The Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran
is the largest of the papal basilicas, the oldest church in Europe, and is the cathedral church of Rome, and the seat of the Pope, the bishop of Rome. It is important to note, however, the Basilica is in Rome proper, and not in Vatican City. Consequently, the Pope more often celebrates Mass with a general audience at Saint Peter’s in Vatican City, and not at the Lateran basilica. The complex is filled with intricate marble-work, stone, statues, other artwork and relics. Some items of note are: Larger than life statues of the 12 apostles (The apostle and evangelist Paul, takes the place of Judas the betrayer) One of 8 officially designated Holy Doors, which are cemented shut and only opened during Jubilee years, upon decree from the Pope Many Papal tombs The Holy Stairs - the marble steps, originally leading to Pilate’s praetorium in Jerusalem, upon which Jesus walked on his way to his trial before Pilate during his passion. Moved to Rome, they are covered with wooden steps to protect the ancient structure. Also of note, as the cathedral church of Rome, the Archbasilica also stands as the mother church of the world, the model for Catholic churches around the world. Its dedication date of November 9 is celebrated as a feast day in the Catholic Church.
Saint of the Week: Elizabeth of Hungary, Wife, Mother and Religious, 1207-1231 Elizabeth, the daughter of royal parents, became betrothed to Ludwig of Thuringia at the age of four. She was sent to the court at Thuringia where the two children were raised together and became dear friends. In 1221, Ludwig turned twenty-one and became the Landgrave (ruler) of Thuringia. Quo vadis . . .
My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Paschal mystery living means that we live this life, so that it is infused with the life that is to come. The dying part of the mystery always reminds us that suffering and death pale in comparison to the categorically new life that God offers us in Christ. When we live our Christian life, like the brothers in the first reading we will meet with controversy. In fact, controversy may be a sign of integrity since truly living the gospel always precipitates conflict. This doesn’t mean that we go out looking for controversy; it dies means that when controversy happens because of the authenticity of our Christian living, we see through the controversy with hope for eternal life. This week our country observes Veteran’s Day. We will celebrate the Eucharist and offer our prayer for all veterans, living and deceased, as well as their family members. Serving in the armed forces is a noble career and we should never forget that the freedom we enjoy rests upon the sacrifices that many have made through the years.
Parish Families with children preparing for the Sacrament of First Penance & Reconciliation will be gathering soon to prepare for the reception of this sacrament. During the preparation to receive the Holy Eucharist for the first time, families can participate in the lottery to select the day, date & time for the mass during which their child will receive this Holy Sacrament. These are great moments for our parish community. Our Parish Advent Penance & Reconciliation Service is scheduled for Sunday, 4 De-
cember 2022 at 3:00pm. Please make a note in your personal schedule and plan to participate. We will have 14 priest confessors for your convenience. Don’t forget our Thanksgiving Food Drive as listed in the bulletin. We need your participation to continue the great tradition of sharing that has long characterized our parish community. Those who participate in the on-line giving program can select to designate a one time or on-going financial gift for the poor and needy/charitable appeals. The month of November reminds us of the “Universal Call to Holiness” that is fundamental to all of the baptized. Stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure is one way in which we show forth our holiness by sharing with others and to advance the mission of the church. When we reflect of=n the Communion of Saints it becomes abundantly clear that any of them were ordinary people who became extraordinary through God’s Grace. May we continue to recognize God in the ordinary stuff of life. Enjoy these beautiful Autumn Days. Remember to sign up for the Fall Clean up. This is a great way to help keep our parish campus looking great while caring for our environment. Don’t forget to vote this coming Tuesday if you have not done so already. Women's Tuesday Morning Group This is an invitation to all women of the parish to participate in a weekly group exploring the upcoming readings and gospel.
“Light Up a Memory” Preparations for the "Memory Tree" lighting this year have already started. A $10.00 contribution signifies a light in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of a living person. His/her name will be inscribed in a special "Memory Book", which will be on display in the Church Narthex. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a Remembrance cards available in the Church Office during regular office hours for those who want to pick them up.
The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2022.
Submissions after deadline are included in the addendum of the Memory Book. Participants are also invited to the joyous tree lighting ceremony, with music by our Children’s Choir at the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday, December 10, 2022. Please follow link HERE to sponsor a light.

WOMEN OF HOPE THE FOUR WOMEN DOCTORS OF THE CHURCH 5 Thursdays 9:30 – 11:30 AM In Women of Hope, Terry Polakovic introduces these four amazing women, Saints Teresa, Thérèse, Hildegard and Catherine, and describes the troubled times in which they lived and persevered. These women remind us that God works through each of us to bring about good. They prove by their lives that we, as Christians, can live in confident hope, no matter the circumstances in which we find ourselves. Donation: $100
