Saints Simon and Jude: Apostles of Hope and Perseverance Saints Simon and Jude, whose feast day is celebrated on October 28, were among the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus Christ to spread the Gospel to the world. Though little is recorded about their lives in the New Testament, both men played important roles in the early Church. Simon, often called “the Zealot,” is believed to have been part of a Jewish group passionate for God’s law and the liberation of Israel, while Jude—also known as Thaddeus— is remembered for his steadfast faith and for authoring one of the New Testament letters urging Christians to remain firm in the truth. Tradition holds that after Pentecost, Simon and Jude traveled as missionaries, preaching the message of Christ in places such as Persia, Mesopotamia, and possibly Syria. Despite facing persecution and hardship, they remained faithful to their mission of bringing light to those who had not yet heard the Gospel. Their unwavering dedication to Christ’s call eventually led to their martyrdom, which, according to ancient accounts, occurred on the same day while they were evangelizing together. Over the centuries, devotion to Saints Simon and Jude has grown, with Saint Jude especially venerated as the patron saint of hopeless and desperate causes. Their lives serve as a reminder that perseverance in faith, even amid suffering and uncertainty, bears great spiritual fruit. Together, Saints Simon and Jude stand as enduring examples of courage, unity, and trust in God’s providence.

SAINT OF THE WEEK Simon, Apostle and Martyr, First Century Perhaps the least known of the Apostles, Simon is only mentioned in the lists contained in the Gospels. Matthew, Mark and Luke all refer to this saint as “Simon the Zealot.” This has caused some scholars to link him with the Zealot faction, a radical first-century revolutionary ROTATING PARISH CTA / MINI ARTICLE organization which sought to eliminate Roman rule by terrorism. Quo vadis...
My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Most of us don’t have difficulty loving those we know and care about. The first reading directs our love even toward the neighbor we don’t know. In our present society this is perhaps not only challenging but sometimes it is also very risky. In a crime-laden society such as ours we tend not to trust the stranger—the one we meet on the street or the one who might come to our door. On the one hand, we must be careful and protect ourselves and our loved ones. On the other hand, we must be genuinely sensitive to others’ needs. If someone comes to our door and needs to use the phone, we can offer to make the call for them; if we see something happening that is wrong, we can take responsibility and call the police or other agency; we can do something so simple as hold a store door open for someone who is package-laden. Yes, actions speak louder than words!
Congratulations to our First Communicants and their families. All three masses were prayerful and the children looked great. Last weekend we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. I am grateful to our staff for their great care in preparing these families. Our parishioners have been great in assisting us with all of the details for these sacramental celebrations. This weekend we will host the Halloween Halls beginning at the Saturday 4:00pm mass and continuing throughout the buildings on our campus. Sunday we will welcome family members of those who have experienced the death of a loved one in the past year…the Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated on Sunday at 10:00 am mass.
Coffee and donuts will be offered in the narthex of the church following the mass. Take some time to get to know others in our parish community and to welcome/support those who have buried a loved one this past year. The following weekend is the Solemnity of All Saints 1 November, this year observed Saturday and Sunday. The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, 2 November, also known as All Souls Day, will be celebrated at 9:00am in the Chapel. The intentions you submit to us will be placed at the tabernacle in the chapel and church throughout the month of November. Our Annual Stewardship Report for the Calendar Year 2025 & the Fiscal Year 1 July 2025 – 30 June 2026 will be sent electronically sent to all of our registered parishioners via the email handle they have provided to us. It will also be available on our website. While it can seem a bit overwhelming, I encourage you to read through it to learn more about our parish. Surely, oversight of finances is important; however, how the financial resources are used to further the mission of the church is equally important. Thank you for your continued support of our parish.
As the leaves change color, we are reminded that our liturgical year is quickly coming to a close. The new liturgical year begins with the Season of Advent…a time of preparation and hope. Take some time to enjoy the fall weather. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
