Saint “Padre” Pio became internationally famous. He was known for his piety, charity and the quality of his preaching. He famously advised, "Pray, hope and don't worry." He had other illnesses, as well, including cancer which was miraculously healed after just two treatments. Other problems, such as arthritis, which plagued him in his later years, never went away. Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968. His funeral was attended by over 100,000 people.

What are the roles of the cantor, the choir, and the congregation during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? The role of the congregation is to respond in prayer, both sung and spoken, at the appropriate times during Mass. In the order of the Mass, this means: Entrance Antiphon • Kyrie • Gloria • Affirmations following the readings • Antiphon of the Responsorial Psalm • Acclamation before the Gospel • Sequences• Creed • Preface Dialogue • Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) • Memorial Acclamation • Amen • The Lord’s Prayer • Agnus Dei • Prayer before Communion • Communion Antiphon Affirmations to the Prayer after Communion, Solemn Blessings and dismissal • In addition to above, there is also the singing of hymns or songs. While this is at first glance a daunting list, do remember that the Ordinary remains constant in terms of text, while the musical settings change seasonally. The role of the cantor during Mass is more accurately described as a psalmist. The cantor sings the verses of responsorial psalm, the verse before the Gospel, and the verses of psalms sung during the entrance or communion processions. The cantor also plays a very important role in the liturgies of the Triduum, as the rubrics indicate certain texts and chants to be specifically sung by the cantor, sometimes even indicating the preference that there be two cantors, one male, one female. Many carry the notion that the cantor leads the congregation during the singing of everything else, but this is a half-truth. At Low Masses, those without an organ, the cantor provides the visual and musical cues to the congregation and bolsters their singing. At Masses with an organ, the organist is the true leader of the congregation, and the cantor as we assists the congregation with pitch and text. Try this next time you are at Mass: As the introduction to a piece of music starts, close your eyes or do not otherwise look at the cantor, and if you have a professional organist you will know when to start singing, at what tempo, and as the music continues, you will know whether or not the verse you are on is the final one. The role of the choir is two-fold. The first is to bolster the congregational singing, but to do so in a more refined and elegant manner; singing in many voice parts instead of unison, and adding descants and countermelodies as indicated by the composer. The second is to sing the parts of the Mass or other selections not designed for congregational singing. This includes, but is not limited to, the singing of a polyphonic motet, hymn or other devotional piece before Mass, or following the Communion chant. A well-rehearsed choir can elevate mood of the worship environment and at certain times of the year it is of utmost necessity to have a robust choir!

Fall 2021 - Spring 2022 Classes will be offered both on campus in-person and in the live remote Google classroom format.

We are here and ready to share the richness of our faith with you. RCIA is a comprehensive process, in which the Church supports and encourages the spiritual journeys of those who are unbaptized and seeking to become Catholic and for those who are baptized Catholic or in another Christian denomination who wish to complete their Sacraments of Initiation (First Eucharist and Confirmation). Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. No wonder Jesus focused his time on the journey to Jerusalem on his disciples—this teaching is so hard to hear! No wonder the disciples do not understand—this teaching is so hard to accept! We are no different from the disciples. How often do we fail to come to Jesus to question him so that we can understand the cost of discipleship? We are afraid to question Jesus about discipleship when we choose the easy way which is not discipleship: when we ignore the plea of others for help; when we only spend time with people in our own inner circle; when we harbor racial, sexual, or religious prejudices; when we…? Parish Trustees provide an invaluable service to the oversight role of the pastor in serving the parish community. Each of my 3 pastorates have benefitted from the sage counsel of the parish trustees. They are nominated by the pastor and confirmed by the Bishop or Vicar General. Trustees are a part of each parishes corporate structure set forth by the ordinances and statutes of the State of New Jersey. Each Roman Catholic Parish is a 501-C(3) non-profit entity. The Diocesan Bishop serves as the President; The Vicar General serves as the Vice-President; the appointed Pastor serves as the Secretary/Treasurer; there are 2 Lay Faithful from the congregation who are appointed Trustees. The term of Parish Lay Trustees is normatively 1 year, renewable 5 times. The term might be extended for just cause. We have been well served by William
LaMorte and Irene Weller. Irene was an exofficio member of the Parish Pastoral Council and served 6 years. Bill was an exofficio member and Chair of the Parish Finance Council serving 7 years due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. I am grateful both of these stakeholder parishioners for their candid and sage counsel and their commitment to our parish community. This year I am nominating two new trustees to begin their term of service. Roger Zurro will serve as the Ex-Officio Member of the Parish Pastoral Council. Annette Raynor will serve as the Ex-Officio Member & Chair of the Parish Finance Council. Both Annette and Roger have been involved in parish life throughout their time as bona fide parishioners. They have been active and supportive during the pastorates of several pastors demonstrating a commitment to the mission of our parish. Please join me in thanking them for sharing their time and talent in this most important role of oversight. I will be taking some days off this coming week. It is brief time for some rest and recovery. Monsignor Troiano is scheduled to be away on holiday later this month and into early October. Monsignor Walsh is scheduled to make the trek to visit family in his native Ireland for a few weeks returning mid-October if all goes according to plan. Welcome back to our Principal Cantor Jill Russo who welcomed her first born child Sophia Grace earlier this month. This is truly a blessed time for Jill and her family.
