The Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran, is the largest of the papal basilicas, the oldest church in Europe, and is the cathedral church of Rome, and the seat of the Pope, the bishop of Rome. It is important to note, however, the Basilica is in Rome proper, and not in Vatican City. Consequently, the Pope more often celebrates Mass with a general audience at Saint Peter’s in Vatican City, and not at the Lateran basilica. The complex is filled with intricate marble-work, stone, statues, other artwork and relics. Some items of note are: Larger than life statues of the 12 apostles (the great convert, Paul, in place of Judas the betrayer) One of 8 officially designated Holy Doors, which are cemented shut and only opened during Jubilee years, upon decree from the Pope Many Papal tombs The Holy Stairs - the marble steps, originally leading to Pilate’s praetorium in Jerusalem, upon which Jesus walked on his way to his trial before Pilate during his passion. Moved to Rome, they are covered with wooden steps to protect the ancient structure. Also of note, as the cathedral church of Rome, the Archbasilica also stands as the mother church of the world, and its dedication date of November 9 is celebrated as a feast day in the Catholic Church.
Saint of the Week: Saint Martin de Porres Religious Martin was the illegitimate son of a Spanish knight and a freed Panamanian slave. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, he was part of the poorest and lowest level of society. As a young man, Martin applied to the Dominicans to be a "lay-helper" because he didn't himself feel worthy to be a religious brother. He often spent his nights in prayer, while his days were filled with caring for the sick and the poor. He founded an orphanage and looked after the slaves brought from Africa. After nine years, his example of prayer and penance, charity and humility, led his religious community to ask Martin to make a full religious profession. All of us are children of God and all of us deserve justice in our dealings with others. Martin cared not whether those he helped were slaves or free men, rich or poor. If they needed his help, he was available to them. We should do no less.. Read More...

Penance & Reconciliation Rehearsal & Retreat is a two day mandatory event for all 2nd graders from the summer and fall 2021 RE program. It will take place in the church at either 5pm or 6pm the 23rd & 30th of November. Please RSVP here with the time you will attend on each day. We ask that at least one parent be present with the child.
We will begin Liturgy of the Word Dismissal again early in 2022. We are in need of parent volunteers to help facilitate the program. Please SIGN UP HERE if you are interested and we reach out with more details.

Take time this week to think about all the good things God has given you and your family. How can you and your family give back to God? Talk about ways to share your time, talent, or treasure to help others.
For one week, keep track of some of the many appeals for charity you witness, either in the mail or on the television. Take time as a family to pray in a special way for all those in need.
If you are able, make a donation to a charity that your family has prayed for.
Plan a way for your family to participate in local food drives being organized for Thanksgiving. (Sign up for Thanksgiving Baskets Collection at Saint Mary!) Help your child learn to give of his or her time, treasure, and talent.

Men’s Morning Office The Thursday Men’s Morning Office has been meeting since 1981 when it was formed by now Pastor Emeritus William J. Bausch. As of September 2021, we have about 20 men meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am in the Chapel for prayer. We usually conclude our prayer service by 7:30 am, and then enjoy some coffee, donuts & camaraderie for 15-20 minutes before all are on their way. With an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+, we welcome any men in the Parish or cohort to come join us any Thursday morning for prayer & fellowship! An Invitation from The Martha Mary Guild Veterans Day Meeting Wednesday, November 10th ~ 11:30am Every year the Martha Mary Guild has a special meeting in November that honors our veterans. This year the meeting will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 10, the day before the nation celebrates Veterans Day. Our special guest will be Master Chief Petty Officer Rozette M. Maserlian, U. S. Navy. Command Master Chief Masrelian, a native of Van Nuys, CA, enlisted in June 1997 and has completed many areas of training, including serving as the CMC of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron-25, the "Island Knights" on Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. She is currently the CMC of Naval Weapons Station at Earle. She is also the recipient of several awards: a Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, with four gold stars and various unit commendations and service ribbons. Join us at 11:30 a.m. in Madonna Hall for the rosary, followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch). Then Master Chief Petty Officer Maserlian will discuss what it is like for a woman to serve in the military and her many adventures. We will be collecting Toys for Tots - new toys for children of all ages.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. A child’s handmade birthday card to Mom is as precious to her as Dad’s gift of jewelry. It is not the size of the gift which measures its value but the depth of the self-gift from which it comes. Placing ourselves at the center of worldly values---status, clothes, seats of honor, power, wealth---gains us condemnation. Surrendering ourselves as disciples at the service of others and living a life of selfgiving gains us salvation. But how easily we are fooled about where our hearts truly lie! We might look at the widow’s giving all she had as a foreshadowing of Jesus giving his all on the cross. The good news is that when we surrender our all there is a constant reversal in the order of things: oppressed to protected; beneficiary to benefactor; master to servant; least to greatest; last to first; condemnation to salvation; poverty to surplus; death to life. When we give our all we never run out. God is the one who is always there to provide. The paschal mystery reminds us that if we rely on ourselves and amass our own treasures, we will lose everything. If we surrender ourselves in loving self-sacrifice, we gain everything. The choice is ours. Discipleship doesn’t mean that we necessarily do big and heroic things. It does mean that we do everything and meet whatever challenges come our way with hearts set right---we give of ourselves for the good of others. During the month of November we reflect on the Communion of Saints and All the holy Souls who have gone before us. We
pray that through the intercession of the Holy Ones our prayers might be answered. We pray for the repose of all the Holy Souls who are no longer with us in this world as they continue their journey toward the Heavenly realm. This is the hope and promise of all who have been baptized. Plans are well underway for our Thanksgiving Food Drive. There are different ways to participate. Consult the bulletin for how you might best participate. This year we are beginning the Sponsor a family and Tree of Love gift giving opportunities much earlier than previous years. It is our hope to give more time for acquiring gifts in support of these needy causes. Thank you.
The annual Thanksgiving Ecumenical Prayer Service will be hosted here in our parish on Tuesday, 23 November at 7:30pm. Rev. Gene Ryan of Colts Neck Reformed Church will be the homilist this year. Our parish will gather for the Eucharist on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00am in the church. What a great way to begin a day of thanksgiving by receiving Holy Communion. I am so grateful to all who helped prepare the various liturgical celebrations this past month. You continue to make our parish community a special place for prayer and community building. I have received many positive comments from parishioners and many visitors on the prayerfulness of our parishioners. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. The Tree of Love will be making its debut earlier this year on the weekend of November 13-14, to allow extra time to shop for gifts. Some groups are continuing with gift cards this year due to volunteer shortages / Covid concerns but there will be tags on the tree for children's toys and gifts for nursing home residents. As in the past, please take a tag from the tree, fulfill the request ($25 value) and return the gift with tag attached no later than December 5th. Thank you for your generosity towards those in need. “Light Up a Memory” Preparations for the "Memory Tree" lighting this year have already started. A $10.00 contribution signifies a light in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of a living person. His/her name will be inscribed in a special "Memory book", which will be on display in the Church Narthex. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a lovely card to send to the recipient or the family of a deceased honoree.
The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2021. Submissions after deadline are included in the addendum of the Memory Book. Participants are also invited to the joyous tree lighting ceremony, with music by our Magnificat Choir at the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday, December 11, 2021.

Christmas Sponsor-A-Family Purchase gifts for a family. You select the size of the family you wish to sponsor (2-6 people). Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family.
