Musical Differences During Lent As we continue the holy penitential season of Lent, there are notable shifts in the tone of music at Mass. The two most obvious differences are: The abstaining from the Gloria and all instances of Alleluia The silence before and after Mass, and less organ in general Here are some explanations for why we do this. First, the Gloria is a hymn of praise to the Triune God, very triumphant in character and jubilant in text. As Lent is a season where the Church teaches us to focus on penitence, we omit this piece. (There are a few notable exceptions to this rule: The Solemnities of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and The Annunciation of the Lord occur during Lent, and the Gloria is sung on these days. This year the feast of the Chair of St Peter also fell during Lent and the Gloria was sung.) We also omit the Alleluia before the Gospel and all instances of the Alleluia during any hymns or chants. This rule is not suspended for feasts or solemnities. In addition, we would also refrain from singing the Te Deum or any other hymn of great joyful praise. We sing hymns and chants of penitence, pleading for mercy, etc. The Second noticeable difference is in the playing of the organ. There are no preludes or postludes during Lent, reeds and mixtures are not used, and the organ is used only to support the congregational singing. There are no extended instrumental offertories. Again, we abstain from the full joy that comes from a properly played organ, and the organist plays only what is necessary to serve the functions of the Mass. We are also continuing the practice of singing the seasonal Marian antiphon at the conclusion of weekday Mass in the chapel. During this time of year, this is the Ave Regina Caelorum.
Even though Daylight Saving Time is starting March 14th, the Saturday Anticipatory Mass remains at 4:00 pm through Palm Sunday.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. Most of us get lost in the demands of our everyday living. We get up in the morning, spend our day working, prepare and clean up after meals, shop and clean, drive the kids to soccer practice, worry about them, and do countless other things before we fall into bed at the end of the day—usually totally exhausted. In the midst of all this it is pretty difficult to be single-minded about anything except the tasks at hand. Our longest-range goals are maybe saving a little money for a much -needed vacation; sometimes that dream trip is what keeps us going. This gospel dramatically challenges us to keep doing all these everyday tasks—but for the right reason: zeal for God. Ultimately, we are to offer up the temple of our own bodies for dying and rising. This is our daily dying: not necessarily doing something different, but doing what is demanded of us out of zeal for God and the good of others. This is our daily rising: that we have kept our sight on God and have believed the signs of God’s presence to us. Last weekend I noticed a number of families returning to mass with their children. I encourage all to begin the process of returning to mass and receiving Holy Communion in the coming weeks. Keeping the Sunday Sabbath is an important part of our Catholic Christian Spirituality. The Eucharist is the greatest gift God has given to us. May the Eucharist continue to sustain us in our earthly life. Please join us for daily mass Monday through Friday in the Parish Hall Chapel. We will host our communal Lenten Confessions on Sunday, 21 March at 3:00 pm. We will follow the same
protocol as was put forth for the Advent Service. Please mark your personal schedules now and plan to participate. You should also be receiving the Holy Week and Easter Schedule in the mail. If you have not within the next two weeks or so, please contact the parish office. Make every effort to participate in the Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Services. Personal responsibility is key to continued growth in the spiritual life. While there are some adaptations that need to be made this year in order to comply with the pandemic guidelines, I am grateful that we will be able to celebrate these Sacred Rites that are so central to our identity as believers. I appreciated the feedback, questions and concerns from our parishioners last weekend. The narthex project has been in the planning stages for more than a 18 months. Phase one serves to complete the narthex gathering area, address acoustical concerns, upgrade lighting, and install an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary during the month of April. This phase one of the project is being funded by a bona fide parishioner in addition to their regular stewardship. I am grateful to all of our faithful parishioners for their prayer, service, and support of our parish. Thanks to those who have acted in a responsible manner and made their commitment to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal. We need every person to act responsibly in order to assist our diocesan bishop as he strives to pastor us and respond to the needs that exist in our four county diocese. 2021-2022 Religious Education Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the possible exception of first grader families). This includes the New Parishioner Orientation meeting. Copies of each student’s Baptismal certificate and record of previously completed Religious Education classes (if applicable) and Offered in January 2021 at registering in our program for sacraments must be received by the office when the firstMary time. the Parish of Saint Please be aware that children entering grades 2-8 in Sept 2021 must have completed and passed their previous Religious Education grade work before they can be registered for the next school year. Additionally registration/class enrollment will not be processed until all paperwork is in the office. Returning Students who do not have a copy of their Baptismal Certificate on file in the office WILL NOT be secured in a class for the 2021 - 2022 term.
