Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Times World Mission Sunday, a day when we, together with all the Catholics around the globe, unite in prayer and generosity for the Church’s missionary work. This centennial year is especially meaningful as we celebrate the recent beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Luke, Evangelist, First Century
Luke is the author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles. He was the only Gentile Christian among the four Evangelists and his Gospel, written in Greek, was unquestionably written for Gentile Christians.Tradition has him as a Greek-born, from Antioch. Saint Paul called Luke "our beloved physician" (Col ROTATING 4:14) and Luke was known to have PARISH CTA / MINI ARTICLE traveled with Paul on his second and third missionary expeditions in Greece and Rome. He also accompanied Paul on the dangerous journey to Rome, where Paul wrote, "only Luke is with me" (2 Tim 4:11). READ MORE HERE

WORSHIP & MUSIC Andrew J. Macirowski - Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@StMarysColtsNeck.org • Music@StMarysColtsNeck.org
October 19th is the memorial of Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues and companions. Brébeuf and Jogues were French Jesuit missionary priests who came to the newly discovered Canadian country in the early 1600s, with the intent to convert the native population of Huron, Algonquin, and Iroquois to Catholicism. While they found early success, they faced constant threats from local tribes who wanted nothing to do with them and found them to be intruders, and from Protestant Dutch and English settlers. Saint Isaac Jogues is noted for having been captured and tortured for over a year, his hands becoming mutilated. He managed to travel to the island of Manhattan, holding the distinction of being the first priest to visit the island, and made his was back to France where he was granted permission to continue celebrating Mass, despite his newfound handicap. He later returned to the New World where he was killed by anti-French Mohawk tribe members. Perhaps coincidentally, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American to be canonized, was born in the village where Jogues died. Saint John de Brébeuf is noted for having composed the lyrics to Canada’s oldest Christmas Carol, The Huron Carol, sometimes known by its first line, “Twas in the moon of Wintertime”. Written to a French melody in the Native Huron language, it tells the story of the humble birth of Jesus, surrounded by the animals, but using imagery known to the Huron people, relating their “Great Spirit” to the spirit of God, Jesus wrapped in rabbit skin, in a lodge of bark, the “chiefs from afar” offering him fox and beaver pelt, etc. He was also captured and tortured by natives, who “baptized” him with boiling water and with fire; it was recounted that he remained silent through his torture, knowing the risks he took when coming to the New World, and content in the souls he had saved through conversion.

Mental Health Sunday Pope Leo XIV has asked the whole Church to pray this October for mental health ministry, that it may take root in every community and help end the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with mental illness. Depression, anxiety, loneliness, grief, and addiction touch nearly every family, often quietly. No one carries these burdens beyond the reach of God's healing love, and no one should carry them alone. Please join Catholics across the United States in praying the U.S. Bishops' Novena for Mental Health, October 10 to 18, beginning on World Mental Health Day and ending on the feast of St. Luke, the physician evangelist: https://www.usccb.org/mentalhealth-novena. If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., reflected on encounters he has had in his priestly ministry with individuals and families impacted by mental health struggles. “I have listened to stories of depression, anxiety, addiction, and a wide range of mental health challenges,” Bishop O’Connell wrote in a message last September. “These burdens are often carried silently hidden behind smiles, masked by busy lives, and sometimes misunderstood, even by those closest to us.” The Bishop continued, “These are profoundly human experiences – complex, painful, and real. But they are never beyond the reach of God’s healing love. In fact, such moments call us to become vessels of that love for one another.” New Jersey

St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians addresses many of the same topics in the news headlines today: scandals, promiscuity, debates and controversies, and issues related to prosperity versus poverty. Clearly, the struggles faced by the early Christians are in many ways similar to our own.
Be the Winner!
First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community explores the key elements of the gospel message that Paul introduced to a new and growing Church. Presenter Tim Gray examines Paul's advice for living an authentic Christian life in a pagan culture, as well as his teachings about the nature of grace, the Church as the body of Christ, and the most powerful gift of all—the Eucharist.

Quo vadis...
My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Income taxes are automatically deducted from salaries; we are barely conscious of it. Our service of God, however, is not exacted from us but is freely and consciously given. Our “obligation” to God is really the self-giving that freely and consciously flows from our sense of God’s prior goodness to us. One aspect, then, of growing in our self-offering is growing in our awareness of God’s goodness to us. We might begin by taking a few moments each morning, afternoon, and evening to stop whatever we are doing and ask ourselves how we are experiencing God’s blessings. Eventually this practice can grow into a pervading awareness of God’s presence and goodness to us. During this month of October we continue our journey as disciples of the Lord accompanied by Our Lady of the Rosary. Let us continue to recover this beautiful prayer tradition to help us re-focus ourselves and to give thanks and praise to God. Let us also pray for an increased awareness of and respect for human life from conception through natural death. This is one of the great moral challenges of our time as church. It requires us to set aside bias and to join together to promote laws and policies that support the very dignity of the human person. I am encouraged by many of our young people. They have great interest in this part of the Christian Moral Life. I hope that their energy continues to transform our society. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered in our parish Friday, 16 October at 4:00pm. Let us pray these confirmati as the continue their journey of faith. I pray that they will become more involved in the life of our Holy Catholic Church.
We welcome another group of candidates for First Holy Communion this weekend. We welcome their families and friends here to celebrate this milestone with them. Last weekend several visitors offered some very positive comments to me about our parish campus, the church and especially the celebration of the mass. This is a credit to all of you who support the mission and ministries of our parish. Preparations are underway for our annual Halloween Halls; the Thanksgiving Food Drive; the Advent Tree of Love. These community building activities help link parishioners together as we provide for the needs of others. Please consult the bulletin for details on how you might become involved. It is that time of year when we are preparing for one of our greatest privileges as Americans…that is the privilege to cast our vote. Election day is a few weeks away. Take the time to learn about the issues and the candidates. Should you be away, apply for an absentee ballot to add your vote to the tally or there are places where you can vote early. Don’t allow yourself to become indifferent about voting. Talk to your children about what it means to have the freedom to vote. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday.Peace. Father Jeff
