October is the month of the Holy Rosary The earliest known precursor to the Rosary were knotted prayer ropes, used by early Christians, but the practice also has pre-Christianic roots. The concept of the Rosary as we know today is thought to have to come to Saint Dominic in the 13th century, through an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The praying of the Rosary by laity is a parallel to the praying of the liturgy of the hours by clergy. The structure of the prayers developed into its modern form during the next 3 centuries, which included the placement of the Invitatory prayer, Lord’s prayer, Apostles Creed, Hail Mary, Salve Regina, Doxology, et cetera, and remained relatively unchanged until the last century. Another development during this time period was the recitation and mediation on the Mysteries of the Rosary: Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious, by St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, a French priest living in the 17th century. There are 5 mysteries per category, each prayed for one decade of the Rosary In the early-mid 20th century, it became common, especially in group devotional prayer, to add one of the Fatima prayers along with the Doxology. In 2002, Pope Saint John Paul II added another group of mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries. There are several ways to pray the Rosary, with many prescriptions including the time of year, time of day, or how many decades, or which mysteries should be meditated upon, with the simplest being a single decade using a rosary ring or rosary bracelet, often suggested for children first learning about the Rosary, (thus completing one full Rosary over the course of a week), to four full recitations including each mystery, more common on devotional days such as Divine Mercy Sunday (2nd Sunday of Easter), Our Lady of Fatima (May 13), our Lady of the Rosary (October 7) and other Marian feasts.

Saint of the Week: Hildegard von Bingen 1098-1179
Religious Hildegard was born to a noble family in Böckelheim, Germany in 1098. As a young child, she was very sickly and, as a consequence, did not receive much education. At an early age, Hildegard began to have visions. At first, embarrassed by them, she refused to tell anyone other than her teacher and a local monk. The visions continued through her life and, later, she was told in a vision to write down what she was seeing. Having never learned to write, Hildegard began to dictate what she was seeing to her monk friend. As well as the many books attributed to her, Hildegard composed hundreds of musical compositions noted for their departure from the plain chant common at the time. Even those of us who may be suffering physical ills and have little formal education have been given talents by God. We should not let these talents lay idle.

All Souls Remembrance For the month of November It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection boxes anytime beginning in October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. We are here and ready to share the richness of our faith with you. If you’ve been looking everywhere for answers, and still haven’t found them, we invite you to find out what the Catholic Church offers. RCIA is a comprehensive process, in which the Church supports and encourages the spiritual journeys of those who are unbaptized and seeking to become Catholic and for those who are baptized Catholic or in another Christian denomination who wish to complete their Sacraments of Initiation (First Eucharist and Confirmation). Interested in assisting with our RCIA program? Do you want to help by being an Ambassador for Christ? The RCIA process involves not just the newcomer/inquirer but all members of the Faith community whose prayers and example help the newcomer find their place in the Church. Jesus knew that everyone has different gifts and those gifts are used best when they are shared with others. Typical tasks and responsibilities: Listening and preparing adults in a process to be received into the Catholic faith and parish community. Required training or skills: 1.5 hr. training session, weekly. Approximate time commitment: This is dependent on those who are seeking initiation or welcome into the Catholic community.

Men’s Morning Office The Thursday Men’s Morning Office has been meeting since 1981 when it was formed by now Pastor Emeritus William J. Bausch. As of September 2021, we have about 20 men meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am in the Chapel for prayer. We usually conclude our prayer service by 7:30 am, and then enjoy some coffee, donuts & camaraderie for 15-20 minutes before all are on their way. With an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+, we welcome any men in the Parish or cohort to come join us any Thursday morning for prayer & fellowship! Wednesday, October 13th at 11:30am This year's October meeting will be a bit different, due to COVID restrictions. Instead of the Pot Luck Luncheon, the Guild will supply individual sandwiches and desserts - with a guarantee that you will enjoy them! Also, since there was no Clothing Sale, the annual Fashion Show will feature items from previous Sales. The models will use their ingenuity to present "oldies, but goodies". This is always a fun show! Another important event at this meeting will be the induction and welcoming of our new members and re-commitment of current members. All ladies of the parish (and our co-hort parishes) are welcome to join us on Wednesday, October 13 in the Spiritual Center. The rosary will be prayed at 11:30a.m., lunch will be served at noon and the Fashion Show will follow.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The “rich man” who couldn’t “give up” his wealth was not ready to follow Jesus. Jesus’ path/journey led to the cross—where everything is given up! The “one more thing” is living the path to the cross! Jesus’ covenant goes beyond the old commandments to paschal living. Peter, speaking for Jesus’ disciples, says that they “have given up everything.” They are ready to follow him to the cross. Jesus’ teaching about giving up everything is truly demanding but this is the only way to receive a hundredfold now and in eternal life. This is another description of discipleship, of paschal living: “giving up” is dying, receiving a hundredfold now is experienced in terms of already sharing in the glory of eternal life. During the month of October we observe World Mission Sunday. The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is the strategic arm of our Catholic Church which remains focused on the spread of our faith in developing cultures among indigenous people. It remains the responsibility of Catholics throughout the world to foster a missionary spirit in caring for the needs of the poor not only in our own communities, diocese, country, but throughout the world. As the world continues to get smaller due in part to satellite telecommunications, there continues to be a disconnect in our ability expand our sense of mission when it comes to spreading our faith. It is fair to say that while we are doing some good, we are being out staffed and out funded by other Christians, especially the more fundamentalist groups. Let us continue to support our Holy Father and the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Our participation and prayerful support is yet another way in which we demonstrate our respect for all human life, from the womb to the tomb. I am grateful to you for your sharing regularly by participating in our local food collection…placing non perishable items in the receptacle located in the church building narthex. There continues to be an increase of financial support, especially among our on-line givers, regularly by scheduling it using the appropriate drop box. Preparations are under way for the Thanksgiving Food Drive as well as the vari-
ous Advent Giving opportunities. Keep a look for particulars in upcoming bulletins. I ask you to join with me in praying for our confirmandi, those candidates to be confirmed, this coming week in our parish, their parents and their sponsors. We will welcome Reverend Monsignor Joseph N. Rosie, Episcopal Vicar for Monmouth County, to our parish as he administers the Sacrament of Confirmation to our candidates. This sacrament completes the formal process of Christian Initiation into the church. It also begins the life long period of learning about the teachings of the church and striving to integrate them into daily living. Next weekend and the following weekend we will welcome families at the 10:00am and 12Noon masses who are presenting their children for their First Holy Communion. It is a beautiful and grace-filled time for our parish and the universal church. It is wonderful to pray with these families and to witness the progress of the children. Should you wish to avoid these festivities, plan to attend another mass. Should you choose to attend know that “your seat” might be occupied by a visitor. I trust that you will help to make all among us feel welcome. The Church Tower Carrilon is no longer working. The speakers were installed in 1973. The original system and amplifier were replaced in 1993. The current driver and amplifier are 28 years old. Our staff has been in contact with the manufacturer to receive proposals for repleacement/upgrade options. Since this is project is not part of the FYE 30 June 2022 Capital Budget we will need to evaluate what can be deferred in order to restore the carillon (bell sound) to our campus. Thank you for understanding, your patience and your continued financial support. This Sunday I will be making my way to the Parish of Saint Michael, West End (Long Branch) to serve as the homilist for the annual Red Mass which is a gathering of Catholic Judges, Lawyers and others involved in the Legal Community within our Diocese of Trenton.
