Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain. All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org During Lent, you may notice a much more reserved use of the organ. There are no preludes or postludes. The organ is played quietly to medium volume at most, as the sole purpose is to support the congregational singing and not to add any musical embellishments. The organ makes its triumphant return to full glory during the Gloria at the Easter Vigil. There are also no reeds or mixtures used, and if an organ contains any percussive sounds, like chimes or a zimbelstern, they are also not used. What are those? A quick lesson on different types of pipes found in an organ. • Principals and Flutes - Rounded or square pipes made of wood, tin, or other metals; the most common and plentiful pipe, produces the foundation of the organ sound. • Reeds - These stops imitate the sounds of the instrument assigned to them. They are fashioned to sound like a clarinet, a trumpet, a horn, etc… • Mixtures - Similar to the principals, although these use several different pipes to produce a pitch, resulting in rich overtones and a crystalline or piercing sound, depending on the intended function and coupling with other stops. (Keep in mind that in our parish, we do not have a pipe organ. We have a circa 1991 electronic organ which only approximates the sounds produced by a pipe organ. Recently, I have engaged the use of some sampling software on my laptop to get the instrument sounding more like its “breathing” counterparts) So, as you can see from the list above, during Lent the organist will only utilize about 1/3 to 1/2 of the organ’s potential. This is to create a more contemplative atmosphere for musical prayer and to also make a marked shift in the liturgy as do the readings and the music chosen. As such, Lent is also a great time to hone your singing skills! There are not nearly as many Lenten hymns as there are, say, Christmas carols, so you will notice some repetition of hymns during the weeks of Lent.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. Former astronauts commented about how the excitement of going into space dwarfed the fear of danger, but the fear was there nonetheless. This is the risk of venturing forth. Jesus commands the disciples to “Rise, and do not be afraid.” The journey of discipleship has its dangers (temptations/ridicule), but we still venture forth on the journey to eternal glory. We trust in God’s guidance (given through Law, prophets, teachings of Jesus, gospel living modeled by others) and surrender ourselves into God’s hands. All we need do is listen. Listening to God can come through the readings and homily on Sunday. It can come through our own practice of taking some time every day to read God’s word in Scripture. It might come through the guidance we seek in spiritual direction. There are many ways God makes known the divine will for us. Listening means all these things but, most importantly, it means that we keep our eyes focused on the vision of Jesus transfigured and know that God, in great love and divine mercy, intends that we share in that same glory. We cannot lose sight of Jesus himself. As we continue our journey through this Season of Lent consider participating in daily Mass in our parish. This is an awesome way to deepen our prayer life and get to know other parishioners. Remember in your prayer, those who are preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation this year. This is a special time of grace for all of those who are discerning full communion with the
Roman Catholic Church within our particular parish. In the coming weeks we will be inviting parishioners to take on various roles in the celebrations of Holy Week, The Paschal Triduum, and Easter. Please be generous in responding yes to these invitations. Our community prayer is the responsibility of all of us. We are so blessed to be a community that is welcoming and prayerful. Let us continue to build upon these aspects of our life together so that we might continue to welcome new members as well as those who are returning to our community. Last weekend we provided a parish wide opportunity on Sunday in the Church for parishioners and guests to come and spend some time before the Most Blessed Sacrament. I am grateful to all those who helped to prepare the day, those who served as guardians throughout the day and all who participated. It is a beautiful custom of our Catholic Church to enrich our spiritual lives. It is my hope to provide these opportunities on a Sunday afternoon throughout the year. Thank you for your feedback and comments as we kick off the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal. It is so very important that each of us participates as our means allow. It is one of the ways we can support His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton as he guides us in our journey of faith. Although it w as not included on the 2nd grade calendar, it was included in an email that went out in the fall. The Retreat has been rescheduled from March 8 to March 22. At the retreat, which should include the child and at least one parent, you will receive a banner kit for creating a banner with your child. This banner will be hung in the Church during the Mass at which they receive their First Communion. We will also present a review for the children on the meaning and significance of the Sacrament. They will also have their first practice for actually receiving the host. Unconsecrated hosts will be distributed. We have a professional photographer present for the First Communion ceremonies. He will also be present at the retreat, hopefully with samples of his work.

Francis Lomeo, RGS, Sisters of Good Shepherd We are now into the liturgical season of Lent and the Martha Mary Guild of St. Mary’s is looking forward to the March meeting, when Sr. Fran will guide us in a prayerful day of reflection. Sr. M. Francis Lomeo RGS, a Sister of Good Shepherd, is a certified Spiritual Director at the Upper Room Spiritual Center in Neptune, NJ and a licensed Clinical Social Worker. Sr. Fran provides individual spiritual direction and also leads days of recollection and retreat. All women of the parish are cordially invited to participate in this inspiring Lenten day of devotion on Wednesday, March 11. The rosary will be prayed in the Spiritual Center Chapel at 11:30 a.m., followed by a BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) in Madonna Hall at noon. Sr. Fran will start our Lenten afternoon around 12:30. Sr. Fran is also connected with Collier Center and our donations this month will be books, games, bathing suits, and beach towels for the children who attend summer camp at Collier – ages 6-14.
