The Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran is the largest of the papal basilicas, the oldest church in Europe, and is the cathedral church of Rome, and the seat of the Pope, the bishop of Rome. It is important to note, however, the Basilica is in Rome proper, and not in Vatican City. Consequently, the Pope more often celebrates Mass with a general audience at Saint Peter’s in Vatican City, and not at the Lateran basilica. Hence, there can sometimes be some confusion between the two, with Saint John’s often being overshadowed or overlooked by the more famous Saint Peter’s. The complex at the Lateran Basilica is noted for being filled with intricate marble-work, stone, statues, other artwork and relics. Some items of note are: Larger than life statues of the 12 apostles (The apostle and evangelist Paul, takes the place of Judas the betrayer) One of 8 officially designated Holy Doors, which are cemented shut and only opened during Jubilee years, upon decree from the Pope. Many Papal tombs The Holy Stairs - the marble steps, originally leading to Pilate’s praetorium in Jerusalem, upon which Jesus walked on his way to his trial before Pilate during his passion. Moved to Rome, they are covered with wooden steps to protect the ancient structure. Also of note, as the cathedral church of Rome, the Archbasilica also stands as the mother church of the world, the model for Catholic churches around the world. Its dedication date of November 9 is celebrated as a feast day in the Catholic Church. The Light Up A Memory ceremony will take place after the 4:00 PM Mass on Saturday, December 16. It is that time to decide who you would like to remember on our Parish's Beautiful "Memory Tree"! A donation of $10.00 per light will honor a loved one (living or deceased), and the lights will shine until the Christmas season is over on Epiphany. It is so touching to hear the children of our Religious Ed. Program each year singing hymns with the congregation during the lighting ceremony. There will be a special Memory Book on display in the Church Gathering Space, where all the names will be inscribed. Each $10 donation also entitles the donor to get a card to send to the family of the deceased or to the honoree. Cards can be picked up at the parish office. The deadline to submit THIS FORM is Monday, December 4. Thank you for participating in this wonderful parish tradition.

All Souls Remembrance
For the month of November It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection boxes anytime beginning in October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. Quo vadis for November 5. . . My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. Everything in our life falls into place if we never lose sight of what is to be our primary relationship and behavior: love God above all others and all else. If we keep our sight on this primary relationship, not only do our relationships with each other fill into place. It is instead seen as the humility that makes a disciple of Jesus is not seen as something artificially tacked on but as the natural outgrowth of our priorities. When the order of our relationships are awry, on the other hand, our life easily and quickly becomes embroiled in jealousy, power games, and other such behavior. One way the dying to self that paschal mystery living entails is apparent by being a servant of others; this puts title, position and wealth into perspective: all is at the service of the good of others. The new life we might experience by such living takes the form of others respecting us not because of title but because of the genuine goodness of who we are. The month of November is a time when we celebrate the Communion of Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls. In our Catholic Theology we venerate the saints as examples of holy living, as witness to the faith and as models for our time. Often we tend to remove these women and men from the challenges of their own time; however, we must be conscious of the fact that they too were challenged to make choices in their lives and we remember them for the lifegiving choices that they have made. Our Church has consistently taught that our veneration of the saints is not the same as our worship of the Triune God, especially in the Sacraments of the Church and most notably the Holy Eucharist. Adoration (latria in the latin) is reserved for our adoration of God. The intercessory prayer or veneration of the saints differs from our worship of God who is not contained in human form or matter. It is in this context that we are also called to pray for the Holy Souls. It is an
important distinction for us to remember that we need to pray for those who have died that they may one day receive their eternal reward in the Kingdom of Heaven. This belief distinguishes Roman Catholics from other Christians. That is why we offer mass intentions when we celebrate Eucharist. Many thanks to all those who were involved in this year’s Halloween Halls. There were a lot of smiling children racing through our parish buildings. Last weekend we welcomed those families who have buried a loved one in the past year. This Mass of Remembrance is one way in which we support these families in their time of grief. I am grateful to those who serve in our parish Lazarus Ministry. These ministries are another way in which we reach out to our parishioners in their time of need with support that is rooted in our Catholic Faith. This weekend we are hosting a Liturgical Ministry Fair. It is a time for our parishioners to discern how you might share your time and talent in support of our communal prayer. The Sacred Liturgy is the responsibility of the whole parish community. Each of us is called to support these liturgical acts of prayer as we offer our very best to God. Thank you for prayerfully discerning how you and your family might serve our parish community. This weekend is also the time when we will prayerfully discern our financial support for our parish. Stewardship of Treasure is something very personal. We have mailed an invitation to each registered parishioner household. Please take the time to review your giving top our parish and take a step toward increasing support for our parish and all that we offer. More to come. Have a great week.
