Ascension Thursday and Pentecost - Why are they where they are? The Solemnity of the Ascension, traditionally celebrated 40 days after Easter, is as such to make symmetry with the 40 days of Lent that precede the Sacred Paschal Triduum. The Solemnity of Pentecost, which occurs on the 50th day after Easter, allows for a novena (9 days of prayer) to be observed between the two celebrations. It also makes the Vigil of Pentecost occurring “Seven Times Seven” days after Easter. At least, that is what we are used to. In the United States, the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia observe Ascension Thursday as a Holy Day of Obligation. This includes: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. In all other US provinces, the Solemnity is transferred to and replaces the 7th Sunday of Easter. While this may allow a greater convenience to the faithful, especially in those areas of the country where priests are at an even greater shortage and parishes are many miles apart, the symbolism of the numbers falls to the wayside, as do the readings for the 7th Sunday of Easter. This year, due to the pandemic, the Archdiocese of Newark has moved the Ascension to today, replacing the 7th Sunday of Easter.

There is no higher purpose than being kind. As Founder of S.A.C.K. (Supporting a Community with Kindness), I want to thank at St. Mary’s Church for sponsoring a soap drive and all those who donated soap for my nonprofit organization as well as the knitters and crocheters who made and donated sacks. I am appreciative beyond words! Your church collected 571 bars of soap!!!!!! What an extraordinary contribution! Your generous support will help us to continue in our mission of helping those in need, one sack at a time. Since I started S.A.C.K. in 2017, over 140,000 soap sacks have been distributed globally by volunteers throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Asia and Europe. The response to these donations has been overwhelming positive, especially since people cannot use government subsidies such as food stamps to purchase essential items like soap. The soap is placed in knitted/crocheted sacks which can be used as a washcloth as well as to store soap. By donating soap sacks to homeless shelters, food pantries, veterans clinics and social service agencies, we are providing a sense of dignity and compassion to the underserved communities. On Monday, May 31, the Township of Colts Neck will commemorate Memorial Day with its annual Memorial Day Parade and following Ceremony at Memorial Park. The parade and ceremony combines as one of the highlights of the year, when our Colts Neck Community gathers to pay tribute to those military personals who died while on active duty. The parade begins at 10:30 am at Township Hall, 124 Cedar Drive and concludes at Memorial Park, 242 Heyers Mill Road. There will be opportunities for youngsters to march with Colts Neck Sport Foundation teams along with other township sports organizations as well as the Daisey’s, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts or ride on a decorated bicycle after the decorated bicycle contest held at Town Hall at 10:00 am See you there!

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate The Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This year, the Solemnity has been transferred from Thursday to Sunday. It is a central teaching of our Church. That is Jesus was taken up into heaven and is seated at the right of God. It is from this return to heaven that the Holy Spirit is sent upon the apostles and their successors who serve our church. The lectionary readings for the Seventh Sunday of Easter should not be lost this year. The first reading gives us one instance of how Jesus keeps, protects, and guards us. Peter announces to the gathered disciples that “it is necessary” that Judas be replaced as one of the Twelve. Necessary. This suggests that there is more to the Twelve than leadership and mission. After all, Matthias could have been leader of a Christian community and carried on Jesus’ mission without being chosen by lot to be numbered among the Twelve—countless men and women have done so since that time, including ourselves. The action is symbolic—the Lord’s disciples must be “complete”—bringing the number back to twelve suggests that the new Israel will be whole, kept, guarded, protected and able to fruitfully carry forth Jesus’ mission. The second reading gives us another instance—Jesus sent the Spirit to be with us to ensure that we remain in him. Our own lives witness to other instances of how Jesus keeps, protects, and guards us—when we have those moments of inspiration, when we know exactly what to do in a tough situation, when we are tired yet choose to lend a helping hand and this action brings a radiant smile, when we are lost for comforting words and then they just seem to flow from us.
These are times when we know Jesus is still praying for us. All of the confidence and protection Jesus promises in his prayer rests on our surrendering to Jesus’ discipleship—we must speak words of truth to a world that may or may not receive our words. John’s “world” is everything that is opposed to Jesus—yet God clearly loves the world because the Son was sent to redeem the world. We may die because of the hatred the world has for the truth; but what life we find in God’s love. As we reflect on the mystery or the Ascension of Jesus Christ, we are reassured that God provides for the Church even in our time. Next weekend the Church observes the Solemnity of Pentecost which concludes the Liturgical Season of Easter (50 days). The Concluding Rites of the Mass specify that we intone the dismissal with the double alleluia as a reminder that Pentecost concludes the Easter Season. Just a reminder…wear something RED next weekend when coming to church! This will assist us in “decorating our place of worship” for this great solemnity. We will provide an accounting of the 2021 Easter Collection. Next weekend, Memorial Day, we celebrate the lives of those women and men who have given their lives in service to our country and the freedom that we enjoy. We will have an abbreviated Mass Schedule on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend as has been our custom Mass in our parish will be celebrated in the Church building at 9:00am on Monday, 24th, in observance of the Memorial Day civic holiday. The Colts Neck Parade is on this year. It is a great tradition…. Hope to see you there. This weekend, 16 May, I celebrate the 29th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination, year 30 has begun. The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is transferred from Thursday, May 13, 2021 to Sunday, May 16, 2021, replacing the Seventh Sunday of Easter. This change is only for the present year and will be evaluated at a provincial meeting. This includes the transfer of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord for both Saturday Vigil Mass, Sunday Masses of the Day and the Liturgy of Hours. The celebration of Mass in the Extraordinary Form will observe the liturgical calendar proper to that form.
Pope to launch 30-day Rosary relay led by 30 shrines, for end of pandemic The Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization announced that the pope will launch on May 1 a 30-day Rosary relay. Thirty shrines spread around the world will take turns leading the Rosary, for the intention of the end of the pandemic. Vatican news channels will broadcast the Rosary each day at 6 pm, Rome time (12 noon EST).
