The Solemnity of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI with the encyclical Quas primas (in the first). Key elements of faith that we celebrate today include: Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, the Incarnate Lord. His kingship is founded upon the ineffable hypostatic union…Christ has power over all creatures. (Quas primas, 13) Jesus is fully God and fully man. He is both the divine Lord and the man who suffered and died on the Cross. In him, one person of the Trinity unites himself to human nature through the Incarnation and reigns over all creation as the Incarnate Son of God. Jesus shares a law of charity to show the way to communion with God. Those who keep them show their love for their Divine Master, and he promises that they shall remain in his love. (Quas primas, 14) By being close to sisters and brothers who are suffering, we draw close to Jesus. The Church acknowledges the reign of Christ, not only privately, but publicly. Thus by sermons preached at meetings and in churches, by public adoration of the Blessed Sacrament exposed and by solemn processions, men unite in paying homage to Christ, whom God has given them for their King. (Quas primas, 26) For Christians, when our faith is repeatedly marginalized in public life, we can fall into the habit of compartmentalizing our lives. We love Jesus in our private lives, but we shrink from acknowledging the kingship of Christ in social life. When we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, we declare to the world and remind ourselves that Jesus is the Lord, not only of the Church, but of the universe. ©2020 USCCB

Saint of the Week: St. Gertrude the Great Religious Gertrude was born on January 6, 1256, at or near Eisleben, Germany, and she entered the Benedictine Convent of Helfta at the age of five. There, she came under the care and influence of the abbess, also named Gertrude, and her sister, Mechtilde. Under the guardianship of these two saints, Gertrude soon learned to speak and read Latin and developed a liking for the study of philosophy from the texts in that language. In about 1282, Gertrude experienced the first of a series of visions of Christ which would continue for the remainder of her life. Gertrude began to write of her visions and these writings spread throughout Europe where her reputation as a theologian developed and grew over the next several centuries. While this saint was especially learned, it was not until she was about twentysix that she chose the field and ministry that was to lead to sainthood.

Penance & Reconciliation Rehearsal & Retreat is a two day mandatory event for all 2nd graders from the summer and fall 2021 RE program. It will take place in the church at either 5pm or 6pm the 23rd & 30th of November. Please RSVP here with the time you will attend on each day. We ask that at least one parent be present with the child.

Men’s Morning Office The Thursday Men’s Morning Office has been meeting since 1981 when it was formed by now Pastor Emeritus William J. Bausch. As of September 2021, we have about 20 men meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am in the Chapel for prayer. We usually conclude our prayer service by 7:30 am, and then enjoy some coffee, donuts & camaraderie for 15-20 minutes before all are on their way. With an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+, we welcome any men in the Parish or cohort to come join us any Thursday morning for prayer & fellowship! Please join us on Wednesday, December 8th Our Pastor, Fr. Jeffrey E. Lee, is known for his inspiring homilies and the Martha Mary Guild is in for a treat on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021. Fr. Jeff has the unique gift of keeping the interest of his audience and educating them at the same time. At this meeting, Father will help us to understand the 16th Ordinary Synod of Bishops - "A Call to Communion, Participation & Mission". To quote, Fr. Jeff: "His Holiness, Pope Francis, has issued a call to the whole church in every corner and on every continent to become engaged in this process of Listening, Hope-filled Prayer & Deliberation. It is customary at the conclusion for His Holiness to issue a written statement, usually an 'Apostolic Exhortation'. This statement can be a vision statement for the way forward." Meredith Geneve will help us "get into the Christmas spirit" by leading us in a medley of Christmas songs - which is always fun! Special treats will be offered, keeping our COVID restrictions in mind. In keeping with our tradition of many years, we will be collecting all kinds of baby items for Birthright. Our generous members always donate a wonderful assortment of baby clothes, diapers, blankets and various other baby items. It is heartwarming to know that many new mothers will be thrilled with our gifts. We are looking forward to welcoming many members and guests from our Cohort parishes at 11:30 a.m. for the rosary, followed by BYOB (Bring Your Own Lunch) at noon. Fr. Jeff will speak right after lunch and then we will have our "Sing-a-long".

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ the King. Self-giving service is a small price to pay for our share in this eternal glory. Living the paschal mystery means that we don’t count the cost but always find strength, hope, encouragement in the glimpse of final victory that we are repeatedly given throughout the liturgical year. Living the paschal mystery means that we see the victorious Christ even in the everyday trials and difficulties that we face. Living the paschal mystery means that we are ever faithful to the rhythm of dying and rising as it unfolds every day—in our prayer, work, leisure. Living the paschal mystery means that we are “priests” (that is, mediators) for those whom we meet—that we are the body of Christ leading others to holier lives and happier commitment. If someone should then ask us, "“What have you done?” (see gospel) our answer would come quickly and surely—we have served our King. As we conclude this Month of All Saints and All Souls, I take this opportunity to thank those involved in our Parish Consolation Ministry: Lazarus Ministry and Bereavement Ministry. Next weekend we begin the Season of Advent. This marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. The Lectionary Cycle of scripture readings for Sundays and Solemnities will be taken from Cycle C and the weekday readings from Year I. Many thanks to all of our parish volunteers who have assisted us in preparing our parish community for a new liturgical year beginning with Advent. Please join us Tuesday Evening for the Colts Neck Ecumenical Prayer Service held this year at Saint Mary Parish. This is an important visible witness of the Christian Com-

munity coming together to offer thanks and praise to God for the many blessings of the past year. Our homilist will be Pastor Gene Ryan of Colts Neck Reformed Church. There will be a combined choir with representatives from both churches. Thursday morning, Thanksgiving Day, the Parish of Saint Mary will gather for the Eucharist giving thanks to God for the many and varied blessings and especially for the gift of Religious Freedom that is so much a part of the bounty which we receive. Come and join us on this civic holiday by witnessing to our faith with family and friends and receiving Holy Communion. The Advent Penance & Reconciliation (Confessions) will be held Sunday, 5 December 2021 beginning at 3:00pm. Please consult the bulletin for additional details. We are suggesting a scheduled time for family names beginning with a specific letter. This is for your convenience and to minimize wait times. Thank you for your kind cooperation. I am grateful for the feedback and questions regarding our Annual Stewardship Report. It is an important way for us to be accountable to our parishioners and benefactors. Thank you for your continued stewardship so that we can care for our parishioners needs and keep our facilities up to date and safe for all. The Tree of Love will be making its debut earlier this year on the weekend of November 13-14, to allow extra time to shop for gifts. Some groups are continuing with gift cards this year due to volunteer shortages / Covid concerns but there will be tags on the tree for children's toys and gifts for nursing home residents. As in the past, please take a tag from the tree, fulfill the request ($25 value) and return the gift with tag attached no later than December 5th. Thank you for your generosity towards those in need. “Light Up a Memory” Preparations for the "Memory Tree" lighting this year have already started. A $10.00 contribution signifies a light in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of a living person. His/her name will be inscribed in a special "Memory book", which will be on display in the Church Narthex. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a lovely card to send to the recipient or the family of a deceased honoree.

The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2021. Submissions after deadline are included in the addendum of the Memory Book. Participants are also invited to the joyous tree lighting ceremony, with music by our Magnificat Choir at the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday, December 11, 2021.

Christmas Sponsor-A-Family Purchase gifts for a family. You select the size of the family you wish to sponsor (2-6 people). Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family.
