Sanctuary Lamps Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Christ Chapel in memory of a loved one who has died or to honor a living person. This week, a brief reminder on what we should be singing The role of the congregation is to respond in prayer, both sung and spoken, at the appropriate times during Mass. In the order of the Mass, this means: Entrance Antiphon • Kyrie • Gloria • Affirmations following the readings • Antiphon of the Responsorial Psalm • Acclamation before the Gospel • Sequences• Creed • Preface Dialogue • Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) • Memorial Acclamation • Amen • The Lord’s Prayer • Agnus Dei • Prayer before Communion • Communion Antiphon Affirmations to the Prayer after Communion, Solemn Blessings and dismissal • In addition to above, there is also the singing of hymns or songs. Following the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, in which the language of the Mass was changed to the vernacular, great importance was placed on participation of the people. Therefore, it is imperative that the congregation SING those parts of the Mass that should be sung, especially those that you are familiar with. If you are unfamiliar with a piece of music at Mass, listen to the cantor or choir sing it through a few times, and then join in. This is easiest to do during the singing of strophic hymns, which, although optional in the Roman Catholic Church, lead to a greater sense of communal prayer and worship. And remember, the music ministers at Mass are ministers, performing a function and duty, not performing for an audience - applause is never appropriate. The organist, cantor, and choir are there to lead and support the congregational singing, and to foster a prayerful atmosphere during those times when the congregation is not expected to sing. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Much of our doing for others is simply part of our everyday circumstances, for example, parents taking care of their children or a worker cooperating with others on a team job. Being the slave of all isn’t always something extra or big; most of the time it is simply doing our everyday tasks and keeping in mind that others are the body of Christ. If we can do these everyday tasks with loving care, then if something big comes along we won’t deny Jesus like the apostles but will say “we can.” Congratulations to all of our confirmati those having been confirmed Friday last. We also congratulate their parents, sponsors and family members. This is a true milestone for them. We know that faith is passed on in the family. Parish clergy, catechists and formation coordinators assist parents in this essential role. It is my hope that the Eucharist will continue to nurture these families, especially the confirmati, as they continue their journey of faith. Christian Discipleship is about Mission, growing in Faith and embracing the call to conversion. Special thanks to Dr. Jim Bridges and all those who assist him, as well as Andrew Macirowski and all who
assist him. Our increased offertory program continues to make progress. I am grateful to our lay witnesses Annette Reynor and John Reinhardt for sharing their insights as members of our parish community. The responses continue to be returned. This is a critical step in funding the essential operation of our parish amidst rising fixed costs. Thank you for your prayerful responses in support of our parish. Next weekend we will host the annual Halloween Halls with a new component of Saints and Superheroes. Preparations are underway for All Souls Day, the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Fall Clean Up of our 25 Acres, First Penance & Reconciliation/Advent Penance & Reconciliation Service, Light Up a Memory Tree Lighting, the Annual Pancake Breakfast and much more. Check out the parish bulletin, e-blasts and monthly enewsletter for activities and opportunities to get involved. These are great ways to give back while meeting other parishioners. This year we will have a short program on Saint & Superheroes given by Dr. Jim Bridges. The timeline of events is as follows: Children and their parents are encouraged to come to 4 pm Mass in their costumes Children and Families will meet in the gathering space & process parade style to Madonna Hall for a short activity titled Saints and Superheroes. This should last about 30 minutes. At the conclusion of Saints and Superheroes children will be able to begin trick or treating

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE will be NOVEMBER 4 On Sunday, November 4, 2018, at the 10:00 am Mass, our Parish will remember in a special way those who had a funeral Mass at Saint Mary during the past year as well any relative you may wish to remember. This Mass is an opportunity for us to assist those who grieve the death of a loved one. If you wish the name of a loved one who has died during this past year read out at this Mass, please complete the form below and submit it to the office. You are then asked to come to the table in the Gathering Space that morning at 9:30 am to receive a candle to be brought to the altar when the name is called. “Light Up a Memory” “Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s and is now in its 11th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in St. Mary’s Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation. There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 15, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 6. Christmas Sponsor-A-Family Purchase gifts for a family. You select the size of the family you wish to sponsor (2-6 people). Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family. Gifts per person are usually a value of $50 and based on a list of needed items prepared by the family. This program adopts families from Aslan Youth Ministries, The Center in Asbury Park, Family Resource Associates and the Highpoint School. The goal is to sponsor families in need at Christmas.
