As we continue our re-opening, it is important to address one thing that has been on people’s minds. Why should we sing at Mass? A very important question that has fortunately simple answers. We should sing at Mass because the Universal Church expects us to do so. One of the driving reasons behind the reforms of the Second Vatican Council was for “Full and active participation in the Mass”. What does this mean? This means attentive listening to the word of God during the liturgy of the word. This means that when we say “Thanks Be To God”, we truly mean it. This means that when we respond to the Word of the Lord in the psalm, we sing its antiphon (refrain) with our whole voice and heart. We watch, listen, and respond in song to the priest during the prayers of the Communion Rite. The Mass is not a spectator sport. We MUST participate. The singing of the Ordinary, (the parts of the Mass that do not change weekly: the Gloria, the Eucharistic Acclamations, etc) is of utmost importance and these parts are to always be sung at every Mass. The singing of the Propers of the Mass (the parts that change: the psalms, the communion antiphon, etc) is a tradition as old as the organized Church itself, and it is one that we carry on today. The singing of the hymns (a tradition borrowed from our Protestant brethren, who borrowed it from the Catholic tradition of singing hymns at the Liturgy of the Hours), although optional, is still important, as the hymns that are chosen for a particular day are meant to re-affirm the teachings of the readings from the day, or the nature of the liturgical season.

Updated Covid-19 Protocols at St Mary Parish There are updated directives from the Diocese where masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. Also Effective June 4, all indoor gathering limits will be removed . Although these directives represent a reduction of pandemic restrictions, St Mary has a few requirements for Mass.
The Sign of Peace will resume but we encourage parishioners to replace a handshake with a reverent gesture, such as a nod or wave.
During the Our Father please refrain from holding hands or making contact with any nonfamily member.
St Mary has decided to continue with the electronic bulletin that is timely emailed to our parishioners each week. If you should require a printed copy, please contact Andrea Billitteri at the parish Office (732-780-2666 ext. 311) and one will be made available to you.

With the lifting of the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass, we have discontinued the broadcast Mass after June 13, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. There remain many options on TV and the internet for those who choose.

Bishops discuss a national pastoral on youth, young adults WASHINGTON – In a June 17 presentation to the U.S. bishops at their annual spring assembly, which was virtual again this year, Dallas Bishop Edward J. Burns announced a proposal to develop a new national pastoral framework on accompanying youths and young adults in the church.
He said the work will be presented to the body of bishops for review at their November 2022 meeting. It will be developed by the bishops' Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. After his presentation, the bishops voted on the proposal, with the tally announced June 18, the final day of their meeting. The measure passed with 222 voting in favor of it. Seven bishops voted against; there were no abstentions. Bishop Burns, a member of that committee and the youth episcopal liaison to World Youth Day 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal, said this new pastoral framework would be in light of "Christus Vivit" ("Christ Lives"), Pope Francis' 2019 reflections on the previous year's Synod of Bishops on young people. That work encouraged young people about their place in the church and also urged older people not to stifle the enthusiasm of the young. Read

To have … God has given each man and woman an abundance of gifts and marriage is one of them! What would you think of a person who has an amazing gift, a gift that brings lasting happiness, but doesn’t open it? Even more bewildering, what if the gift is in plain sight, but the person still does not open it? Sounds strange? Not really. For a variety of reasons, from distractions to presumptions, from insecurity to arrogance, from fear to foolhardiness, people can easily miss a gift. This all-to-common human inclination to not see the forest for the trees can make us laugh or cry depending upon what it is that we missed. With this in mind, let us remember that as people of faith, we don’t want to miss God’s gifts to us— they are, after all, from the Lord God Himself. And, they are given to us for our ultimate happiness! Let’s take a look at these gifts, especially that of marriage and the family. Read

Religious Freedom Week to promote ‘solidarity’ with persecuted, prayerful response Drawing upon inspiration from great saints who remained faithful in the face of adversity, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has assigned June 22-29 as Religious Freedom Week – a week beginning with the Feasts of Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More, ending with the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul and including the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. “During Religious Freedom Week, Catholics are encouraged to pray and act each day for religious freedom,” said Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York and chairman of the USCCB Committee for Religious Liberty. RFW replaces the Fortnight for Freedom that ran 2012-2017.

That is what the new proposed document to be drafted in the next few months will consider, similar to the USCCB document on the Holy Eucharist (“Happy Are Those Called to His Supper”) published in 2006, not a set of national norms on Eucharistic reception, although worthy receiving of the Holy Eucharist will surely be addressed.

Saint of the Week St. Cyril of Alexandria Bishop and Doctor of the Church (June 27) Cyril was born at Alexandria, Egypt. He was nephew of the patriarch of that city, Theophilus. During the rest of his life, Cyril wrote treatises that clarified the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation and that helped prevent Nestorianism and Pelagianism from taking long -term deep root in the Christian community. He was the most brilliant theologian of the Alexandrian tradition. His writings are characterized by accurate thinking, sermons. He was declared a doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1882. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Death is part of our human lives. Yet, Jesus’ inauguration of God’s kingdom vanquishes death and restores life. Like Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage, all we need do to overcome death is reach out and touch the nearness of Jesus. Death not only means the cessation of physical life but also all those everyday “dying's to self ” that call us to surrender our wills to God’s will. In the Christian mystery, death is the doorway to life. Just as Jairus and the woman forgot their own stations in life and overcame their fears in order to receive life from Jesus, so must we surrender our own wills in order to encounter Jesus and receive life. God’s kingdom of life is not built by avoiding death, but by embracing it. Living the paschal mystery is none other than our daily dying to self---overcoming our fears and reaching out to Jesus in humility---in all the little practical ways that fill our daily routines. Paschal Mystery dying is as simple as smiling at the children even when we are bone tired or taking an hour out of our day to visit the sick. When we surrender in humility to his goodness and power, Jesus offers us life. For our reflection this week: How can your faith have an impact on other people’s lives? What does it mean for you as disciples to build a kingdom of life? As we end another fiscal year it is important for us to pause and to give thanks and praise to almighty God for all the blessings we continue to receive. Even in the midst of some uncertainty there are countless blessings for us to acknowledge. This is especially important when as we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of our country this
coming week. Independence Day is a time to acknowledge the freedom that we enjoy and the sacrifices that have been made and continue to be made in order for us to live in a free society. We will observe an abbreviated Mass schedule for Independence Day Weekend. Many thanks to all those have offered prayerful support to Father Gene as he grieves the death of his mother Pauline. Restricted travel to and from India prevented him from returning home to be with his siblings. I am grateful Bill Boglioli from the Holmdel Funeral Home for assisting Father Gene at this time as well as our parish Lazarus Ministry and our parish staff. We have returned to the offering of a gesture of peace during the celebration of mass. It is strongly recommended that we remain conscious offer a gesture such as a simple bow of the head or a restrained wave thus avoiding flesh to flesh contact with non-family members. Thank you for your attentiveness and care regarding this matter. Our Parish Pastoral Council unanimously recommended to me and our staff that we resume hosting the many non-parish support groups using our facilities. Originally this was scheduled to resume during the month of September 2021. However, we are beginning to host these groups as soon as possible given their importance. Our parish has a long history of providing meeting space for a number of self-help groups. This is directly connected to your generous sacrificial stewardship. Enjoy these summer days.
