Saint Mary Magdalene One of the few named women in the Bible, Mary Magdalene was a disciple of Jesus, one of his closest. In Luke’s Gospel, we are told that “Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out…” (Luke 8:2). In all of the Gospels, she is present at the crucifixion and the first to witness the miracle of the resurrection. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells her, “Go to my brothers and tell them: I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God” (John 20:17), after which she announces to the remaining apostles that she has seen the risen Lord. She is the apostle that Jesus sent to tell the others, leading to Pope Francis calling her the “apostle to the apostles” and she has remained a model of faith. Her feast day is July 22. She is the patron saint of women and repentant sinners.

Updated Covid-19 Protocols at St Mary Parish

There are updated directives from the Diocese where masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. Also Effective June 4, all indoor gathering limits will be removed .
All couples celebrating their 1st, 25th or 50+ wedding anniversary during the 2020 or 2021 calendar year are invited to share the Eucharist, reaffirm your sacred wedding vows, and receive Bishop O’Connell’s Episcopal Blessing.
Although these directives represent a reduction of pandemic restrictions, St Mary has a few requirements for Mass.
The Sign of Peace will resume but we encourage parishioners to replace a handshake with a reverent gesture, such as a nod or wave.
During the Our Father please refrain from holding hands or making contact with any nonfamily member.

With the lifting of the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass, we have discontinued the broadcast Mass after June 13, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. There remain many options on TV and the internet for those who choose.

That is what the new proposed document to be drafted in the next few months will consider, similar to the USCCB document on the Holy Eucharist (“Happy Are Those Called to His Supper”) published in 2006, not a set of national norms on Eucharistic reception, although worthy receiving of the Holy Eucharist will surely be addressed.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We all need to go off to a “deserted place” occasionally to “rest a while.” Whether this means taking some time alone each day to pray and rest in God, making Sunday truly a day of rest, or setting aside a few days a year to make a retreat, all of us need time to regain our strength so we can take up our own shepherding tasks. If the mission overwhelms us we will be unable to persevere. Achieving a balance between the work of discipleship and the need to rest from weariness can be no easy task in itself. Like Jesus, we are called to shepherd—to care, teach, heal, listen, etc.—and, also like Jesus, we are called to make our life one characterized by self-giving. Somehow we are to balance this with rest, with time to replenish our spirit and energy. Self-giving and rest are two parallel poles to the dying and rising dynamic of the paschal mystery. Too much dying can crush us. Too much rest can lull us into being uncaring shepherds. Gospel living faithful to the mission Jesus has given us requires that we balance contemplation and action. In other words, the mission itself includes downtime. This is how we have fresh encounters with the Jesus who cares—by taking time to rest in him. Let him shepherd us. This weekend we welcome Reverend Msgr. Michael J. Walsh (Fr. Mike as he prefers) to our clergy team. He will be with us for weekend masses (alternating every other weekend with our Co-hort 13 Parish of Saint Catherine of Genoa, Holmdel) and periodically during the week. Additionally, he will work with our RCIA process overseen by the Faith Formation Staff. We already have several inquiries from relatives of parishioners and people living in our 07722 community. They would like to know more about the catholic faith. Some have been baptized as infants; others have not been baptized. It is important that we develop a team to assist us with the various aspects of receiving these requests from inquirers and other seekers. There is interest in collaborating with Saint Catherine to share some aspects of this process. I
invite anyone who might be interested in assisting with this process to contact Rose Farrow at the parish office. I have been encouraged by the number of parishioner families who have returned to in-person Sunday Mass. It is important that we encourage one another to make this a priority for family life. Requests continue for families choosing to present their children for the Sacrament of Baptism. We are now providing regularly scheduled preparation sessions for ease of registration. We continue to remain flexible (in as much as possible) in accommodating requests for scheduling on Saturday after the anticipated mass and Sunday following the 10am and 12noon masses. We are currently in the process of preparing 16 couples for the Sacrament of Marriage. It is exciting to be with these couples as they begin to form their Catholic Family Life. Please continue to pray for these couples and all those preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage as well as those preparing them.
Next weekend we welcome Fr. Dawit Moroda from the Diocese of Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte of Ethiopia. He will be offering the homily at each of the four masses next weekend. This is part of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith Mission Cooperative. This is one way in which we can participate directly in the Church’s Missionary activity. Missionary Co-op Weekend July 24th and 25th Fr Dawit Moroda will be making the plea at all Masses for the Diocese of Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte of Ethiopia. The Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte is one of thirteen Dioceses in Ethiopia. It provides pastoral and social services in the western part of Ethiopia. People are mainly small-scale farmers whose livelihood totally depends on the rain -fed agriculture and animal products. Beside evangelization, spiritual assistance and family counselling, the church renders educational services for poor children, literacy programs for adults, mother and child support, old age assistance, drinking water facility, construction of houses for the poor and others. A second collection will be taken up that weekend for our Missionary Cooperation Plan. Please make your checks out to St. Mary Parish and indicate “Mission Appeal” in the memo line. Take Action Now to Protect the Hyde Amendment The Hyde Amendment, contained in the federal government’s annual appropriations legislation, prohibits federal funding of domestic abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. It is a bipartisan provision that has been part of federal appropriations for 45 years (since 1976) and enjoys overwhelming public support. Now some members in Congress want to take away these laws that both Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly half a century. If successful billions of taxpayer dollars could be used to pay for abortions. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is asking all Catholics and people of good will to sign a petition to let Congress know they support the Hyde Amendment and do not want tax dollars paying for
abortions.
