Spotlight on Music: Salve Regina One of four Marian chants are sung frequently throughout the church year. Traditionally, a hymn to the virgin is sung at the conclusion of Compline (Night Prayer), the last of the hours from the Liturgy of the Hours prayed each day. In common practice, Compline is usually a private occasion unless in a monastic setting where numbers of religious and/or laity would gather to pray the hours together. In some communities, semi-regular celebration of the hours takes place for the benefit of the faithful to attend. In other areas, the Marian hymns are sung after the conclusion of Mass, at or prior to the clergy’s recession from the church proper - sometimes every Mass on every Sunday, sometimes at “High Mass”, or perhaps on the first Sunday of the month. The Salve Regina is the Marian anthem for Ordinary Time, more specifically the time between Pentecost Sunday and the first Sunday of Advent. The original text dates to the 12th Century and the (quite tuneful) chant melody is generally believed to be anonymous. The text in Latin and its
English translation are found below. This text is also frequently said at the end of the Rosary, and sung at some Funeral services.

Reinstating the General Obligation to Attend Mass
Updated Covid-19 Protocols at St Mary Parish
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE NEW JERSEY BISHOPS
There are updated directives from the Diocese where masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. Also Effective June 4, all indoor gathering limits will be removed .
The Catholic Bishops of New Jersey have announced on May 20, 2021 that they are lifting the dispensation of the Sunday and Holy Days Mass obligation beginning on Saturday, June 5, 2021, and Sunday, June 6, 2021. We are very pleased to welcome our parishioners to return to the regular participation in the Sunday Eucharist, the source and summit of our Catholic faith. This obligation, naturally, does not apply to those who are ill, recently exposed to the coronavirus or another serious or contagious illness, confined to their home, a hospital, or nursing facility, or with serious underlying health conditions. Keep in mind all safety protocols (such as wearing masks, social distancing, etc.) and liturgical at St Mary will remain in place until modified or revoked by Bishop David M. O’ Connell. Although these directives represent a reduction of pandemic restrictions, St Mary has a few requirements for Mass.
The Sign of Peace will resume but we encourage parishioners to replace a handshake with a reverent gesture, such as a nod or wave.

Religious Freedom Week Religious Freedom Week will be observed this year from June 22 to June 29 and the theme chosen is Solidarity in Freedom. “Solidarity means much more than engaging in sporadic acts of generosity. It means thinking and acting in terms of community” (Fratelli tutti, 116). Religious freedom allows the Church, and all religious communities, to live out their faith in public and to serve the good of all. The USCCB has prepared resources to “Pray – Reflect – Act” . Each day focuses on different religious liberty topics of concern for the bishops. These materials were prepared to help people understand religious liberty from a Catholic perspective, pray about particular issues, and act on what they learn by advocating for policies that promote religious freedom.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The RCIA program involves not just the newcomer or "inquirer" but all the members of the community who by prayer and personal example help the inquirer find his or her place in the Church.

Saint of the Week-St. Vincent Kaun Martyr of Japan. A native of Korea, he was brought to Japan in 1591 as a prisoner of war and was subsequently converted to Christianity. Entering the Jesuits, he studied at the Jesuit seminary of Arima and worked for three decades as a catechist in both Japan and China. Seized during the persecution of the Church, he was burned alive at Nagasaki with Blessed Francis Pacheco. He was beatified in 1867.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The gospel is filled with symbolism. The storm is a metaphor for the difficulties that beset us at every stage of life. The boat is an image of the church gathered---a suffering, persecuted, challenged Church. The gospel illustrates the care that we desire: that the storm be stilled, that we be delivered. The first reading illustrates what God offers us: that God is present at all times. How do we read this story, we who already know who Jesus is? The gospel challenges us to move beyond an understanding of Jesus as the one who is there when we need him (even though that is true) to the beckoning Light who brings us home to eternal life. This past Spring has been quite beautiful. Lots of very green trees and plants. Lots of pollen on the cars and pools. Rain and some extreme heat. However, this year I noticed something new…at least for me. There were many more birds this year. Some of the birds were chirping so loud that they woke me up in the morning even with the windows closed. Throughout the day there were an array of birds in the yard… including, of course, woodpeckers! This spring was a celebration of Gods creation that I had not experienced in prior years. As summer begins we celebrate God’s gift of recreation so that we might be re-created and readied for continued spiritual, physical and social progress in our lives and in our community. During the coming weeks some of our parish music ministry personnel will be on holiday and there may be times when we sing a cappella. We will strive to cover our religious services with appropriate music. However, each of us can contribute to the faithful celebration of the liturgy by participating well in our prayer together. It is good for all of us to work hard, but it is equally good that we make time to be re-created. It is necessary for us to remember that we are essentially spiritual beings and not machines; therefore time for slowing down, smelling the roses and renewing relationships can be vital to our own progress as disciples of the Lord Jesus. During these last weeks of the fiscal year our staff is busy finishing up the details of administration and
preparing for a new fiscal year. Preparations are proceeding nicely for the publication of our Annual Stewardship Report due out in late September of this year. This is one of the ways in which the oversight of our parish is transparent to you the parishioner as stakeholders in the mission and ministry of our parish community. I thank all of you for your serious commitment to our parish so that we can fulfill our obligations and honor the commitments that have been made to compensate to our co-workers, properly maintain our facilities and offering the very best opportunities for worship, outreach, ministry and spiritual growth. I am grateful to you for the prayerful support you have been offering to Father Gene as he grieves the death of his mother Pauline. It is difficult to experience the death of a mother. I could not begin to comprehend the experience being unable to join with my siblings. Thank you. This weekend we acknowledge and celebrate the noble vocation of Fatherhood! I wish all of our Fathers, Grandfathers, Great Grandfathers, Godfathers and Expectant Fathers a very Happy Father’s Day. You are very important in the life of your family and in the life of our church. May God bestow the choicest of blessing upon you as you strive to guide your family through the intercession of Saint Joseph. There are a few additional personnel announcements to be made. David Maliekel, our parish principal cantor, has informed us that he will no longer be part of our parish music ministry staff as of 30 June. He will be taking a job in the IT field. Working each weekend has become difficult since his girlfriend works during the week. This will allow them more time together. Thank You David. Deacon John Wedemeyer has informed me and has written to the appropriate Diocesan Personnel requesting a leave of absence from his assignment. He needs to be more present to his family and their needs at this time. I thanked Deacon John for his service to our parish and his participation in our parish staff. Have a great week. Embracing Father’s Day as a celebration of faith Like “Mother’s Day” in the United States, “Father’s Day” celebrations began here in the early 20 th century. Their true origins, however, are rooted in Catholic religious devotions to St. Joseph in the Middle Ages. For the most part, the national observance of “Father’s Day” is a secular holiday.
