Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Virgin, First Native American Saint Nine years after the Jesuits Isaac Jogues and companions were martyred by Iroquois warriors, a baby girl was born near the place of their martyrdom, Auriesville, New York. Her mother was a Christian Algonquin, taken captive by the Iroquois and given as wife to the chief of the Mohawk clan, the boldest and fiercest of the Five Nations. When she was four, Tekakwitha lost her parents and little brother in a smallpox epidemic that left her disfigured and half blind. She was adopted by an uncle, who succeeded her father as chief. He hated the coming of the Blackrobes—Jesuit missionaries—but could do nothing to them because a peace treaty with the French required their presence in villages with Christian captives. She was moved by the words of three Blackrobes who lodged with her uncle, but fear of him kept her from seeking instruction. Tekakwitha refused to marry a Mohawk brave, and at 19 finally got the courage to take the step of converting. She was baptized with the name Kateri--Catherine --on Easter Sunday. Now she would be treated as a slave. Because she would not work on Sunday, Kateri received no food that day. She told a missionary that she often meditated on the great dignity of being baptized. She was powerfully moved by God’s love for human beings and saw the dignity of each of her people. She was always in danger, for her conversion and holy life created great opposition. On the advice of a priest, Kateri stole away one night and began a 200-mile walking journey to a Christian Indian village at Sault St. Louis, near Montreal. For three years she grew in holiness, giving herself totally to God in long hours of prayer, in charity, and in strenuous penance. At 23, Kateri took a vow of virginity, an unprecedented act for an Indian woman whose future depended on being married. Her dedication to virginity was instinctive: Kateri did not know about religious life for women until she visited Montreal. Inspired by this, she and two friends wanted to start a community, but the local priest dissuaded her. She humbly accepted an “ordinary” life. She practiced extremely severe fasting as penance for the conversion of her nation. Kateri Tekakwitha died the afternoon before Holy Thursday. Witnesses said that her emaciated face changed color and became like that of a healthy child. The lines of suffering, even the pockmarks, disappeared and the touch of a smile came upon her lips. She was beatified in 1980 and canonized in 2012. Her memorial is July 14. Reprinted from Franciscan Media

Updated Covid-19 Protocols at St Mary Parish

There are updated directives from the Diocese where masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. Also Effective June 4, all indoor gathering limits will be removed .
All couples celebrating their 1st, 25th or 50+ wedding anniversary during the 2020 or 2021 calendar year are invited to share the Eucharist, reaffirm your sacred wedding vows, and receive Bishop O’Connell’s Episcopal Blessing.
Although these directives represent a reduction of pandemic restrictions, St Mary has a few requirements for Mass.
The Sign of Peace will resume but we encourage parishioners to replace a handshake with a reverent gesture, such as a nod or wave.
During the Our Father please refrain from holding hands or making contact with any nonfamily member.

With the lifting of the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass, we have discontinued the broadcast Mass after June 13, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. There remain many options on TV and the internet for those who choose.

That is what the new proposed document to be drafted in the next few months will consider, similar to the USCCB document on the Holy Eucharist (“Happy Are Those Called to His Supper”) published in 2006, not a set of national norms on Eucharistic reception, although worthy receiving of the Holy Eucharist will surely be addressed.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our own lives and times we carry much baggage on our journey as disciples of Jesus. We have closets full of clothes, pantries and refrigerators full of food: many of us are armed with college degrees. The practical instructions of Jesus to his Twelve would not serve us well today; it would be irresponsible to divest ourselves of all our possessions. At the same time this gospel does invite us to examine what it is that hinders us from fulfilling the mission on which Jesus sends all of us, beginning with our baptism. Each of us is a disciple who is sent. What distracts us from our mission? For most of us the greatest distractions probably don’t come from our possessions but from our interior emotions and attitudes. We don’t like rejection—so it is difficult to preach an unpopular gospel with its demands for righteousness and love. We don’t like the risk of being unsuccessful—so it is easier to live our religion by saying prayers rather than by ceaseless self-giving. We don’t like pushing our own faith to its limits—so it is easier to be more concerned with right doctrine than with right living. In spite of our excuses and human weakness, Jesus is clear: “Go…to my people” (first reading). We must keep moving forward with his mission. Last weekend we observed Independence Day. Since it was celebrated on Sunday and legally observed on Monday we were given ample opportunity to reflect on the freedom we enjoy through our independence. This freedom comes to us with responsibility. To care for others and to protect rights given to us in the Constitution. There is much written these days about relevance. Visionary documents, such as the US Constitution, are not by nature to be relevant; rather they are intended to transcend trends and fads to provide clarity in serving the goals of freedom and the persons who live in our great land. I hope that we never lose sight of the gift of freedom and our responsibility to safe guard it.
This weekend we welcome those families who are participating in the July two-week Summer Intensive Religious Education Program. The July Session is being offered virtually for the convenience of our parish families. We have Catholic School Teachers who are certified teachers, certified teachers of religion and fully compliant with safe environment standards. We are grateful to them for their willingness to assist us in preparing our young people to live as Roman Catholics in our world. Thanks to our Parish Faith Formation/Religious Education team. I am pleased to announce a unique opportunity for those who are experiencing difficulties coping with family and social circumstances experienced throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Pastoral Care Spiritual Companionship Counseling opportunity will be offered in the near future. More specific details will be made available for participation in this 7-Week opportunity to assist our parishioners and parishioners of our Co-hort 13 parishes. I am grateful to Father Gene, who has a degree in counselling, for taking up this important ministry as we emerge from the unprecedented pandemic restrictions. I anticipate that this will be offered for the upcoming months. So, if you are unable to secure a spot immediately I ask your patience and cooperation. Take Action Now to Protect the Hyde Amendment The Hyde Amendment, contained in the federal government’s annual appropriations legislation, prohibits federal funding of domestic abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. It is a bipartisan provision that has been part of federal appropriations for 45 years (since 1976) and enjoys overwhelming public support. Now some members in Congress want to take away these laws that both Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly half a century. If successful billions of taxpayer dollars could be used to pay for abortions. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is asking all Catholics and people of good will to sign a petition to let Congress know they support the Hyde Amendment and do not want tax dollars paying for
abortions.
