Catholic faith, provides trauma – focused specialized counseling, addiction treatment, domestic violence services and help meeting basic needs for over 100,000 people each year, regardless of their religion. The celebration is an opportunity to hear stories of the transforming impact Catholic Charities makes on our community. Spiritual Direction Sr. Pat Schladebeck, LPC and Trained spiritual director is offering spiritual direction on Zoom or FaceTime. She will also offer counseling on Tuesdays and Thursdays, again through zoom or FaceTime. The offering will be $60 for both but she will also offer reduced Rates for those who can’t afford it.
