FOR DEEPER REFLECTION

Discipleship opening our hearts to Jesus acting upon it.

Question for Children: you to grow deeper in your faith?

Question for Youth: When the sower, in this week’s Gospel, sowed his seed, not all of it fell in “good soil. What can you do in the coming week to make sure that you are open to God in your life? What is getting in the way of your being “good soil?

Question for Adults: Using the parable of Jesus in this reading, describe how faith has been planted in your life? How long did it take for that seed to land “on good soil?”

SAINT OF THE WEEK

Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor, 1221-1274 - This saint was born at Bagnorea in Tuscany, the son of John Fidanza and Mary Ritella. He was christened John at his Baptism. Stricken with a dangerous illness as a baby, at his mother’s plea, little John was prayed for by Saint Francis of Assisi. As he recovered, the saint, seeing a great future for the baby, exclaimed, “O buona ventura” O good fortune! Thus did he receive the name by which he was known throughout his life.

Bonaventure entered the Franciscan order at the age of twenty-two and was sent to Paris to complete his studies. It was in Paris that his reputation for genius manifested itself, and here that he became a close friend of Thomas Aquinas.

In 1257, he received the degree of doctor along with his friend, ceding to the reluctant Aquinas the honor of having it first conferred upon him. In the same year, Bonaventure, not yet thirty-six, was elected minister general of the Franciscan order, an order torn by internal dissension after the death of Saint Francis. Certain members felt that the rule was not severe enough while the other extreme desired mitigating some of the restrictions. Thomas Aquinas said that it would take a saint to bring this order together. Saint Bonaventure was this saint.

WORSHIP & MUSIC

Spotlight on Music: Salve Regina

One of four Marian chants are sung frequently throughout the church year. Traditionally, a hymn to the virgin is sung at the conclusion of Compline (Night Prayer), the last of the hours from the Liturgy of the Hours prayed each day. In common practice, Compline is usually a private occasion unless in a monastic setting where numbers of religious and/or laity would gather to pray the hours together. In some communities, semi-regular celebration of the hours takes place for the benefit of the faithful to attend. In other areas, the Marian hymns are sung after the conclusion of Mass, at or prior to the clergy sometimes every Mass on every Sunday, sometimes at “High Mass”, or perhaps on the first Sunday of the month.

The Salve Regina is the Marian anthem for Ordinary Time, more specifically the time between Pentecost Sunday and the first Su of Advent. The original text dates to the 12th Century and the (quite tuneful) chant melody is generally believed to be anony The text in Latin and its English translation are found below.

This text is also frequently said at the end of the Rosary, and sung at some Funeral services.

Salve Regina, mater misericordiae:

O clemens: O pia: O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail Holy Queen, mother of mercy: our life, sweetness, and hope.

To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.

To you we sigh, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, our advocate, those merciful eyes toward us.

And Jesus, the blessed fruit of thy womb, after our exile, show us.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Quo vadis...

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Only seed that sinks into rich soil can produce fruit; we must let God’s word sink deep within us so that it can bear fruit in our lives! Most of us hear God’s word proclaimed primarily during the Liturgy of the Word on Sundays. It is naïve to think that we can go to Mass cold, without having prepared the readings, and be attuned enough to God’s word to hear and remember the message well enough to live it. One way to live the paschal mystery is to take quality time each week—alone or with others to sit with God’s word and become attuned to the message. If we invite others to join us then we are even taking up Jesus’ mission to teach others of God’s wonderful deeds of salvation.

Our nation has celebrated the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. What a wonderful milestone. We had the wonderful and unplanned visit of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton for Mass last weekend. During the extreme heat we made some adjustments to conserve energy…thank you for your cooperation.

This coming week we will continue with our Virtual Summer Intensive Religious Education program. We are blessed with facilities that enable us to develop such initiatives throughout the summer months. The July two week module is virtual. This is designed for our parishioner families who may not be in 07722 for much of the summer months and who may be involved in sports programming throughout the year. This style of Summer RE is designed to help families balance the many demands of their time throughout the year with more and more heads of household working outside the home, greater commuting distances and

increased involvement in local and travel sports teams. We are fortunate to have as our catechetical staff some teachers from Catholic and other Schools in our area who are certified educators, fully compliant with VIRTUS Safe Environment Standards and Certified Catechists. I am grateful to our staff for the efforts they have put into offering this for our parish families and to the parents for their openness and cooperation especially during the various listening sessions that were held along the way. Together, we will continue to build on the strong tradition of Faith Formation that makes our community a great parish.

The summer months provide us with all sorts of possibilities to be outdoors, to share time with family and friends as well as with the Lord when we gather for mass. Sometimes we get mixed messages from the Church. Programs end for the summer, some ministries stop, etc…. However, the invitation to come and pray together each and every Sunday (Saturday Eve) does not end for the summer. Our need for the Eucharist is not seasonal. I do recognize that there are some among us who are blessed with a second home to enjoy throughout the summer months and I trust that Sunday Mass is part of your routines. However, for those of us who remain home, let’s not neglect our obligation and the need we have to support one another in our parish community.

Please complete the Parish 2030 Survey this week if you have not already done so. This weekend I will be in Maryland as my brother is being installed Grand Knight of his local council. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
