The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord & Memorial of Saint Blaise February 2nd, also known as Candlemas Day, has been celebrated since the 4th century. This feast commemorates the 40th day after Christmas, when Mary travelled with Jesus and Joseph to the temple in Jerusalem, for her ritual purification after the birth of the Lord. It was in the temple that the prophetess Anna and Simeon the Righteous recognized the child as the Messiah. Simeon, who had been told by the Holy Spirit that he shall not see death until he sees the Christ, praises God in the Nunc Dimittis: “Now let your servant go in peace…I have seen your salvation….a light to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel”. In honoring the revelation of Jesus as the light of the world, it is customary for candles to be blessed on this day. In some cultures, the faithful bring candles from their homes to blessed, but more commonly it is candles that will be used in the life of the church in the coming year that are blessed. In our community, we bless the candles that are used for the blessing of throats on the memorial of Saint Blaise (February 3) and the six candles that will flank the altar beginning at Easter. At the conclusion of the Easter Season, these candles are kept separate from others, used as processional candles, and eventually burned in the holy fire at the Easter Vigil the following year. We also invite the faithful to bring candles for home use to be blessed. Traditionally, Candlemas marked the end of the Christmas Season, and decorations where often left up until the Eve of Candlemas. In our parish, we keep that custom in a way, continuing the care of the poinsettias that have been placed in the church until this day. These two celebrations will be held in the Parish Hall chapel, at 9am, on their respective days. Please bring candles to be blest on February 2nd. Blessing of the throats will occur following the Mass on February 3rd.

Saint of the Week: Dorothy, Virgin and Martyr, c. 303 There is a beautiful story told about St. Dorothy, who was persecuted during the reign of the emperor, Diocletian. The governor of Caesarea, Fabricius, imposed cruel punishments on Dorothy because of her refusal to worship idols or to marry. Dorothy spoke of the garden to which God would take her and the sweet fruits of the garden. The crowning blow for Fabricius occurred when two women, sent to induce Dorothy to give up her faith, were themselves converted. This led to a sentence of execution. As Dorothy was being led to her execution, a young lawyer in the crowd, Theophilus, jeered at Dorothy and yelled at her to send him fruits when she reached the garden where she was going. Liturgy of The Word Dismissal The Liturgy of The Word Dismissal is the practice of having the children, ages 4-12, leave the Sunday assembly during the Liturgy of the Word and gather in a separate environment to engage in the Liturgy of the Word at a level more appropriate to the children’s understanding. The purpose of making the liturgical experience more accessible to the assembled children is to nourish their faith experience and to affirm their value as important participants in the liturgy of God’s Word.

The retreat will replace the regularly scheduled class times for that grade, that week (no class for 8th grade on 2/6 or 2/7, no class for 7th grade on 2/27, 2/28). Both retreats will begin with 12:00 Mass and ending at approximately 3:00pm.

Typical tasks and responsibilities: Listening and preparing adults in a process to be received into the Catholic faith and parish community. Tai Chi is a low impact, weight bearing exercise; and with regular Tai Chi practice, it helps build internal strength, reduce falls, and improve the quality of life. Barbara Schaflin, certified instructor of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention; Diabetes; Memory; and Rehabilitation/Rejuvenation, has taught 103 participants this past year in the various disciplines. He was at St. Mary’s in Middletown for 10 years and we are happy that he has “made his way” to St. Mary’s Colts Neck!

Father will concentrate on our Catholic culture and Lent (which begins on March 2, 2022) and RCIA, which is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Many of us have heard of RCIA, but never really understood the process. Fr. Mike will enlighten everyone and answer any questions that arise. Please note that the rosary is prayed in the “former chapel” at 11:30 a.m. This is a lovely tradition that the Guild established several years ago and we look forward to many participants. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) is at noon and Fr. Mike will begin at 12:30. Every month, the Guild collects items for various organizations and it is heartwarming to see the kindness of our members in the huge amount that always appears! In February, we will be collecting toiletries for Fulfill and we thank you for your generosity.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. As the crowds doubted who Jesus was because of his simple origins, so will others doubt who we are if we courageously live the gospel. Again, if we never meet doubt or opposition then we must examine how committed to the gospel we are. Most of us aren’t called to “professionally” preach the good news. All of us, because of our baptism, are committed to living it. No matter what simple origins we might have, our living the gospel is what must shape our everyday choices. This means, for example, that if the chatter around the coffee machine at work grows uncharitable or course, we have the courage to walk away. Another example: if prejudice exists among our friends and acquaintances, we have the courage to extol the dignity of the minority. Dying to oneself means that we place gospel values before any others and are willing to put our lives on the line for them. We might not always concretely experience God’s protection and deliverance in the given moment; but we know from Jesus’ life that it is there when it really counts—leading us to life everlasting. This coming week we will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas) on 2 February and the memorial of Saint Blaise on 3 February. We will follow the ancient custom of blessing throats during the Thursday morning mass. We have another four weeks until we begin the Liturgical Season of Lent. These weeks are an opportunity for our parish staff to assess the Advent-Christmas Season as we prepare for the Lent-Triduum-Easter Seasons.

I will also meet with our parish finance council members this week to review quarterly reports for the first two quarters of FYE 30 June 2022. We will also discuss several possible initiatives for the coming year and begin to review items for the upcoming capital budget. I am grateful to them for their dedication and sage counsel.
