Giving Thanks The origins of our Thanksgiving holiday can be traced back to long before the “first Thanksgiving”. Early cultures such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans had periodic feasts and festivals which paid tribute to their gods after a bountiful harvest.
The Jewish holiday of Sukkot, commonly known as the “Feast of Gathering” or “Feast of Tabernacles” is a week-long celebration in late September / early October, which marked the end of harvest time and also serves to remind the Jewish of the Israelite’s Exodus from Egypt, and their reliance on God for their journey, and to give thanks to the Lord for his goodness. The Native Americans also celebrated harvest time, and both the Separatist and Puritan settlers brought traditions of fasting in times of tribulation or penitence and feasting in times of abundance to give thanks to God. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in US Catholic churches, with its own selection of readings and propers. Many towns often hold ecumenical services and other interfaith gatherings where differences in belief systems are put aside, and we celebrate our commonalities. In our community, we partner annually with the Colts Neck Reformed Church to come together, pray together, and give thanks to God for the blessing He has bestowed upon us.
Saint of the Week: Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini Teacher & Religious Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first citizen of the United States to be canonized as a saint. Born Maria Francesca Cabrini at San Angelo, Italy, she was naturalized as a citizen of the United States at Seattle in 1909. She joined the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, and their ministry was the Christian education of girls. In 1889, Pope Leo XIII asked Frances to sail to the United States to work among the Italian immigrants. Within three months of their arrival, Mother Cabrini had already founded an orphanage and a school. In the thirty-five years before her death, she was to open sixty-seven hospitals, schools, orphanages, convents, and other foundations in the United States, Central America, and South America. Simbang Gabi is the Filipino custom of offering a nightly Mass each day for nine nights preceding Christmas Day to help the faithful prepare themselves for the joyous, yet solemn, celebration of the birth of our Lord. The novena of Masses, which signifies the nine months our Lord was in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, has become a beloved tradition and devotion to the Blessed Mother since the 1600s in the Philippines. Here in Monmouth County, and in every county that is covered by the Diocese of Trenton, an organizing committee is formed to ensure that all the faithful throughout the Diocese are given an opportunity to pray this novena. All are welcome to attend and participate in our county’s Simbang Gabi. The Rosary will be prayed and confessions will be heard before every Mass. Please refer to the schedule for a complete listing of the dates, times, and venues of the Simbang Gabi in Monmouth County. And please observe the health and safety protocols that are in place in parishes that are hosting the Simbang Gabi.

Penance & Reconciliation Rehearsal & Retreat is a two day mandatory event for all 2nd graders from the summer and fall 2021 RE program. It will take place in the church at either 5pm or 6pm the 23rd & 30th of November. Please RSVP here with the time you will attend on each day. We ask that at least one parent be present with the child.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. On this second-to-last Sunday of the liturgical year we begin to play out the last climactic rhythm of the paschal mystery. This Sunday we consider the end of this world as we know it—dying. Next Sunday we consider the triumph of Christ and what comes to all of us who live in conformity with the Word—everlasting life. Dying and rising. This is what the whole liturgical year is about. This is what the whole Christian mystery is about. There’s lot at stake in this gospel—it’s not a future for our progeny but for ourselves. We have been faced with a choice throughout our journey during this past liturgical year: to be rooted in this world or in the words of Jesus. Our choices do make a difference. Next weekend the Universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King, the final weekend of our liturgical year. I am very grateful to all those who assist in preparing our Worship. The Sacred Liturgy is the most important part of parish life. It is our fundamental experience of Christ in the Eucharist that gives purpose to every other aspect of our common life as a parish. This precious gift of God which we have in the Eucharist enables us to work for justice in our world and to be instruments of mercy and forgiveness. We will need to call forth additional parishioners to serve as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion as well as Altar Servers. These ministries are a tremendous service to our parish. Let us pray that more parishioners will prayerfully discern this participation and that more parents will responsibly support their children in learning more about becoming altar servers.
Many thanks to all those who have participated in our Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Poor & Needy. Our parish response continues to grow each year. May we strive to see the face of Jesus in all, especially the poor and needy.
Participation in our Fall Clean up (Saturday, 20 November beginning at 9:00am) is necessary in order to help manage our 25 acre campus that is our spiritual home. The details are outlined in the bulletin. Many hands make lighter work. Our parish will be hosting this year’s Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service on Tuesday Evening, 23 November at 7:30pm. Rev. Gene Ryan of Colts Neck Reformed Church will be the homilist. Please join us for Mass on Thanksgiving Day at 9am. It is important for us to take time to give thanks and praise to God for all the blessings in our life. Please consult the bulletin for details Please mark your calendars for Sunday, 5 December 2021. This is the date for the Advent Penance & Reconciliation (confessions). It is a time when we will welcome a new group of children to this sacrament. It is also a time for us to come together in preparation for the great Solemnity of Christmas. I am grateful to all of the priests who serve as confessors for this sacrament. During these days please allow some extra time when driving around town, especially the weekends, as some businesses experience high traffic and a swell of patrons. The Tree of Love will be making its debut earlier this year on the weekend of November 13-14, to allow extra time to shop for gifts. Some groups are continuing with gift cards this year due to volunteer shortages / Covid concerns but there will be tags on the tree for children's toys and gifts for nursing home residents. As in the past, please take a tag from the tree, fulfill the request ($25 value) and return the gift with tag attached no later than December 5th. Thank you for your generosity towards those in need. “Light Up a Memory” Preparations for the "Memory Tree" lighting this year have already started. A $10.00 contribution signifies a light in memory of a deceased loved one, or in honor of a living person. His/her name will be inscribed in a special "Memory book", which will be on display in the Church Narthex. Each $10.00 also entitles the donor to a lovely card to send to the recipient or the family of a deceased honoree.
The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2021. Submissions after deadline are included in the addendum of the Memory Book. Participants are also invited to the joyous tree lighting ceremony, with music by our Magnificat Choir at the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday, December 11, 2021.
