Singing the Psalms The psalms are an integral part of the liturgy of the word. As poems of praise, they are meant to be sung. Psalmists (those who proclaim the psalm) are sometimes separate from the cantor at a Mass or other service, as their role is to proclaim the sung text with clarity and accurate diction. The assembly are to sing the antiphon of the psalm, again, whenever possible. This can be a challenge when selecting musical settings of the psalms, as the many publishers each have their own (often several) collections of psalmody from which to choose. When selecting psalms for congregational participation, we look for what I deem to be easily singable, regardless of whether or not the printed music is available for the assembly, also taking into account the occasion and time of the liturgical year, as well as stylistic variety. For example, settings with a weighty accompaniment or intricate choral parts work well for special occasions (Easter, Christmas, Holy Days, etc) but may be less appropriate for the Sundays of Ordinary Time.. Shorter, chanted antiphons are ideal for celebrations such as weddings and funerals as there are many guests who may not be accustomed to a particular parish’s repertoire. In our parish, we gather psalms from 6 different resources in an effort to utilize what is A) singable, without excessive textual repetition or melismatic vocal lines, B) provides a variety of forms from solo chant, accompanied chant, and metrical settings in a variety of musical styles. Of course, of utmost importance, is that we engage in full and active participation in the sacred liturgy by singing the psalms at every occasion. Happy Singing!

Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, Third Century Agatha is another of the early saints about whom most our knowledge is based on legend. She was born in Sicily, either Catania or Palermo, both of which claim her as a patron, and was martyred in Catania, most likely during the persecution of the Roman emperor Decius around the middle of the third century. Agatha dedicated herself to God and a life of chastity. When she refused the advances of a Roman consul, he denounced her as a Christian and subjected her to torture and indignities to change her mind. But Agatha’s continued dedication to God and her calm acceptance of torture only infuriated her captors. They cut off her breasts and rolled her over red-hot coals until she died. VALENTINE’S DAY COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT 2024 Once again, residents of Monmouth County will have the opportunity to provide Valentine’s Day cards, notes, letters, and special treats for our military members at Earle Naval Base, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Air Force Base along with Veteran facilities in New Jersey. Last year we collected over 5,000 Valentine messages for our beloved military members! Cards may be handmade or purchased but should include a handwritten sentiment acknowledging the love and appreciation for their military service to our country. Each group of cards and treats should be bundled in a Ziploc type bag and handed in to the parish office to obtain a service hour letter. Service hour letter must be picked up at time of Valentine drop off. Here are some examples of sentiments students can write inside the cards. “Happy Valentine’s day to a true patriot” “Happy Valentine’s day to a real hero” “The commitment you’ve made means so much and is so appreciated.” “Sincere thanks for the big sacrifices you’ve made for our nation.” “You deserve thanks every day for your service.” Students may drop cards off at the parish office during operating hours. Lenten Regulations - Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The days of fast (only one full meal per day) and abstinence (no meat) are

Ash Wednesday (February 14) and Good Friday (March 29). All other Fridays of Lent (February 16 through March 22) are days of abstinence (no meat). Fast—consume only one full meal. Water may be taken throughout the day Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain. Those who are automatically dispensed from fast and abstinence regulations outside the age limits noted above include: the physically or mentally ill, especially individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also included in the dispensation are women who are pregnant or nursing. In all cases, common sense should prevail and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting
