Early cultures such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans had periodic feasts and festivals which paid tribute to their gods after a bountiful harvest. The Jewish holiday of Sukkot, commonly known as the “Feast of Gathering” or “Feast of Tabernacles” is a week-long celebration in late September / early October, which marked the end of harvest time and also serves to remind the Jewish of the Israelite’s Exodus from Egypt, and their reliance on God for their journey, and to give thanks to the Lord for his goodness. The Native Americans also celebrated harvest time, and both the Separatist and Puritan settlers brought traditions of fasting in times of tribulation or penitence and feasting in times of abundance to give thanks to God. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in US Catholic churches, with its own selection of readings and propers. Many towns often hold ecumenical services and other interfaith gatherings where differences in belief systems are put aside, and we celebrate our commonalities. In 2020, for obvious reasons, we have suspended our usual gathering with our neighbors, the Colts Neck Reformed Church, but have remained in contact with them and hope to gather again next year.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Please arrive earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks, Hand Sanitizer, and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the
Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side. Remove mask (and gloves) as you approach the Eucharist; put mask back in place as you return to your pew Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday). We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms, etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass. NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. As we continue our journey through these final days of the liturgical year, the scriptures remind us of our responsibility as Catholic Christians to act in life-giving and accountable ways. None of us likes to think about the end of times or the final judgment. However, we need to develop a certain consciousness about these matters. When we make decisions we ought not to be so carefree that we radiate a sense of unbridled carefreeness that children and others who look to us might perceive the wrong attitudes about our view of what is right and what is wrong? These last days are also an opportunity for us to take a type of spiritual inventory of our lives as we ready ourselves for the image rich tranquil season of advent. November calls us to prayerfully reflect on our belief in the resurrection as we honor all of the Saints and we pray for the repose of all the holy souls. Bereavement and grieving is a necessary part of our parish ministry. I encourage you to pray for all those whose names are entered into our parish book of remembrance. November is also a time for us to be thankful for all the many blessings that we have received. We are a blessed people…no doubt about that. How do we make a return to the Lord for these blessings? We are collecting non-perishable food items to be distributed throughout the year. Please read the contents of the bulletin for items needed as well as for when turkeys might be received and processed for distribution. Together we can help to make a difference. This year we will not be joining with the Colts Neck Reformed Community for the Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service due to Covid 19 restrictions. Mass will be celebrated on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00am in the Church. Come and begin your family’s observance of Thanksgiving by giving thanks to God first.
Please join us this coming Saturday, 21 November 2020 for the Annual Fall Clean Up of our property. This is a great way to meet some other parishioners, give service, and help us to maintain these 25 beautiful acres. There is something for every age to do. Come with your gloves, rakes, etc…. The Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King of the Universe is quickly approaching…next Sunday. This marks the conclusion of the Church’s Liturgical Year. The First Sunday of Advent is 29 November 2020. It is the beginning of the Church’s New Liturgical Year. Our Sunday Readings will be taken from Cycle B; Weekday Readings will be taken from Year I. Congratulations to all those who have been elected for public service. Let us keep them in our prayer as they strive to serve the needs of all their constituents. Let us pray for the end of civil discord during this time of transition and uncertainty. Please note your personal schedules for the Advent Confessions (no service) with 10 or so priests available on Sunday, 6 December at 3:00pm. At this time we will welcome our young people as they Celebrate First Penance & Reconciliation with their family members and our parishioners. I encourage all of our parishioners to come and receive God’s Grace in this sacrament and to support our young people in their journey of faith. I am grateful to all those who have prayerfully considered the Offertory Recovery Program. We are blessed to have the sage council of our Parish Trustees, Finance Council and Pastoral Council Members as well as our Parish Staff. Many thanks to all for your words of encouragement and completing the cards sent to you so that we can plan our future together. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy

Martha Mary November Meeting Angela Juffey - Master Gardener Angela Juffey will share one of her many talents with the Martha Mary Guild at the next General Meeting on Nov. 18, 2020. (Please note that the meeting is postponed to the 3rd Wed., due to Veterans’ Day.) Besides being a former Middle School teacher, a beekeeper, an active member of the Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center, and a jewelry maker, Angela is a Master Gardener who creates terrariums. Her presentation “Terrariums: Gardens in Glass” will help us to face winter by looking indoors for the beauty of nature. “Various types of harmonizing plants will be exhibited, along with tips and tricks to make your terrarium truly unique.” We will learn about open and closed terrariums that will serve as a “breath of fresh air” for all of us! We will take every precaution for “Covid Awareness”, by spacious seating arrangements, wearing masks and abstaining from refreshments for this meeting. Join us in Madonna Hall at noon if you want to bring your lunch. Angela will start her interesting program at 12:30. We will be praying the rosary in the chapel meeting room at 11:30 a.m.

Your contribution will be used for turkeys or additional canned goods if needed. The Tree of Love will be in the NarthexGathering Space beginning on November 20th. Due to COVID restrictions, we will not be having individual ornaments on the tree this year or collecting toys as we have in past years. Many of the organizations we work with are not able to collect, sort and distribute physical gifts. Instead, gift cards are requested which will be distributed directly to families. In order to provide the assistance we normally offer (800 gifts), we are asking that parishioners participate by purchasing gift cards or making monetary donations.
