The Blessing of Animals commonly occurs on or near October 4th, the Memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Francis, one of the more popular saints, is known for his love and care for the environment and all of creation, and peace among all peoples. He was also the first to erect a Nativity Scene for Christmas, using live animals and a straw-filled feeding trough for the infant Jesus, so that worshippers would get a better sense of the humble circumstances through which Christ entered our world. This love of creation and his use of animals and their importance in our lives has led to the custom of blessing animals. The Catholic Church has a specific ritual for the blessing of animals, calling to mind the interdependent nature of animals and humans, that “animals share in the fortunes of human existence and have a part in human life� [Book of Blessings]. At public gatherings for the ritual, it is also common to pray for peace and for the care of creation.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. When we think of people of great faith, we often mention people like Ghandi or Mother Teresa. These were great religious leaders who obviously had great faith and accomplished great things. We make a mistake, however, if we identify faith only with great things. Jesus reminds us in this gospel that our everyday actions, performed in loving service, are expressions of our faith. The faith-filled person puts in an honest day’s work. That person is gracious to those with whom he or she comes in contact. That person is ready to reach out and help another, even beyond one’s own work load. The faithfilled person sees Jesus in the other and responds to the situation with Jesus’ love and care. Faith is faithfulness in action. During the Month of October the Church celebrates the life and ministry of “il poverello” the poor one of Assisi, Saint Francis. We offered the opportunity for families to bring their pets to our Peace Shrine and have them blessed. October is also a time when the Universal Church honors the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary. This month is also a time when the Church reflects on the sanctity of every human life from the womb to the tomb. We set our eyes on the image of the Virgin at Tepeyac, Our Lady of Guadalupe who is the patroness of America, North, Central and South. It is one of the very few images that we have of Mary pregnant with child.
This coming Friday our parish will host the documentary film “UNPLANNED”. The film has with it an “R” rating. I think it is an important opportunity to enter into the dialogue of life regardless of your personal position. Each one of us can benefit from listening to and participating in healthy, respectful dialogue. There will be multiple showings in our parish theater. It is my hope that some of our parents who have teenage children will make the time to come and view this film together. There is a lot of information out there and much of that information can be misinformed. There is a graphic component to this film; however, I am not so sure that it is any more violent than some of the video games on the market these days. In any case, the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring this event and we are hosting it for them. Thank you for your attention and questions last weekend as we invited greater participation in the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. These are tough times for our Roman Catholic Church and it is important that we remain in solidarity with His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton to insure the great work of our local church. We need everyone to participate in whatever way your means allow. It is a sacrifice that each of us undertakes for the good of the mission of our Catholic Church. Confirmation is Friday, October 18, 4:00 pm (Arrival time is EARLIER) Plan to arrive no later than 2:45 pm to Madonna Hall. Candidates, sponsors, and parents gather in Madonna Hall in order to check in, take group pictures, and line up in order to be in the church prior to 3:45 pm. All relatives and friends should plan on being seated in the church prior to 3:45 pm. During the Rite of Confirmation the celabrant and the priests who are administering the sacrament lay their hands upon those who are to be confirmed. It is here that the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit are received ...“ the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.”
First four of the Seven Gifts Wisdom is our ability to value spiritual things over worldly ones. It enables us to desire the things of God and correctly order the things in our life. This gift helps us view the world through God’s perspective and the light of our faith. It instills a desire to contemplate the things of God. Understanding helps us grasp the truths of the faith more easily and profoundly. Our human intellect cannot grasp all of God’s mysteries, but through the gift of understanding we can be led to truth, even when we do not fully comprehend. This gift strengthens our insight through prayer, Counsel/ Right Judgment acknowledges the difference between right and wrong and bestows proper judgment. A person with right judgment avoids sin and leads a life for Christ. Counsel inspires us to speak up and encourage others to do the correct thing. It bestows upon us prudence, allowing us to act promptly and rightly in the face of difficult situations. Fortitude/Courage sustains our decision to follow the will of God in any situation. It allows us to stand up and defend our faith, even when threatened by bodily injury or death. This gift allows us to be steadfast in our decisions to do well and to endure evil even when we do not want to.
Spiritual Direction Beginning on October, Spiritual Direction will be offered by Sr. Pat Schladebeck, MSC who is a certified spiritual director. Information is available in the office explaining spiritual direction. The cost is $60 per session, but no one is turned away if you cannot afford it. Usually the directee and director meet once a month. If you are interested please give your name and contact information to the Parish Office. Sr. Pat will return the calls promptly.

The Martha Mary Guild’s October Meeting The Martha Mary Guild’s October meeting is traditionally a “triple treat”. New members are inducted with a special ceremony, led by our Pastor, Rev. Jeffrey Lee, or Deacon John. Then there will be a delicious PotLuck Luncheon, to welcome the new members. After the feast is consumed, there is a Fashion Show, with members modeling their “prized possessions” from the September Clothing Sale. MASS OF REMEMBRANCE will be October 27 On Sunday, October 27, 2019, at the 10:00 am Mass, our Parish will remember in a special way those who had a funeral Mass at Saint Mary during the past year as well any relative you may wish to remember. This Mass is an opportunity for us to assist those who grieve the death of a loved one. This year’s meeting will be on Wednesday, Oct. 9, with the rosary in the Spiritual Center Chapel at 11:00 a.m. (Please note the time change.) The Induction Ceremony will take place at 11:30 in Madonna Hall, due to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel. Our Pot- Luck Luncheon will follow. Kindly bring your “culinary creations” to the Madonna Hall kitchen before the rosary.
