Why should we sing at Mass? A very important question that has fortunately simple answers. We should sing at Mass because the Universal Church expects us to do so. One of the driving reasons behind the reforms of the Second Vatican Council was for “Full and active participation in the Mass”. What does this mean? This means attentive listening to the word of God during the liturgy of the word. This means that when we say “Thanks Be To God”, we truly mean it. This means that when we respond to the Word of the Lord in the psalm, we sing its antiphon (refrain) with our whole voice and heart. We watch, listen, and respond in song to the priest during the prayers of the Communion Rite. The Mass is not a spectator sport. We MUST participate. The singing of the Ordinary, (the parts of the Mass that do not change weekly: the Gloria, the Eucharistic Acclamations, etc) is of utmost importance and these parts are to always be sung at every Mass. The singing of the Propers of the Mass (the parts that change: the psalms, the communion antiphon, etc) is a tradition as old as the organized Church itself, and it is one that we carry on today. The singing of the hymns (a tradition borrowed from our Protestant brethren, who borrowed it from the Catholic tradition of singing hymns at the Liturgy of the Hours), although optional, is still important, as the hymns that are chosen for a particular day are meant to re-affirm the teachings of the readings from the day, or the nature of the liturgical season. Don’t know the hymn or song? Listen to the first verse or two and join in later. Think the instruments might be too loud? Not if the entire congregation joins in the singing. Can’t carry a tune in a suitcase? Sing anyway, for the Lord will hear and be glad. CAN carry a tune in a suitcase? Join the choir!

The Thursday Men’s Morning Office
has been meeting since 1981 when it was formed by now Pastor Emeritus William J. Bausch. As of September 2021, we have about 20 men meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am in the Chapel for prayer. We usually conclude our prayer service by 7:30 am, and then enjoy some coffee, donuts & camaraderie for 15-20 minutes before all are on their way. With an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+, we welcome any men in the Parish or cohort to come join us any Thursday morning for prayer & fellowship!

Saint of the Week: Saint Vincent de Paul Priest 1550-1660 Patron Saint of Charitable Societies In his lifetime, Vincent de Paul established hospitals, orphanages, and seminaries; ransomed slaves in northern Africa; sent his priests abroad to preach missions; and organized far-flung relief among victims of war. It is remarkable that one man, without the advantages of birth and fortune so necessary for success in those times, could achieve so much. Vincent's message today: Even though he was ordained a priest at an early age, it took an awakening event for Vincent to recognize what God was calling him to do. The same is true for many of us, no matter what age we are. God may be asking us to do something as simple as praying for our neighbor. On the other hand, God may be asking us to do much more.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Through our baptismal anointing we truly are prophets (see first reading); all of us are commissioned to speak and do deeds in the Lord’s name. Thus baptism is more than initiation into a group—it is the transformation of ourselves into disciples of Christ who follow the Teacher by faithful service “in [his] name.” As a follower of Christ this means doing something so great as volunteering for one of the liturgical ministries or so simple a task as taking the garbage out without being asked. The month of September is quickly coming to a close. The Season of Fall is upon us. The days continue to shorten. The darkness is longer and the daylight is shorter. The foliage begins to change color. The warm air yields to a crisp chill. The crops are harvested and the bounty distributed. When coming to and from the parish campus remember the many events that happen along route 34 during the months of fall. Traffic can be surprisingly dense during these days. Perhaps you might want to make allowance for delays? The Saturday Evening Mass will be celebrated at 4:00pm beginning 2 October 2021 and continue through the Saturday of Palm Sunday in the month of April 2022. The month of October provides us with the opportunity for us to reflect on the life and witness of Saint Francis of Assisi as well as Our Lady of the Rosary. Next weekend we observe Respect Life Sunday.
There are many ways in which we show our respect for the dignity of human life. Our sharing of clothes and other essential items, our service at soup kitchens, Chastity Awareness, and certainly our steadfast position against Abortion and the Death Penalty. While these are some of the most difficult issues of our day, let us pray for an openness to God’s will for us in our lives to be faith-filled witnesses, especially concerning the dignity of every human life from conception through natural death. During the month of October our parish celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation for our young people as they prepare to become fully initiated members of our Catholic Church. We also celebrate First Holy Communion with children of our parish. This is an exciting time for them and their families as they continue to learn of our Catholic Faith in their journey toward full initiation. Let us pray for these children and young people, their parents, sponsors and family members. I am also grateful to our catechists, their assistants, our Faith Formation and RE Staff for their dedicated service. Preparations are underway for our Halloween Halls event as well as the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Please consult the parish bulletin for details. Many thanks to all those who regularly bring nonperishable food items when coming to mass each weekend as well as those who regularly contribute to our fund for Charitable Appeals/Poor & Needy. Tickets are being sold through November 11th at the parish office. The proceeds of which will benefit New Jersey Right to Life, the state’s oldest and largest pro-life organization, dedicated to protecting all human life from conception to natural death.
