Requiem Mass A Requiem Mass is offered for the repose of the soul(s) of one of more deceased persons. Also known as a Mass for the Dead, the Mass gets this name from the Latin text of the entrance antiphon, Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, (grant them eternal rest, O Lord) and it is most familiar in the form of a Mass of Christian Burial, or funeral Mass, but may also be celebrated on anniversaries of an individual’s death, or for an occasion such as All Souls’ Day, in which we pray for the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed. The proper texts from the requiem Mass have often been used as the source material for composers to write musical settings. Famous requiems include those by W.A. Mozart, Gabriel Fauré, even Andrew Lloyd Webber; and these musical settings are mostly used outside of Mass in a concert setting, although they could be used (if stylistically appropriate and realistically accomplished) in a liturgical setting as well. I, for example, have sung the Fauré Requiem in both a concert setting and at an All Souls Mass. In recent years, the welcomed addition of several choices of readings to be used at a funeral Mass, the selection of different music to replace the propers has come into practice along with it. This is somewhat unfortunate as these are some beautiful texts set to some beautiful melodies. It has since become our custom here to re-introduce the communion proper, “Let perpetual light shine upon them O Lord” and the In paradisum (may the angels lead you to paradise), although not in its intended place, although we will get there in time. This is not to say that other music does not belong at a funeral Mass, but it is important that we centuries of tradition alive as well, finding that balance between tradition and new material.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Please arrive earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks, Hand Sanitizer, and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the
Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side. Remove mask (and gloves) as you approach the Eucharist; put mask back in place as you return to your pew Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday). We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms, etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass. NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We rarely, if ever, view our daily Christian living in light of the final coming of Christ. But his final coming is, in fact, the context which gives meaning to our daily behavior and our ongoing hope. If we are not ready at the Second Coming of Christ (with its accompanying judgment), we can’t count on anyone else to cover for us. We are provided now with all we need (for example, wisdom, invitation to vigilance, warnings about preparedness) to be ready when Christ comes. The real challenge is that we don’t think of this as merely a future event that won’t happen in our own lifetime. We don’t know when Christ will come again! And so Christian living requires that we act each day as if this were the day when our Bridegroom will come and invite us to the feast. Many thanks to all those who assisted with the Mass of Commemoration. The Lazarus Ministry serves our parishioners well and many have commented how comforted they feel coming here to our parish for the Rites of Christian Burial. The Bereavement Ministry likewise offers opportunities for those seeking support following the death of a loved one. These ministries are possible due to the Stewardship of Time and Talent of those directly involved and the Stewardship of Treasure that supports our parish so that we can share these beautiful facilities for a myriad of uses. Let us continue to pray regularly for the repose of all the Holy Souls, especially during this month of November when the Universal Church focuses on All Saints and All Souls. Preparations are being made for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, the Advent Giving Tree, Adopt a Family Christmas Program, and the
Christmas Food Drive. Please consult the bulletin and e-blasts for more detailed information. We have been so very blessed and it is an important faith response to share not only from our abundance but also from our want. Thank you for remembering the poor and needy of our time and showing them that the Roman Catholic Church continues to be the world’s largest single deliverer of charitable services and goods. That is something that all of us can be proud to share, especially with some of the more skeptical folks in our community and workplaces. May God continue to direct all of our efforts. As the leaves continue to fall and the daylight becomes shortened we know that Fall is passing and Winter draws near. Take the opportunity to spend some time outdoors before the weather becomes less pleasant. This coming week our country will observe Veteran’s Day. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am so that we can prayerfully remember those who have served in the armed forces protecting the freedom that we enjoy. Just a reminder to plan your Thanksgiving Day celebration to begin with the celebration of Mass here in our parish church. Thanking God for the many and varied blessings we have is a fitting way to begin our civic observance. As I pen these thoughts, our country is in the midst of a Presidential Election time. Let us pray for a peaceful resolution to this great act of voting. Let us pray for an increased tolerance of one another. Let us pray for all those who have been elected to serve in public office and those who valiantly put themselves forward to serve and were not elected. Let us pray for a deeper respect for others. Martha Mary November Meeting Angela Juffey - Master Gardener Angela Juffey will share one of her many talents with the Martha Mary Guild at the next General Meeting on Nov. 18, 2020. (Please note that the meeting is postponed to the 3rd Wed., due to Veterans’ Day.) Besides being a former Middle School teacher, a beekeeper, an active member of the Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center, and a jewelry maker, Angela is a Master Gardener who creates terrariums. Her presentation “Terrariums: Gardens in Glass” will help us to face winter by looking indoors for the beauty of nature. “Various types of harmonizing plants will be exhibited, along with tips and tricks to make your terrarium truly unique.” We will learn about open and closed terrariums that will serve as a “breath of fresh air” for all of us! We will take every precaution for “Covid Awareness”, by spacious seating arrangements, wearing masks and abstaining from refreshments for this meeting. Join us in Madonna Hall at noon if you want to bring your lunch. Angela will start her interesting program at 12:30. We will be praying the rosary in the chapel meeting room at 11:30 a.m.
