Registration for Summer Intensive 2018 Religious Education will begin Feb 1st Summer Intensive 1 : July 9 – 13 & 16 – 20 Summer Intensive 2 : August 6 – 10 & 13 - 17
Grades available for the Summer Intensive Program: Grades 1‐6 (those children entering these grades in September 2017) on a first come, first serve basis. Families must be registered ac ve parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Educa on program for at least one year (with the excep on of first graders). However all families must be registered parishioners for at least 1 year prior to enrolling.
Times: Each session will include a Family Orienta on star ng with 12 noon Mass and ending at approximately 2 pm. Session 1: Sunday, 8 July 12 noon Mass ‐ 2 pm Session 2: Sunday, 5 August 12 noon Mass ‐ 2 pm Followed by classes Monday‐ Friday 8:30 am ‐12:30 pm.
Tui on:
From Feb 1st through midnight March 31st the reduced tui on is $250 per child. From April 1st through midnight May 15th the tui on rate of $300 a child will apply.
Program Expecta ons: Each family would be expected to par cipate in 4 intergenera onal events throughout the school year. Including the Advent and/or Lenten Penance and Reconcilia on services. More details are outlined on the Intergenera onal web‐page.

First Communion Meeting Tuesday, February 6 a meeting to discuss First Communion with the 2nd Grade parents. There will be two sessions and you are free to attend whichever is more convenient for you. The first will be at 5:00 p.m. and the second will be at 6:30 p.m. Both will take place in the Theater in the parish center. Each will last approximately a half hour. Please make every effort to attend.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Although it is a Sabbath, Jesus begins the work of the kingdom: teaching, healing and redeeming. Note the response of the people in the synagogue at Capernaum. The author of the Gospel of Mark notes Jesus’ command to the demon, upon which the assembly exclaims, “A new teaching with authority.” But they also question, “What is this?” In the first verse of the Gospel, Jesus was identified as the Son of God. Today the challenge for each of us is: Who is this---for me? This week we celebrate The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (2 February). Simeon and Anna might symbolize paschal mystery living for us: they both long awaited the revelation of the Messiah, their enduring fidelity was rewarded by seeing the Christ, they were both holy. Our lives, too, are to be characterized by awaiting the return of Christ at his second coming; our enduring fidelity will be rewarded, too, by seeing Christ. The link between this expectation and fulfillment is to live lives that are holy. We are “refined,” “purified,” “tested” when we allow Christ to “help” us—when we listen to his word and come to the table to be nourished. We are reminded, however, that church (Temple) and life (“grew and became strong”) are related. The paschal mystery celebrated in word and table is the very same mystery lived in the dying and rising of our everyday life. Paschal mystery living is Temple living. Like Simeon and Anna, our very lives exude the expectation of Christ’s redemption. February 3rd is the Memorial of
Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr. Our parish will bless throats during the regularly scheduled daily Mass. This is a wonderful custom of our church. I would encourage you to keep this custom by coming to the church to have your throat blessed and asking God, through the intercession of Saint Blasé, to continue to protect you from all diseases of the throat. WOW! Many THANKS to all of those who generously participated in our 2017 Christmas Collection. Last weekend we provided an accounting for your review. Please take time to read it. We should be proud of our stewardship efforts. The net result continues to show that those who have participated are very generous and appreciative of the efforts of our parish as we move forward and I say THANK YOU. I would invite each and every person to continue to reflect on how we can grow in our stewardship efforts as we make a return to the Lord for the blessings in our lives especially during these challenging economic times. I am away this weekend on assignment in my role as Diocesan Director of Pilgrimages. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, requested several years ago that I plan a pilgrimage to the Holy Land for priests of the Diocese of Trenton. Twenty priests have registered, and I have been busy arranging a fitting pilgrimage for them. Please pray for us during this pilgrimage. I am grateful to our parish staff and the clergy who graciously cover the sacramentalliturgical responsibilities during my absence. See you next weekend. Have a great week. Another week, another lingering ques on brought forward to be answered. The query this me around, “How is the music for the Mass chosen?”
In the specific realm of The Parish of Saint Mary, the answers to this ques on vary depending upon the day and season. We can, however, break it down into a few easily diges ble parts.
The first place that is looked at for the choosing of music is the Roman Missal. Here, the an phons for the day are prescribed. According to the General Instruc on of the Roman Missal:
In the Dioceses of the United States of America, there are four op ons for the Entrance Chant: (1) the an phon from the Missal or the an phon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum, as set to music there or in another se ng; (2) the an phon and Psalm of the Graduale Simplex for the liturgical me; (3) a chant from another collec on of Psalms and an phons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including Psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms; (4) another liturgical chant that is suited to the sacred ac on, the day, or the me of year, similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop.
When planning the music for a par cular day, we look at the hierarchy above, and, culling from the resources available, choose one that best suits the service of the Mass that day. Some days, like Palm Sunday, we are closer to taking the 1st, and most preferred op on. Other days, like during the Season of Lent, we take the 4th op on, singing a common Gathering Rite for the various Sundays of the season. We take this same approach with the Offertory and Communion an phons, striving to serve a well balanced diet of the sacred chant, classic hymns, and contemporary music.
The second place where there is a choice of music is the se ng of the Psalm a er the First Reading. In the past, we have grown used to singing common psalms in a contemporary se ng, as appropriate to the season. Moving forward, we will be singing the psalm of the day, as its nature is that of a companion to the reading. In choosing the music, we follow the same idea as before, mixing chanted psalms and metrical ones.
Finally, there is the choosing of the sung parts of the Mass. We vary this by season, again striking a balance between styles. We chant the Ordinary during parts of Ordinary Time and Advent/Christmas, and sing contemporary se ngs during Lent/Easter and the remainder of Ordinary Time.
