October 19th is the memorial of Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues and companions. Brébeuf and Jogues were French Jesuit missionary priests who came to the newly discovered Canadian country in the early 1600s, with the intent to convert the native population of Huron, Algonquin, and Iroquois to Catholicism. While they found early success, they faced constant threats from local tribes who wanted nothing to do with them and found them to be intruders, and from Protestant Dutch and English settlers. Saint Isaac Jogues is noted for having been captured and tortured for over a year, his hands becoming mutilated. He managed to travel to the island of Manhattan, holding the distinction of being the first priest to visit the island, and made his was back to France where he was granted permission to continue celebrating Mass, despite his newfound handicap. He later returned to the New World where he was killed by anti-French Mohawk tribe members. Perhaps coincidentally, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American to be canonized, was born in the village where Jogues died. Saint John de Brébeuf is noted for having composed the lyrics to Canada’s oldest Christmas Carol, The Huron Carol, sometimes known by its first line, “Twas in the moon of Wintertime”. Written to a French melody in the Native Huron language, it tells the story of the humble birth of Jesus, surrounded by the animals, but using imagery known to the Huron people, relating their “Great Spirit” to the spirit of God, Jesus wrapped in rabbit skin, in a lodge of bark, the “chiefs from afar” offering him fox and beaver pelt, etc. He was also captured and tortured by natives, who “baptized” him with boiling water and with fire; it was recounted that he remained silent through his torture, knowing the risks he took when coming to the New World, and content in the souls he had saved through conversion.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The leper was healed while “Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem.” This is what happens to us when by paschal mystery living we walk with Jesus to Jerusalem: on the way we are healed of our infirmities. We are healed each time we come to Eucharist to give praise and thanks to God and in this act of worship we become more perfect members of the body of Christ. We are healed each time we put others ahead of ourselves and in these simple acts we strengthen our faith. We are healed each time we pause a few seconds to “give thanks to God” for the many blessings of each day because by giving thanks to God we acknowledge that God has acted in Christ. Gratitude is an expression of paschal mystery living because by giving thanks we acknowledge our own indebtedness-we are poor and everything we are and are becoming is because God has raised us up. God gives us so much (salvation) and asks so little of us in return (thankfulness). This is but another reminder that our relationship to God isn’t between equals-God’s gifts are lavish, far more than anything we could earn or accomplish on our own. This is why paschal mystery living makes such good sense. By living Jesus’ dying and rising in our own simple everyday tasks, we render God the greatest thanks and worship because our lives become like that of the divine Son. Our thanks are manifestation of God’s salvation. Many thanks to all those who helped to prepare the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi and the blessing of animals and pets. This month we are called and challenged to
reflect on God’s Gift of Human Life and how we can highlight this tremendous gift. The dignity of every human person from conception to natural death is a basic teaching of our church. We support this teaching in lots of ways: by talking with children & grandchildren about human sexuality, about our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, our choices to share our resources for the poor and marginalized, our willingness to be inconvenienced in order to serve the poor and needy in our midst. Respect for Human Life is how we care for the sick and elderly in our community. Many of these women and men sacrificed greatly for us to be here and to enjoy the comforts that many of us have. Let us never forget them in their time of need. During this month of October the Church invites us to rediscover the importance of regular prayer especially the prayer of the Rosary. It is a simple prayer that can be prayed at anytime in almost any situation. This coming Friday our parish will welcome Reverend Msgr. Edward J. Arnister, Episcopal Vicar for Monmouth County who will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to the candidates from our parish community. I ask that you keep these candidates, their parents, sponsors and family members in your prayer. These young people are the future of our Church wherever they may settle as adults. What they encounter here in our parish and within their own family homes will be with them throughout their adult lives. May they continue to grow in their faith and may that faith support their witness of Christ’s presence in our world. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace! CONFIRMANDI Confirmation is Friday, October 18, 4:00 pm (Arrival time is EARLIER) Plan to arrive no later than 2:45 pm Madonna Hall. Candidates, sponsors, and parents gather in Madonna Hall in order to check in, take group pictures, and line up in order to be in the church prior to 3:45 pm. All relatives and friends should plan on being seated in the church prior to 3:45 pm. During the Rite of Confirmation the Celebrant and the priests who are administering the sacrament lay their hands upon those who are to be confirmed. It is here that the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit are received ...“ the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.”

5 - 7 of the Seven Gifts Knowledge is awareness of God’s plan. It is not simply an accumulation of facts but rather an understanding of God’s purpose and how we ought to respond. Knowledge helps bring to light temptations and to discern whether to give in or live a life worthy of God’s approval. Reverence is our obedience to God and our willingness to serve him. It is not just obedience through a sense of duty but rather obedience out of love and devotion. It facilitates a deeper respect for God and the Church. Wonder and awe makes us aware of the glory and majesty of God. This gift is also synonymous with “Fear of the Lord”, in which we dread sin and fear offending God. We fear displeasing God and losing our connection with him. Wonder and awe increases our desire to draw closer to God and depart from sin.
Beginning on October, Spiritual Direction will be offered by Sr. Pat Schladebeck, MSC who is a certified spiritual director. Information is available in the office explaining spiritual direction. The cost is $60 per session, but no one is turned away if you cannot afford it. Usually the directee and director meet once a month. If you are interested please give your name and contact information to the Parish Office.
Men’s Morning Office (MMO) meets every Thursday morning at 6:30 am in the Christ Chapel. “Liturgy of the Hours”meditation and prayer is led each week by one of the men, followed by communion. The service lasts about 30 minutes after which, for those that can stay, we enjoy the camaraderie of one another over coffee & donuts. The invitation is OPEN for all men in the Parish. PLEASE come join us. We’d love to see you!
