Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org Theology & Hymnody (Part 1) In this multi-part series, the topic of how our Catholic theology plays into the hymns we sing, and why certain pieces are preferred over others, for certain occasions, will be discussed. First and foremost, a distinction between CATHOLIC theology and CHRISTIAN theology and the respective faith traditions must be made. One of the most important distinctions is that between the Catholic belief in the true presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, and the beliefs of other faiths that the bread and wine are symbolic of the last supper and the sacrifice at Calvary, but stop short of the belief in transubstantiation. In this article, we will explore some generic, praise-worthy phrases, and what the meaning of these phrases would mean to different believers. To begin, when we see text like, “we are the body of Christ”, it does ring true to Catholic teaching, as we as a Church are the body of Christ, as we read in Corinthians. However, if we were to change the wording slightly to “we become the bread we eat”, it is not as strong a statement; it lacks clarity and adherence to a specific teaching, even though the intent may be the same. It is more ecumenical, sure, and appropriate for a non-denominational or interfaith gathering, but not for use at a Catholic Mass. Even if the tune itself is beautifully written and the rest of the text A-OK, phrases like that which are left open to interpretation can blur the lines between Catholic teaching and the beliefs of others and thus should not be utilized. In a similar vein, the phrase “through Christ alone we are saved”, is true to all Christian teaching, Catholic included. “Through him we are saved and made free” - saved from sin and given the promise of eternal life. There are no other gods but the triune God of Father, Son and Spirit. Now the phrase, “through grace alone we are saved” - similar in intent, but it implies that God’s grace will save us, (true) regardless of our deeds or because of them (herein lie the question marks). The ambiguity is problematic as Catholics and some Christian faith traditions believe one thing while others believe the other. In these examples, one can see how well-written and wellintended text can lead to a prayerful experience. But authentic, unencumbered, concise text can foster a more spiritual and FAITHfully active prayer environment. In another article, we will explore more concrete examples from specific sources.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If we all persisted in praying for the gift of the indwelling Spirit, were faithful in sharing the abundance of God’s life and gifts that the Spirit brings, and held as primary our relationship with God, then our prayer for our needs would probably be different. There is nothing wrong with prayer for specific needs; after all, we do it every Mass at the general intercessions, not to mention our own prayers of petition. This gospel challenges us to go beyond specific needs and get the larger picture; a focus on the gift of the indwelling Spirit is already God’s answer to all our prayers. What inspires confidence in us is not whether God gives us what we ask for in prayer; our confidence comes from the Spirit who dwells within and establishes a most intimate relationship between God and us-shared life. Our Summer Session Religious Education Module I is underway. I had the opportunity to encounter these young participants as they participated in weekday Masses. I look forward to seeing them on campus this coming week. Module II will commence in a few weeks. This option for RE rests upon the foundation that families participate in Sunday Mass weekly as well as Intergenerational Sessions. We have made some progress…however we have a long way to go in order to achieve our goal. I am grateful to those families who are
helping us to strengthen our commitment to forming and educating our young people in our Catholic Faith. The month of August begins this week. Our attention begins to focus on back to school issues. Last weekend we hosted the Jersey Club of the University of Notre Dame as they gathered incoming freshman for Mass and a cookout here on our parish campus. They have been doing this for many years and most recently here in 07722. It was wonderful to encounter these young people excited and hesitant about beginning this new chapter in their life. Other students from our parish will begin or return to college life. Others will return to or begin their journey through high school. These are exciting times for our students as they begin to learn the lessons of life…starting over…making new friends…discovering new things in their own lives. Those who may need childcare services for their toddlers and preschoolers might check out the Future Generations program here on our parish campus. I continue to receive positive feedback from families who entrust their children to this program. This coming week our parish will offer a summer music concert Thursday Eve, 1 August in the evening. What does it all mean? Moving to a more traditional style logo each symbol is representative of Saint Mary Parish, her patroness the Virgin Mary and the community in which we are located. The Miller’s Cross is reminiscent of Buck’s Mill and is also represented in the Diocesan Coat of Arms. Fleur de lis is a symbol of The Blessed Virgin Mary; it resembles both the Iris and the Madonna Lily. Blue, the color used in the field and in the fleur de lis, is traditionally associated with Mary. The lower portion of the logo contains three horses symbolic of the Trinity and representative of Colts Neck with its many horse farms. This section also contains the year our parish was established (1972). The Logo’s banner reminds us of how we can be good stewards using the three elements of Stewardship: time, talent and treasure. Over time, you will see many variations and shades of this same logo used. The black and white logo is used on parish letterhead, Mass Intention Cards, and mailing envelopes.
