Requiem Mass A Requiem Mass is offered for the repose of the soul(s) of one of more deceased persons. Also known as a Mass for the Dead, the Mass gets this name from the Latin text of the entrance antiphon, Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, (grant them eternal rest, O Lord) and it is most familiar in the form of a Mass of Christian Burial, or funeral Mass, but may also be celebrated on anniversaries of an individual’s death, or for an occasion such as All Souls’ Day, in which we pray the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed. The proper texts from the requiem Mass have often been used as the source material for composers to write musical settings. Famous requiems include those by W.A. Mozart, Gabriel Fauré, even Andrew Lloyd Webber; and these musical settings are mostly used outside of Mass in a concert setting, although they could be used (if stylistically appropriate and realistically accomplished) in a liturgical setting as well. I, for example, have sung the Fauré Requiem in both a concert setting and at an All Souls Mass. In recent years, the welcomed addition of several choices of readings to be used at a funeral Mass, the selection of different music to replace the propers has also come into practice. This is somewhat unfortunate as these are some beautiful texts set to some beautiful melodies. It has since become our custom here to re-introduce the communion proper, “Let perpetual light shine upon them O Lord” and the In paradisum (may the angels lead you to paradise), although not in its intended place -- we will get there in time. This is not to say that other music does not belong at a funeral Mass, but it is important that we keep hundreds of years of tradition alive (no pun intended) as well.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. Most of us don’t have to be so creative or go to the extreme of climbing a tree to encounter Jesus. However, this gospel forewarns us that we ought not be complacent in our spiritual lives. We go to Mass every Sunday and encounter Jesus; we might think this is sufficient. Zacchaeus reminds us that we must also always be willing to change and grow, be vigilant about our relationships with others, for these are barometers of our relationship with God. Creativity in seeking Jesus might mean that we are innovative in our personal prayer life rather than continually reciting the prayers we might have learned long ago. What prayers might better meet our spiritual needs now so that we can grow in our relationships? It might mean that we keep certain days of the year (perhaps the days of the Triduum or some days during Advent) as a “mini-retreat” in order to diligently seek Jesus and a better relationship with him. It might mean that we don’t wait for people to come to us and ask for help but that we notice others’ needs and offer to help before they ask. In these and countless other ways we encounter Jesus-and in this salvation comes to our house, too. Thanks to those who helped to prepare the Saints/Superheroes & Halloween Halls event last weekend. It was wonderful to see the children all dressed up in their costumes and enjoy the energy they bring. This event is a reminder to us of our Church’s teaching regarding the place of the Communion of Saints in our Catholic Theology. It is a beautiful image to encourage all disciples of Jesus to become someone “extraordinary” in making a difference. As Roman Catholics we pray for all of the “Holy Souls” as a reminder of the consistent teaching of the Church regarding
purgation, not as a penalty, but rather as something that flows from Christian Maturity. Let us pray for all those who have gone before us and for those who await the fullness of the Kingdom of God promised us in the Sacraments. The mass of commemoration was a special opportunity for us to minister to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. It was also an opportunity for us to prayerfully reflect on our Church’s teaching on the Communion of Saints. Thanks to all those who serve in the Lazarus and Bereavement Ministries. The Month of November is the Month of All Saints and All Souls. I encourage you to come and pray in a special way for all of our beloved deceased. May the saints present, past and future continue to inspire all people to choose the path of conversion so as to achieve the crown of victory over sin and death. This week we will have the awesome privilege and responsibility to VOTE. As Americans we sometimes take this for granted. I encourage you to be informed about the issues and the candidates. Cast your votes based on these issues and the available information concerning the candidates’ record of voting. This is a real moral obligation for us. It is not enough to blindly cast your votes without any information, knowledge or responsibility. Review the sample ballot, learn about the candidates and their position on the issues. This is our opportunity to affirm and thank those who are working to make our society a better place. Our prayerful support is extended to those candidates for public office who may be part of our parish community. Next week we will pray in a special way for All Veterans, past and present, their families and all those who support them as part of our Veterans Day Observance. May God continue to bless you. All Communion Prep. 2nd Graders (Including Summer) Religious Education Families - Penance & Reconciliation Rehearsal and Lottery On Tuesday, November 12, at 6 pm in Church, we will be having an important meeting for all 2nd graders and their parents. This includes all of our summer students and our current students in our Tuesday classes.
Tuesday grades 1 & 2 students will not be having their normal classes that day. The 2nd graders will be receiving their First Penance on December 8 during the parish's Advent Penance & Reconciliation Service. Our meeting on November 12 is meant to prepare all of us for that day. In addition, at this meeting we will be holding our First Communion lottery. This is the mechanism we use to schedule the children for the time of their reception of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Our First Communion ceremonies for 2020 will occur on April 26th and May 3rd at the 10 am and 12 noon Masses. NOTE: Your attendance to this event is Mandatory. In order to participate in the Lottery, a parent or designated proxy must be present. If neither is present, the child will be placed in an available spot after the lottery has been concluded. “Light Up a Memory” Plans for the St. Mary Parish “Memory Tree” 12th Anniversary in December are already underway. A $10.00 donation signifies a light to honor all those we wish to remember during the Christmas season – both living and passed. His/her name will be inscribed in a special “Memory Book”, which will be on display in the Church Gathering Space. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a lovely card to send to the family of the deceased or to the honoree. The deadline for forms is Dec. 3, 2019. All contributions will benefit improvements at the Parish of St. Mary.
