The Ordering of Ordinary Time During Ordinary Time, the Gospel readings are essentially sequential, picking up on one Sunday where we left off the Sunday prior. The same is true of the Epistle, with excerpts being taken sequentially from the Pauline letters to the Corinthians, Ephesians, the letters of Saints James and John, etc. This is where Ordinary comes from - meaning ”ordered”. This provides a strong sense of continuity in the readings for the Sunday congregant. The Gospel narratives, when told in sequence like this, give us a greater understanding of the life of Jesus Christ during his public earthly ministry. Conversely, there is the temptation for one to feel like they are experiencing the same thing week after week. While there are some points to be made there, (for example, the 19th, 20th and 21st Sundays in Ordinary Time, Year B, all have Psalm 34: “Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord” proclaimed), we must remember that the repetition serves the purpose of reaffirming our faith and why we come to Mass each and every weekend, to worship God communally and receive the Holy Eucharist. The music during this time also has periods of great variety or repetition as well. Some weeks, the antiphons for the entrance or communion may be very similar and certain hymns may repeat often, whereas others are more “once-a-year” offerings, such as for the Transfiguration, or the feasts of saints which occur during this time.

Reinstating the General Obligation to Attend Mass

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE NEW JERSEY BISHOPS
There are updated directives from the Diocese where masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. Also Effective June 4, all indoor gathering limits will be removed .
The Catholic Bishops of New Jersey have announced on May 20, 2021 that they are lifting the dispensation of the Sunday and Holy Days Mass obligation beginning on Saturday, June 5, 2021, and Sunday, June 6, 2021. We are very pleased to welcome our parishioners to return to the regular participation in the Sunday Eucharist, the source and summit of our Catholic faith. This obligation, naturally, does not apply to those who are ill, recently exposed to the coronavirus or another serious or contagious illness, confined to their home, a hospital, or nursing facility, or with serious underlying health conditions. Keep in mind all safety protocols (such as wearing masks, social distancing, etc.) and liturgical at St Mary will remain in place until modified or revoked by Bishop David M. O’ Connell. The Sign of Peace will resume but we encourage parishioners to replace a handshake with a reverent gesture, such as a nod or wave.

Religious Freedom Week Religious Freedom Week will be observed this year from June 22 to June 29 and the theme chosen is Solidarity in Freedom. “Solidarity means much more than engaging in sporadic acts of generosity. It means thinking and acting in terms of community” (Fratelli tutti, 116). Religious freedom allows the Church, and all religious communities, to live out their faith in public and to serve the good of all. The USCCB has prepared resources to “Pray – Reflect – Act” . Each day focuses on different religious liberty topics of concern for the bishops. These materials were prepared to help people understand religious liberty from a Catholic perspective, pray about particular issues, and act on what they learn by advocating for policies that promote religious freedom.

Here’s a short list of ways you can fully embrace this liturgical season and get caught up in Christ: 1. Examine your habits. Your day to day life is typically just a series of habits played out one after the other. If you want your life to change, the first place to look is your habits. A great new habit to start: reading the daily Gospel. 2. Gratitude. Joy always finds its root in gratitude. Try starting each day by thanking God for five ordinary, everyday things. If you have a family, try going around the table at dinner time and list off things together. 3. Use your imagination to reflect on the daily life of Jesus. Imagine Jesus doing the simple things. Eating, walking, joking with his friends. Praying. Make yourself a bystander to the Gospel stories in your imagination. Ordinary Time is anything but ordinary. But the true power of the season is only unlocked if you live it!
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Pauline Maria Lilly Savarimuthu, mother of Fr. Eugene Savarimuthu, Chaplain to the NJ Army National Guard and Adjunct Priest residing at St Mary Parish, Colts Neck assisting parishes of Cohort 13. She was hospitalized in India Friday past with COVID 19. She died 3:00pm our time Wednesday, 9 June 2021. Due to COVID-19 restrictions in India, Fr. Gene is unable to return home to be with his family at this time. A Mass of Christian Burial without the presence of the body will be scheduled on Wednesday 16 June 2021 at 7:00 PM to pray for the repose of her soul. Please pray for Fr. Gene and his siblings. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Kingdom of God is rooted in the activity of the sower who sows the seed. This is a reference to Jesus and his public ministry. The parable of the seed growing by itself places God at the center. The soil and the seed do their mysterious work. The seed germinates and grows day and night. However, the sower must continue to cultivate the soil making sure that weeds do not overcome the fragile sprouts. The sower nurtures the seeds. Jesus speaks in parables so that his audience can understand the teaching, not immediately, but in time after reflection. Parables are not simple stories as they might first appear. Parables are intended to open us up to God’s plan for us. Jesus uses parables to reveal himself to the disciples. Parables challenge us to rediscover that which has already been revealed to us through our prayer, formation and life experience. Therefore, we must believe in the hidden potential of the smallest of seeds (God’s Word) which can grow beyond all hope. Last weekend RJoy Balacillo who served as a summer intern in our parish several years ago was ordained to the Priesthood for service in our Diocese of Trenton. He has been assigned by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton to the Parish of Saint Gregory the Great, Hamilton Square, Mercer County, NJ. Let us pray for Fr. RJoy, those preparing to be ordained priests and those who are serving as priests in our diocese. Next weekend our country honors those who embrace the noble vocation of parenting as
“Fathers”. What an important role in our society and in our Church. We believe that the Family is the “Domestic Church” of the home. Let us pray for all those who embrace their vocation as fathers. These role models are so very important to our children and young people. One of the chief responsibilities of fathers is passing on the faith and witnessing to our faith through their personal choices. Congratulations. We have released additional adjustments to our Covid-19 gathering process. I encourage you to take a look at them in this week’s bulletin. They are based on guidance received from our diocesan advisory commission, conversation among our parish team members, and in consultation with our Parish Pastoral Council members. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this time of transition. I had the opportunity to represent our parish community at the Annual Memorial Day Parade. It was a beautiful day with great participation. I was invited to attend the ground breaking for the new municipal building last week. We continue to make steady progress toward our 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal Goal. I am grateful to those who have made their gift as well as those who have made a pledge. Thank you.
