Palm Sunday The Commemoration of the Lord’s Triumphal Entry in Jerusalem, commonly known as Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday recounts Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, his trial and crucifixion. We carry palm branches as a remembrance of people doing the same when Jesus rode into Jerusalem. Palms in ancient times, specifically date palms in the Holy Land, are majestic trees, growing anywhere from 15 to 50 feet tall, their height and dense branches granting them a symbol that had become synonymous with royalty. Palm fronds have been blessed and distributed on this day since about the 9th century. Some follow the custom of making a cross out of palms to be displayed in the home throughout Holy Week and the Easter Season. As the palms are blessed, they cannot be thrown away; they must be buried or burned. It is customary for churches to collect palms from the previous year and use them in the creation of Ashes for Ash Wednesday, or to be burned in the Easter Fire.

7:30 p.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine CoCathedral, Freehold. During this Mass, all of the priests of the Diocese who are gathered publicly renew their commitment to their priestly service. The Chrism Mass is also when the Bishop blesses the oils to be used in parishes throughout the coming year. Due to pandemic restrictions, attendance will be limited to concelebrating priests. Holy Thursday, April 1, the Bishop will celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7 p.m. in St. David the King Church, Princeton Junction. Good Friday, April 2, Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion at noon in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. This is the only day during the year when Mass is not celebrated. 2021-2022 Religious Education Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the possible exception of first grader families). This includes the New Parishioner Orientation meeting. Copies of each student’s Baptismal certificate and record of previously completed Religious Education classes (if applicable) and sacraments must be received by the office when registering in our program for the first time. Please be aware that children entering grades 2-8 in Sept 2021 must have completed and passed their previous Religious Education grade work before they can be registered for the next school year. Additionally registration/class enrollment will not be processed until all paperwork is in the office. Returning Students who do not have a copy of their Baptismal Certificate on file in the office WILL NOT be secured in a class for the 2021 - 2022 term.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion and Death. The essence of discipleship is that we do not simply receive the fruit of Jesus’ suffering and death; the essence of discipleship is that we carry his cross. Disciples go wherever the Master goes. Coming to understand who Jesus is, his mission, and how that relates to us his disciples is no easy task; it takes a lifetime. Like Jesus, to be faithful followers by taking up our cross means we will feel this to the depths of our humanity: We will suffer, we will lose heart, we will cry out to God to take life’s miserable lot away from us. But also like Jesus we have divine life which gives us the strength to carry our cross. It is divine life pulsing within us—which we first receive at our baptism—that raises up our humanity enabling us to be faithful disciples carrying our crosses. Many thanks to all those who participated in the Lenten Confessions this year. I am grateful to the priests for sharing time from their very busy schedules to serve us as confessors. Celebrating the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is a very important part of our preparation for the Solemnity of Easter. The priests enjoyed a nice meal together with time for us to catch up with one another. Welcome to all those who join our parish community for Palm Sunday of Our Lord’s Passion and Death. This begins Holy Week. Please consult the parish website, e-bulletin, or the quad-fold mailer that was sent to all of our registered parishioners for your convenience. This week the Chrism Mass will be celebrated by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton on Monday at 7:30 pm at the CoCathedral of Saint Robert Bellarmine, Freehold. Due to Co-vid protocols, this liturgy will be streamed to all interested persons. One of the great traditions in our parish community is our care for the celebration of the liturgy. The celebration of the Triduum (3 Days: Holy Thursday-Good FridayEaster Vigil) is an opportunity for us to reflect on
the mysteries of our faith and to celebrate them with dignity and reverence. The Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the beginnings of the Priesthood, and the call to service of all Jesus’ disciples. The Service of the Lord’s Passion at 12:00 noon in the Church. This is THE Liturgy of Good Friday. The Outdoor Way of the Cross is prayed at 3:00 pm. We will pray morning prayer in our Lenten Chapel (Parish Hall) on Saturday. Remember to bring with you your special baked goods, meats, and Easter Baskets on Saturday at 9 am and we will bless them during morning prayer. There will be no Saturday 4/5 pm mass as prescribed by Universal Liturgical Law. The Easter Vigil will be celebrated at 7:30 pm. We have additional Masses Easter Sunday morning for your convenience. Please check the adjusted times. Plan on participating in these beautiful and prayerful liturgies. These are busy days. Much collaboration is required in order to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy in a prayerful and dignified manner. In advance I thank all those who so generously share their time and talent to make our parish community the welcoming, prayerful and reverent community we continue to become. We will welcome His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, to celebrate the 5:00 pm Mass on Saturday, 17 April 2021. Following the blessing and dismissal of the Mass we will process to the Narthex Gathering Area to bless the newly installed image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Seat of Wisdom. Please join us for this Mass and blessing. There will be an extra 300 or so chairs set up for Easter Sunday. This will make room for greater participation and enable some physical distancing. I am grateful to all those who faithfully wear their face coverings and sanitize their hands. Have a great week.
