All Hallow’s Eve The vigil of All Saints’ Day, All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween, has its roots in the older Christian traditions of holding vigils on the evening prior to a Holy Day in the Church. After a vigil service, worshipers would visit a cemetery and light candles or lay flowers in anticipation of the coming days. In some cultures, there was a belief that on this evening, the the veil between the living and the dead was weak, and people would don masks and costumes so that a departed soul would not recognize them, hence the beginnings of trick-or-treating.
All Saints’ Day The Solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation, is the day when the church celebrates all the Saints and Martyrs, including those unknown, and honors the Church Triumphant (saints and others who have entered the Kingdom of Heaven)
The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Commonly known as All Souls’ Day, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed is a Roman Catholic feast, in which the living faithful pray for the faithful departed who have not yet attained their heavenly reward, as their souls are purified in purgatory. Many churches, including our own, hold Mass on this day, in memory of those who have died in the past year, and it is customary to visit the graves of loved ones following Mass, and to pray for the happy repose of their souls.

Saint of the Week: Saint Simon Apostle and Martyr Perhaps the least known of the Apostles, Simon is only mentioned in the lists contained in the Gospels, referred to as “Simon the Zealot.” Since he received no mention in the Acts of the Apostles which largely concentrated on the activities of the Apostles around Jerusalem and the eastern Mediterranean, Simon may have begun his missionary work among the Jews of Egypt. He may then have worked his way westward through Libya and into present-day Tunisia. There is some evidence that Simon then took the Word to Britain where Christianity seems to have been introduced before the Romans established the island as a colony in the year 43. Simon was ardent in his preaching the Word of God. This passion carried him from almost one end of the known world to the other. Read More...

All Souls Remembrance For the month of November It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection boxes anytime beginning in October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. Online givers can also send in their All Souls remembrance thru our online giving system at GIVE ONLINE HERE Thank you for preserving our Catholic traditions and honoring those who have gone before us.

Men’s Morning Office The Thursday Men’s Morning Office has been meeting since 1981 when it was formed by now Pastor Emeritus William J. Bausch. As of September 2021, we have about 20 men meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am in the Chapel for prayer. We usually conclude our prayer service by 7:30 am, and then enjoy some coffee, donuts & camaraderie for 15-20 minutes before all are on their way. With an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+, we welcome any men in the Parish or cohort to come join us any Thursday morning for prayer & fellowship! An Invitation from The Martha Mary Guild Veterans Day Meeting Wednesday, November 10th ~ 11:30am Every year the Martha Mary Guild has a special meeting in November that honors our veterans. This year the meeting will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 10, the day before the nation celebrates Veterans Day. Our special guest will be Master Chief Petty Officer Rozette M. Maserlian, U. S. Navy. Command Master Chief Masrelian, a native of Van Nuys, CA, enlisted in June 1997 and has completed many areas of training, including serving as the CMC of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron-25, the "Island Knights" on Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. She is currently the CMC of Naval Weapons Station at Earle. She is also the recipient of several awards: a Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, with four gold stars and various unit commendations and service ribbons. Join us at 11:30 a.m. in Madonna Hall for the rosary, followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch). Then Master Chief Petty Officer Maserlian will discuss what it is like for a woman to serve in the military and her many adventures. We will be collecting Toys for Tots - new toys for children of all ages.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the immediacy of our everyday lives we don’t see our specific choices as determining how we spend eternity. We tend to think of all our choices in the same vein as choosing a TV channel or ice cream—whatever is good for us is a right choice. But this solemnity in general and the gospel in particular remind us that we must make a choice for Christ. We must choose to live out our baptismal commitment by dying to self so that we might rise with Christ. This is the only way to new life. Each choice we make—no matter how small and seemingly insignificant—truly does take us either closer to God and each other or farther away. The gospel invites us to think of our everyday choices as having consequences—eternal life. This weekend we welcome those families participating in the Halloween Halls festivities. I am grateful to all those who are making this a reality once again. Last year we were prevented from hosting this. I am pleased to announce that we will resume the annual Easter Egg Hunt in 2022. The Pancake breakfast will be deferred one more year with a planned return for Advent 2022. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. This weekend we welcome those families who have experienced the death of a loved one. Coming together with family and friends to celebrate the mass and receive holy communion is one way we can be united with those who have gone before us. Continuing the day by sharing memories and stories of our beloved dead keeps their memory alive and reminds us of the sacrifices they have made for us and we in turn make for successive family generations. This week we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. Mass will be celebrated 9am, Monday 1
November in the church. The Commemoration of the Faith Departed (All Souls Day) will be celebrated 9am, Tuesday 2 November in the church. Please consider joining us for mass as we begin this Month of All Saints and All Souls. Your All Souls Intentions will be placed in the church as we continue to honor those who have gone before us in faith. I have asked our parish staff and those with whom they collaborate to assist our upcoming social outreach programs and how we might continued to provide needed items and support for Thanksgiving, Christmas and regular food support. We have been advised to prepare for a 30% increase in the cost of turkeys to be distributed this year. Last year we distributed 177 and 225+ food baskets. With the constant news about the supply chain challenges we will be setting up the “Tree of Love” early in November. This will allow for more shopping time or the opportunity to order items online, receive them and bring them to the church for distribution. I think it wise and prudent that we be pro-active especially this year. The organizations that we support depend on US and we can’t disappoint them especially this year. I trust in your continued generosity for our parish and these important outreach initiatives. Also, I anticipate early opportunities for the “Sponsor A Family” initiative. Thank you for your generous sharing! Next weekend the clocks are to be adjusted… Fall Back One Hour. The days continue to get shorter and the nights longer. It is important to be outdoors during the day when the sun is shining. Take a walk in one of our parks or along the path at town hall. It is important for our homebound persons to open up shades and drapes each day to allow the sun to come in and brighten the day. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. “Light Up a Memory” Preparations for the "Memory Tree" lighting this year have already started. A $10.00 contribution signifies a light in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of a living person. His/her name will be inscribed in a special "Memory book", which will be on display in the Church Narthex. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a lovely card to send to the recipient or the family of a deceased honoree.
The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2021. Submissions after deadline are included in the addendum of the Memory Book.
