After a vigil service, worshipers would visit a cemetery and light candles or lay flowers in anticipation of the coming days. In some cultures, there was a belief that on this evening, the veil between the living and the dead was weak, and people would don masks and costumes so that a departed soul would not recognize them, hence the beginnings of trick-or-treating. All Saints’ Day The Solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation, is the day when the church celebrates all the Saints and Martyrs, including those unknown, and honors the Church Triumphant (saints and others who have entered the Kingdom of Heaven)
The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Commonly known as All Souls’ Day, The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed is a Roman Catholic feast, in which the living faithful pray for the faithful departed who have not yet attained their heavenly reward, as their souls are purified in purgatory. Many churches, including our own, hold Mass on this day, in memory of those who have died in the past year, and it is customary to visit the graves of loved ones following Mass, and to pray for the happy repose of their souls.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Matthew 5:3-5

We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms, etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass. NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. At first glance the Beatitudes seem an impossible blueprint for Christian living and expression of our baptismal commitment; most of us are not near at all to the ideal that they express. But nine times is the word “blessed” addressed to us. When our blessedness is our focus, then fidelity to our baptismal commitment is no ideal, but becomes a way of expressing who we are in Christ-Blessed. November is upon us. This weekend we set our clocks one hour back. Don’t forget! This month is also a time when we prayerfully reflect on the Communion of Saints and their importance in our Christian spirituality and our catholic liturgy. We also pray for the holy souls who have gone before us throughout this month. Your intentions, listed on the All Souls envelope, are placed at the altar during this month. This weekend we welcome those families of our parish who have buried a loved one during the past year. The ritual has been slightly modified in compliance with the Covid 19 guidelines. It is an opportunity for us to support those parishioners who have experienced the death of a loved one during this past year. Many thanks to our parish Lazarus and Bereavement Ministries.
This weekend we will celebrate the Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) during the 12 noon Mass. Let us continue to support those who make a conscious choice to become a Roman Catholic and live out that choice here in our parish community. Preparations are underway for those preparing for First Penance during the Season of Advent. This year we will offer confessions on that day with no prayer service. We anticipate a number of priests to assist us in serving you. Additionally, we will encourage participants to arrive at various times alphabetically arranged by the first letter of the family last name. This will assist us in providing a prayerful opportunity while managing the number of persons in the church. More information to come in the coming weeks. The Thanksgiving Food Drive is soon upon us. Consult these communications for additional details. Many thanks to all those who regularly support our Food Collection that we now share with our co-hort parish of Saint Catharine in Holmdel. Martha Mary November Meeting Angela Juffey - Master Gardener Angela Juffey will share one of her many talents with the Martha Mary Guild at the next General Meeting on Nov. 18, 2020. (Please note that the meeting is postponed to the 3rd Wed., due to Veterans’ Day.) Besides being a former Middle School teacher, a beekeeper, an active member of the Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center, and a jewelry maker, Angela is a Master Gardener who creates terrariums. Her presentation “Terrariums: Gardens in Glass” will help us to face winter by looking indoors for the beauty of nature. “Various types of harmonizing plants will be exhibited, along with tips and tricks to make your terrarium truly unique.” We will learn about open and closed terrariums that will serve as a “breath of fresh air” for all of us! We will take every precaution for “Covid Awareness”, by spacious seating arrangements, wearing masks and abstaining from refreshments for this meeting. Join us in Madonna Hall at noon if you want to bring your lunch. Angela will start her interesting program at 12:30. We will be praying the rosary in the chapel meeting room at 11:30 a.m.
Every year, Saint Mary Parish parishioners generously provide donations for Thanksgiving Baskets for over 200 area families who are in need in the Monmouth County area.
