SAINT OF THE WEEK -John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor, c. 347-407 Born the son of an imperial military officer, John studied rhetoric and theology under the best Roman scholars before converting to Christianity in 369. John preferred the simple life of a monk, and in 374, he became a hermit under the guidance of Saint Basil. The austere life undermined his health, however, and he was forced to return home. John became a deacon in 381 and was ordained in 386 by the bishop of Antioch, whom he served for the next twelve years. It was during this time that his reputation for preaching began to spread. John became noted for the eloquence of his sermons which earned him the surname, Chrysostom, meaning “golden mouth.” In his sermons, John called for justice and charity, enjoining the rich to share their wealth with the poor. In 397, John became the object of an imperial ruse to make him the Archbishop of Constantinople, then the greatest city in the Roman empire..READ MORE HERE

WORSHIP & MUSIC The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated on September 14, honors the cross as the instrument of salvation and as a profound symbol of Christ’s victory over sin and death. The origins of the feast date to the fourth century, following the discovery of the True Cross by St. Helena and the subsequent dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. From its earliest observance, the feast has called the Christian faithful to contemplate both the historical events associated with the cross and its enduring spiritual significance within the mystery of Christian faith. The celebration emphasizes the profound paradox of the cross: once regarded as an instrument of shame and execution, it became the very means through which Christ accomplished the redemption of the world and, consequently, became a sign of salvation. On this day, the faithful are invited to reflect upon Christ’s sacrificial love and the triumph that flows from it. The feast is not simply a commemoration of the physical wood of the cross or a recollection of the Passion, both of which receive particular liturgical emphasis on Good Friday. Rather, the Exaltation of the Cross directs our attention to the mystery of God’s saving plan, fully revealed through Christ’s death and resurrection and manifested through the cross. The feast likewise serves as a reminder that Christian discipleship necessarily entails taking up the cross in the circumstances of daily life, always sustained by the hope of the resurrection. In this way, the celebration unites historical remembrance with a continuing call to embody the transforming power of the cross in the present day. It also marks a significant turning point within the liturgical year. As the weeks ahead progress, the Sunday readings will increasingly turn toward eschatological themes, while the Church moves steadily toward the close of the liturgical year. Indeed, we are now only slightly less than three months from the beginning of Advent and the opening of a new liturgical year.

Quo vadis... My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The second reading for this Sunday speaks in its own way of the paschal mystery and also of why we forgive one another. “None of us lives for oneself ” because we “live for the Lord.” Our relationship to each other is described in terms of our relationship to God. Christ’s dying and rising models for us our own dying and rising. Forgiving is dying to damaged relationships so that we might all belong to the Lord. Forgiving means God has hold of us and enables us to act in a God-like manner. This coming week is the annual Convocation of Priests of the Diocese of Trenton. It will be a great opportunity for us to be together and consider our priestly life and how we can grow as priests and serve the People of God in our Diocese of Trenton. I am appreciative to our parish staff and the scores of volunteers who keep the day to day operation of our parish moving forward. It is so awesome to see those who have made the commitment to assist us in the parish office as receptionists and taking on some of the regular responsibilities for managing our parish records. The death of Reverend Msgr. Michael J. Walsh is cause for us to thank God for this good and faithfilled priest. His death is sad. His life inspired many to consider a life lived in Christ. Our parish benefitted from his years of pastoring souls. I enjoyed his sage counsel and a friendship spanning more than 30 years. These past few months have offered me time to prepare for his death. I was given the blessing of seeing him and sharing some reflections. We waited for his sister Jo to arrive from Ireland before celebrating the Sacrament of the Sick with the prayers for the dying.
Now we can cherish his memory and pray for the repose of his soul. The Rites of Christian Burial are posted in this e-bulletin. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bishop is having this mass livestream so that the faithful may participate in the mass. Please consider watching the live stream. The church in Pennington is on the smaller side and parking can be challenging. Congratulations to the Martha Mary Guild on another very successful clothing drive. The energy and enthusiasm radiated throughout these hallowed buildings as shoppers were warmly greeted and those of very limited means were treated with tremendous dignity and respect. Thanks to those additional volunteers who helped this year. Well done. Start setting aside items for next year! As we begin a new catechetical year let us remember in our prayer regularly those from our parish who are learning about their faith, preparing for a sacrament or charged with teaching the doctrine of the Catholic Church. This is a very important ministry that is vital to the mission of our Catholic Church. The formation and education of our children is the responsibility of the entire parish…we support parents in this essential role. May we continue to generously provide for our children and young people. The OCIA team is interviewing adults who are interested in learning more about our Catholic Church. Please reach out to Rose Farrow if you or someone you know is interested in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist as an adult. Have a great week.
