The first portion occurs after the end of the Christmas Season and the Baptism of the Lord. Ordinary Time is then interrupted by the seasons of Lent and Easter. It resumes following the Solemnity of Pentecost at the end of the Easter Season. This second “half” is much larger than the first and some communities place a division within this portion. As the title of this article suggest, this last part of Ordinary Time occurs in the Autumn months, following the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14. It is a busy time of year in both the liturgical and civic calendars. Beginning with the Exaltation of the Cross and concluding with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe only 10 or 11 weeks later, this season also includes: The Solemnity of All Saints, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, our annual Ecumenical Service with the Colts Neck Reformed Church, and the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion in our parish. The liturgical color of the vestments remains green, but a keen eye will notice a different shade, in line with the changing of the colors in the natural world around us. Toward the end of this season, there is a shift in the tone of the Sunday readings towards the end of time. This section of readings from about the 30th week onward are referred to as the “last weeks (or days) of Ordinary time” referring both to the content of the readings and the more literal nature of the season coming to an end. Here in our parish, the musical setting of the Mass changes to Tony Alonso’s Mass for Joy & Peace. This is a modern setting, incorporating mildly syncopated rhythms with a very simple harmonic structure, a verse/refrain style Gloria, and other frequenting repeated motive which foster familiarity among the assembly. The chanting of the propers for communion continues, as this is the preferred option according to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. At certain celebrations, a hymn may be equally appropriate and those will be utilized as well.

Couples from Ocean and Monmouth Counties may attend the Mass and Blessing at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine in Freehold on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 3 pm. Sacred Relics Of The Saints: Treasures Of The Church
St. Ann Parish presents a teaching and exposition of Sacred Relics on Thursday September 16 at 6:30 PM. Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with an extraordinary Vatican collection of over 150 relics, some as old as 2000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Ann, St. Joseph, St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower”), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. There will also be a portion of the Veil of Our Lady and one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate each relic. Throughout history, many healings have been worked in the presence of relics; and thousands have occurred through this ministry. Do not miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members, which you will be able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession. Afghanistan: Pope launches appeal for fasting, prayers for God's mercy VATICAN CITY • With increased violence unfolding in Afghanistan, Pope Francis appealed to all Christians to fast and intensify their prayers. "I ask everyone to continue to help the needy and to pray that dialogue and solidarity may lead to the establishment of a peaceful and fraternal coexistence and offer hope for the country's future," he said, after praying the Angelus with visitors in St. Peter's Square Aug. 29. He said he had been following the news out of Afghanistan "with great concern." "I take part in the suffering of those who are grieving for the persons who lost their lives in the suicide attacks that happened last Thursday and of those who are seeking help and protection," he said. The Pope was referring to the Aug. 26 attack when a suicide bomber detonated an explosion among the crowds of people desperate to leave the country at the gate of the Hamid Karzai International Airport. The blast killed at least 169 civilians and 13 U.S. service members, who were set to withdraw from the country by Aug. 31. Thousands of Afghans were seeking to be evacuated as well. The Islamic State claimed responsibility, saying the suicide bomber was targeting Afghan collaborators with the U.S. army.Read

Saint of the Week– Polycarp, Bishop and Martyr
A follower of St. John the Evangelist, Polycarp was one of the second generation of Church leaders known as Apostolic Fathers. As the bishop of Smyrna (modern day Izmir, Turkey), Polycarp was the acknowledged leader of the Eastern Church. He traveled to Rome to meet with Pope Anicetus for discussion of certain issues. Among these was the timing of Easter which the eastern and western Churches differed on. Neither was able to persuade the other on this point, but they concluded that each should follow their own custom. Despite this disagreement, the pope, to signify his respect, asked Polycarp to celebrate the Eucharist in his own papal

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following Jesus is not about a dramatic martyrdom like in the early Church, nor about any great, showy response. Rather it is about how we live every single day: dying and rising in our everyday simple circumstances. For example, we must die to our way of thinking (taking the easy way of self-seeking, selfgratification, self-interest) and embrace how God thinks (carrying the cross of goodness, righteousness, justice, integrity, wholeness, fullness of life). For our reflection this week: Where does following Jesus lead you? What gives you hope and consolation when faced with suffering? Are you willing to look at the dark side of yourself and do the hard work to change? This weekend is the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our country. We will remember those who died, their families and first responders at the 5:00pm Saturday Evening Mass here in our parish. Additionally, the Colts Neck Township Committee will host a civic observance Saturday, 11 September 2021 at 6:00pm at the municipal complex in town. I encourage you to join with other members of our civic community in this act of remembrance. This coming week (T-W-R) all of the active diocesan priests, religious order priests serving in our diocese, and those retired priests who are interested, will gather for our annual convocation. It is a time for us to come together with our diocesan bishop to consider some aspects of our priestly life or the life of our local church…the diocese.
Some years this gathering focuses on spirituality and ministry, other years it can be a topic that is more of a practical nature. There is time for communal prayer, the Eucharist, penance & reconciliation as well as catching up with one another and getting to know the more recently ordained priests. I thank you for your prayer for the priests of our diocese that our hearts, minds and spirits will be open to the prompting of God’s grace in our midst. Father Gene will remain here, since he is part of the Archdiocese of the USA Military Services, to celebrate daily mass and respond to any emergencies that might arise. Recently, I have been informed of the responsible stewardship of so many who have been away during the summer months and have made their stewardship offerings to cover those weeks while away. The shift to online giving has aided parishioner families to continue their support even when not physically present for Sunday Mass. We are very grateful to all of those who responsibly catch up for weekends spent at the shore, away for travel sports or other opportunities for travel. Thank you for recognizing that your giving is necessary to properly operate our parish and fulfill our obligations. Together, we continue to provide what is needed for our parish and the ministries/ services that we are able to offer. Preparations are underway to publish our Annual Stewardship Report. It is my hope that once the financials have been submitted to the Diocese of Trenton our team will focus on preparing the information for electronic publication to you our stakeholder parishioners. Take Action Now to Protect the Hyde Amendment
Never Forget: 9-11 and One Person’s Memories
The Hyde Amendment, contained in the federal government’s annual appropriations legislation, prohibits federal funding of domestic abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. It is a bipartisan provision that has been part of federal appropriations for 45 years (since 1976) and enjoys overwhelming public support. Now some members in Congress want to take away these laws that both Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly half a century. If successful billions of taxpayer dollars could be used to pay for abortions.
It was a beautiful Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C., on September 11, 20 years ago. I was scheduled to concelebrate Mass later that day so I had a bit more personal time that morning to read the paper, have another cup of coffee and watch the end of New York’s “Today” show before heading downstairs to my office to begin work.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is asking all Catholics and people of good will to sign a petition to let Congress know they support the Hyde Amendment and do not want tax dollars paying for abortions.

It looked beautiful on TV in New York, too, that September 11, 2001, until the broadcast was interrupted shortly after 9 a.m. with live scenes of smoke billowing from the North Tower of the World Trade Center. A plane had apparently crashed into the building. No one seemed sure what had happened until, moments later, a second plane hit the South Tower. It all seemed surreal, too much of a coincidence to be accidental.
