Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop, 1807-1870 Born in the north of Spain, this saint started out working in cloth weaving, his father’s trade. He used his spare time to learn Latin and printing. When he was twenty-two, Anthony entered the seminary where he was ordained six years later. For ten years, he devoted himself to giving missions and retreats in his native Catalonia. These proved so popular that he inspired other priests to join him to help carry on this. work. In 1849, with these other priests, he formed the congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary which became ROTATING PARISH CTA / MINI ARTICLE known as the Claretians. As his work in Spain was coming to fruition, Father Anthony was sent by the pope to Cuba where he was to be the Archbishop of Santiago, the largest archdiocese in Cuba READ MORE HERE

OCTOBER is ROSARY MONTH The earliest known precursors to the Rosary were knotted prayer ropes, used by early Christians as a way of keeping count while repeating prayers. The practice of using beads or cords to count prayers, however, has roots that predate Christianity and can be found in various religious traditions. The concept of the Rosary as we know it today is traditionally associated with Saint Dominic in the 13th century, through an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While historians debate the details of this tradition, there is no question that devotion to Mary and the repeated praying of the Hail Mary became increasingly popular during the Middle Ages. The practice of praying the Rosary by the laity also developed as a kind of parallel to the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours by clergy and religious, providing ordinary Christians with a structured form of daily prayer. The structure of the prayers developed into its modern form over the next three centuries. This included the placement and use of the introductory prayers, the Lord’s Prayer, Apostles’ Creed, Hail Mary, Salve Regina, Doxology, and other prayers. Although there were variations in the exact form and arrangement, the basic structure eventually became remarkably consistent and remained largely unchanged until the 20th century. Another important development during this period was the practice of reciting the Rosary while meditating on specific events in the life of Christ and His Mother. The Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries became firmly established as the traditional groups of mysteries, with five mysteries in each category, one for each decade of the Rosary. Saints and spiritual writers, including St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, a French priest of the 17th and early 18th centuries, greatly encouraged this meditative approach and helped establish the Rosary as not simply a repetition of prayers, but a means of contemplating the life of Christ through the eyes of Mary. In the early to mid-20th century, it became increasingly common, particularly in group devotional prayer, to add one of the prayers associated with the apparitions at Fatima following each decade, along with the Doxology. This became especially popular after the reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the three shepherd children at Fatima in 1917. The Rosary continued to be strongly promoted by the popes as a powerful prayer for peace, conversion, and devotion to Christ through Mary. In 2002, Pope Saint John Paul II added another group of mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries, sometimes called the Mysteries of Light. These five mysteries focus on significant moments in Christ’s public ministry, including His Baptism in the Jordan, the Wedding at Cana, the proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist. There are several ways to pray the Rosary, with different traditions prescribing particular times of year, times of day, numbers of decades, or mysteries upon which to meditate. The simplest form is the prayer of a single decade, which can be conveniently prayed using a rosary ring or bracelet and is sometimes suggested for children who are first learning the Rosary. In this way, a person might pray one decade each day and complete all five decades of a full Rosary over the course of a week. At the other end of the spectrum, some devotional practices include praying four complete Rosaries in succession, incorporating all four sets of mysteries. This is more commonly associated with particularly significant devotional occasions, such as Divine Mercy Sunday, the Second Sunday of Easter; the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13; the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7; and other Marian feasts and days of special devotion. Whatever form it takes, the Rosary remains a deeply cherished Catholic prayer, inviting the faithful to meditate upon the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ with Mary as their companion and guide.

Mass of Remembrance SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2026 • 10:00 AM MASS Preceding the 10am Mass our Parish will remember in a special way those who had a Funeral Mass at Saint Mary during the past year as well as any relatives or friends who recommend. St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians addresses many of the same topics in the news headlines today: scandals, promiscuity, debates and controversies, and issues related to prosperity versus poverty. Clearly, the struggles faced by the early Christians are in many ways similar to our own. First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community explores the key elements of the gospel message that Paul introduced to a new and growing Church. Presenter Tim Gray examines Paul's advice for living an authentic Christian life in a pagan culture, as well as his teachings about the nature of grace, the Church as the body of Christ, and the most powerful gift of all—the Eucharist.
