The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord & Memorial of Saint Blaise February 2nd, also known as Candlemas Day, has been celebrated since the 4th century. This feast commemorates the 40th day after Christmas, when Mary travelled with Jesus and Joseph to the temple in Jerusalem, for her ritual purification after the birth of the Lord. It was in the temple that the prophetess Anna and Simeon the Righteous recognized the child as the Messiah. Simeon, who had been told by the Holy Spirit that he shall not see death until he sees the Christ, praises God in the Nunc Dimittis: “Now let your servant go in peace…I have seen your salvation….a light to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel”. In honoring the revelation of Jesus as the light, it is customary for candles to be blessed on this day. In some cultures, the faithful bring candles from their homes to blessed, but more commonly it is candles that will be used in the life of the church in the coming year that are blessed. In our community, we bless the candles that are used for the blessing of throats on the memorial of Saint Blaise (February 3) and the six candles that will flank the altar beginning at Easter. At the conclusion of the Easter Season, these candles are kept separate from others, used as processional candles, and eventually burned in the holy fire at the Easter Vigil the following year. Traditionally, Candlemas marked the end of the Christmas Season, and decorations where often left up until the Eve of Candlemas. In our parish, we keep that custom in a way, continuing the care of the poinsettia that have been placed in the church until this day. Due to current restrictions, we will not have the usual procession on February 2nd, but all are welcomed to bring their own candles from home to be blessed. On February 3rd, there will not be the individual blessing of throats, but a blessing for all present will take place at Mass.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass. 2021-2022 Religious Education Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the possible exception of first grader families). This includes the New Parishioner Orientation meeting. Copies of each student’s Baptismal certificate and record of previously completed Religious Education classes (if applicable) and sacraments must be received by the office when registering in our program for the first time. Please be aware that children entering grades 2-8 in Sept 2021 must have completed and passed their previous Religious Education grade work before they can be registered for the next school year. Additionally registration/class enrollment will not be processed until all paperwork is in the office. Returning Students who do not have a copy of their Baptismal Certificate on file in the office WILL NOT be secured in a class for the 2021 - 2022 term.
Summer Intensive - Grades 1 - 6: Classes run Monday through Friday for 2 weeks from 8:30 am -12:30 pm (on Campus) or 9 am - 12 noon (Google Classroom). Admission is on a first come first serve basis. Classes close as they fill. We encourage you to register early. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Although it is a Sabbath, Jesus begins the work of the kingdom, teaching, healing, and redeeming. Note the response of the people in the synagogue at Capernaum. The author of the Gospel of Mark notes Jesus’ command to the demon, upon which the assembly exclaims, “A new teaching with authority.” But they also question, “What is this?” In the 1st verse of the Gospel Jesus was identified as the Son of God. Today the challenge for each of us is: Who is this---for me? This week we celebrate The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (2 February). Simeon and Anna might symbolize paschal mystery living for us: they both long awaited the revelation of the Messiah, their enduring fidelity was rewarded by seeing the Christ, they were both holy. Our lives, too, are to be characterized by awaiting the return of Christ at his second coming; our enduring fidelity will be rewarded, too, by seeing Christ. The link between this expectation and fulfillment is to live lives that are holy. We are “refined,” “purified,” “tested” when we allow Christ to “help” us—when we listen to his word and come to the table to be nourished. We are reminded, however, that church (Temple), and life (“grew and became strong”) are related. The paschal mystery celebrated in word and table is the very same mystery lived in the dying and rising of our everyday life. Paschal mystery living is Temple living. Like Simeon and Anna, our very lives exude the expectation of Christ’s redemption. We will bless candles for use in our parish church for
the Sacred Liturgy. We are not permitted to distribute candles this year. However, if you bring candles to be blessed there will be a table on which you may place them to be blessed and taken home with you. February 3rd is the memorial of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr. Our parish will bless throats during the regularly scheduled daily Mass. This is a wonderful custom of our church and I would encourage you to keep this custom by coming to the church to have your throat blessed and asking God, through the intercession of Saint Blasé, to continue to protect you from all diseases of the throat. This year we will be unable to offer individual blessing of throats in keeping with the church’s long standing custom. However, the blessing will be offered following the dismissal for the Mass of the day. WOW! Many THANKS to all of those who generously participated in our 2020 Christmas Collection. This weekend we provide an accounting for your review. Please take time to read it. We should be proud of our stewardship efforts. The net result continues to show that those who have participated are very generous and appreciative of the efforts of our parish as we move forward and I say THANK YOU. I would invite each and every person to continue to reflect on how we can grow in our stewardship efforts as we make a return to the Lord for the blessings in our lives especially during these challenging economic times.
