Ministry Members Are Needed Why do most people who are involved with ministry get started? One reason is that they see a need and feel that they can contribute to fill that need in their parish. Another is that they have a desire to give back to the worship community and decide to serve in that way. Yet another is the feeling that sitting in the pew is not enough and again there is that desire to be more involved. Whatever the reason may be, your community has a need for volunteer ministry members. Here in our parish, the following ministries are in particular need of new members. Altar Servers - Children who have made their First Holy Communion may serve at the altar of our Lord during weekend Mass and Holy Days. Art/Environment - Lead in the decorating of the campus for Christmas, Easter, and other special occasions. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Assist in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass and/or bring the Eucharist to the sick and homebound. Hospitality - Coordinate food/beverages at events like Agape, Ecumenical Service, etc. Music Ministry - The Magnificat Choir, Youth Choir and handbell choir are always in need of new members to sing (or ring) praise to the Lord and aid the congregation in divine worship. There is no such thing as too many members in a given ministry. The ones outlined above serve frequently and as such require strength in numbers in order to effectively serve our parish community. It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. For many, setting aside any definite time for prayer during the day may seem all but impossible, especially if we are talking about ten or fifteen uninterrupted minutes. Persistence in praying always might need to take the form in our lives of developing the habit of being aware of God’s abiding presence and blessings even in our busyness. It might mean that we learn to catch little moments for prayer (like we sometimes are able to catch moments for catnaps) -while driving to pick up the youngsters or waiting in a checkout line. The place and manner of prayer are not nearly so important as the fact that we pray-always and without ceasing. During the month of October the Universal Church prayerfully reflects on the call to build God’s Kingdom through Missionary activity and heightened awareness of the need for more expansive Evangelization Efforts. The work of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith enables our Roman Catholic Church to proclaim the saving message at every corner of the earth. This is a fundamental part of our identity to go and share the good news. Thank you for your generous prayerful support of this missionary effort. We are also called to struggle with the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of human life at every level from conception through natural death. It is not always easy to embrace this teaching, especially when we begin to put the face of someone who is suffering. As New Jersians we must struggle in a special way with this teaching and the on-going pursuit of for profit scientific research that uses embryonic stem cells that are primarily procured through abortions. This is a complicated issue. However, there is so much that can be advanced with the use of stem cells that are procured
through more ethical and non-life threatening means. Please continue to pray for a greater respect for all human life from conception through natural death. We are now in the full swing of Fall. The activities abound. Allergies are flaring up. Heaters are being cleaned and readied for what some are predicting as a rather severe winter from a climate perspective…? Take some time to enjoy the Fall colors and the chill in the air. This is also a time in our church year when we reflect on the call to be good and faithful stewards of the many gifts God has given us. If you have not already done so, please make time to prayerfully reflect on your Stewardship of Treasure to enable our parish community to meet its obligations and fulfill its mission. Preparations are underway for the Annual Halloween Halls event next weekend. Lots of preparation makes this a great experience for the children of our parish community. The Advent Pancake Breakfast is also on the radar of planning. We need more volunteers to help lead this event. Consider getting involved in this annual community building event. I would like to extend a special greetings to all of our homebound parishioners who are united with us in prayer. Let us remember these parishioners who sacrificed through the years so that our parish community and the facilities we enjoy could be established and sustained. Many thanks to all those who helped to prepare for the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation in our parish. We pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to illumine and strengthen us in our discipleship journey. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Spiritual Direction is being offered by Sr. Pat Schladebeck, MSC who is a certified spiritual director. Information is available in the office explaining spiritual direction. The cost is $60 per session, but no one is turned away if you cannot afford it. Usually the directee and director meet once a month. “Light Up a Memory” Plans for the St. Mary Parish “Memory Tree” 12th Anniversary in December are already underway. A $10.00 donation signifies a light to honor all those we wish to remember during the Christmas season – both living and passed. His/her name will be inscribed in a special “Memory Book”, which will be on display in the Church Gathering Space. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a lovely card to send to the family of the deceased or to the honoree. The deadline for forms is Dec. 3, 2019. All contributions will benefit improvements at the Parish of St. Mary. Participants are also invited to 4 pm Mass and the joyous tree lighting ceremony, with music by St. Mary’s choir and a special reception, with delicious refreshments in the Gathering Space, on Saturday, December 14, 2019. Pastoral Care Training Program – 6 weeks (12 workshops) will be offered “SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS” SEMINAR Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven, NJ November 13th and December 11th, 2019 ARE YOU SEPARATED OR DIVORCED? -Wondering how you will survive Thanksgiving and Christmas? Are you dreading these holidays, knowing that everything has changed and that happy memories from past years can’t be recreated? Our Surviving the Holidays seminar is especially for people who are separated and divorced. You’ll learn how to deal with the many emotions you will face, helpful tips for surviving social events, ways to give your kids a good holiday experience and how to discover hope for your future. Reporting to the pastor, the Parish Catechetical Leader is responsible for strategically planning and administering the Parish catechetical program with a vision towards leading future generations back to the Church, including fall and summer religious education programs for students in grades 1-8, sacramental preparation, and Children’s Liturgy of the Word. The Parish Catechetical Leader also oversees the recruitment, training and spiritual formation of the catechists and volunteers who support this ministry. Candidates are preferred to have a degree in Theology/related field, be a practicing Catholic, and have proven leadership and communication skills.
