Saint Francis of Assisi Saint Francis is perhaps one of the most well-known Catholic saints, being the patron of ecology and animals, with the blessing of animals often taking place on his feast day, the 4th of October. What is less known in popular culture about the Saint is his early life. He was born into a wealthy family, grew up with money, and worked closely with his father as a cloth merchant. He spent money freely, often partied, and what hardly what we might consider a man of God. When Francis was about 25 years old, he had a conversion of faith after having God speak to him in a dream and hearing the voice of Christ while praying in a derelict chapel in San Damiano (outside of Assisi), renounced his father and his business, and took to living a life a poverty. Francis would preach about penitence, love of neighbor, detachment from worldly possessions, and peace, despite not be ordained. He began to gather followers, and they petitioned the local bishop to be recognized as a Christian Order, which was later informally granted by Pope Innocent III; this was the beginnings of the Franciscan Order. Less than one month before his death, Francis was praying during a 40day retreat, when he had a vision of an angel and received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. Francis is known for his love and care for the environment and all of creation, peace among all, and was also the first to erect a Nativity Scene for Christmas, using live animals and a straw-filled feeding trough for the infant Jesus, so that worshippers would get a better sense of the humble circumstances through which Christ entered our world. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX just two years after his death. Pope Saint John Paul II later named Saint Francis the patron saint of Ecology.

Religious Eulalie Durocher was born in St. Antoine, Quebec, on October 6, 1811, the tenth of eleven children. When she was 16, Eulalie felt a calling to a religious life, but her frail health caused her to be turned away by religious orders. While working in a parish, she became very concerned about the quality of religious education being offered there. Knowing Eulalie’s concern for the education of children, her confessor, Fr. Pierre Telmon, with the concurrence of Bishop Bourget, urged her to start such a teaching order.

All Souls Remembrance For the month of November It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection boxes anytime beginning in October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. The Thursday Men’s Morning Office
has been meeting since 1981 when it was formed by now Pastor Emeritus William J. Bausch. As of September 2021, we have about 20 men meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am in the Chapel for prayer. We usually conclude our prayer service by 7:30 am, and then enjoy some coffee, donuts & camaraderie for 15-20 minutes before all are on their way. With an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+, we welcome any men in the Parish or cohort to come join us any Thursday morning for prayer & fellowship!

An Invitation from the Martha Mary Guild
Join us on Wednesday, October 13th at 11:30am This year's October meeting will be a bit different, due to COVID restrictions. Instead of the Pot Luck Luncheon, the Guild will supply individual sandwiches and desserts - with a guarantee that you will enjoy them! Also, since there was no Clothing Sale, the annual Fashion Show will feature items from previous Sales. The models will use their ingenuity to present "oldies, but goodies". This is always a fun show!. Another important event at this meeting will be the induction and welcoming of our new members and re-commitment of current members.
All ladies of the parish (and our co-hort parishes) are welcome to join us on Wednesday, October 13 in the Spiritual Center. The rosary will be prayed at 11:30a.m., lunch will be served at noon and the Fashion Show will follow.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. God’s design for all of creation is that it be harmonious and whole. Paradoxically, it’s the rhythm of the paschal mystery—between dying and rising—that keeps us harmonious and whole. Dying to self means that our own selfish interests are not put ahead of the good of another—which promotes harmony. The new life that always comes from self-giving is a sign of wholeness. Always what stands in the way of harmony and wholeness is hardness of heart—our own or another’s. The challenge is in the example of Jesus: embrace and bless even the little ones. October 7th is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Many in our parish community have a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under this title. Let us continue to invoke the intercession of the Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary for World Peace, Healing and Reconciliation and greater tolerance of diversity. During the month of October we pray for a greater awareness of the need to Respect Life at every stage from Conception to Natural Death. This October take some time to familiarize yourself with the vast teachings of our church. This might be a good time for you to consider making out a “living will” or “advance directives” for healthcare. It is necessary for you and for your survivors to know and clearly understand your intentions. Please be responsible. October is also the month when we as Christians focus on Stewardship: Sharing Our Time, Talent & Treasure. Take some time to reflect on how we are called to be better stewards of the time, talent and blessings God has given to us. Take time connect your faith life to the many details of daily living as a
Catholic Christian. I expect that you, all of our registered parishioners, will receive an electronic copy of our Parish Stewardship Newsletter in the coming weeks. It will also be posted to our website. This is the fruit of many hours of work by our staff and leadership teams. This report is not an extra. Every parishioner has a right to know the details contained in this report. It is a way in which the staff renders an accountable statement to you our parishioners, benefactors and friends as stakeholders. Do not hesitate to ask our Parish Trustees or staff members for clarification of questions that might arise. Transparent administration is something that you should expect and that we strive to sustain. Father Victor Hoagland, CP who has assisted our parish for nearly 30 years will be here to celebrate mass this weekend and next weekend with our parish community. This is the first time Father Victor will be with us since February 2020. We welcome him “home”. During this Month of October we will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation administered by Reverend Msgr. Joseph N. Rosie, Episcopal Vicar for Monmouth County. This will be Monsignor Rosie’s first visit to our parish since being appointed EV by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton. October is also the month when we celebrate First Holy Communions with our children and their families. Let us keep these and their catechists in our prayer. Monday, 4 October 2021 is the memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi. Our parish will keep the custom of Blessing Animals under the canopy of the Main Church Entrance at 6:15pm sharp. Respect Life Month 2021 | Reflection St. Joseph: Faithful Protector of Mother and Child
The infant Christ “came into our world in a state of great vulnerability. He needed to be defended, protected, cared for and raised by Joseph” (PC 5). The humble and often hidden carpenter of Nazareth accompanied Mary in her pregnancy, assisted at the birth of the Messiah in a stable, presented Jesus in the Temple, fled with his family far from their homeland to protect them, and lovingly raised Jesus as his own son in the years to come. While the angel of the Lord appeared to Mary to announce that she would bring forth the Savior of the world, it was revealed to Joseph in a series of dreams how God’s plans would be brought to fulfillment. As Pope Francis highlights, “God trusted Joseph, as did Mary, who found in him someone who would not only save her life, but would always provide for her and her child” (PC 5). Like every other human family, the Holy Family had to confront real and concrete challenges. Yet, “in every situation, Joseph declared his own ‘fiat’” (PC 3). His “yes” to the Lord meant that regardless of the hardship and personal sacrifice to himself, he consistently chose to put the needs of Mary and Jesus before his own. Joseph’s devotion helps reveal to us our own call to show special care for the lives of those whom God has entrusted to us. During this Year of St. Joseph, each of us can find in him “an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble” (PC, Intro). Joseph shows us how to say “yes” to life, despite our own fears, frailties, and weaknesses. For it is Joseph who was “chosen by God to guide the beginnings of the history of redemption. He was the true ‘miracle’ by which God saves the child and his mother” (PC 5). May we, too, be miracles in the lives of those who are most in need, especially at the beginning and end of life. Dear St. Joseph, you who were “able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting always in divine providence” (PC 5), help us to imitate your faithful trust and courage.
