Why should we sing at Mass? ...A very important question that has fortunately simple answers. We should sing at Mass because the Universal Church points us to do so. One of the driving reasons behind the reforms of the Second Vatican Council was for “Full and active participation in the Mass”. What does this mean? … This means attentive listening to the word of God during the liturgy of the word. This means that when we say “Thanks Be To God”, we truly mean it. This means that when we respond to the Word of the Lord in the psalm, we sing its antiphon or refrain with our whole voice and heart. We watch, listen, and respond in song to the priest during the prayers of the Communion Rite. The Mass is not a spectator sport. We MUST participate. The singing of the Ordinary, (the parts of the Mass that do not change weekly: the Gloria, the Eucharistic Acclamations, etc) is of utmost importance and these parts are to always be sung at EVERY Mass. The singing of the Propers of the Mass (the parts that change: the psalms, the communion antiphon, etc) is a tradition as old as the organized Church itself, and it is one that we carry on today. The singing of the hymns (a tradition borrowed from our Protestant brethren, who borrowed it from the Catholic tradition of singing hymns at the Liturgy of the Hours), although optional, is still important, as the hymns that are chosen for a particular day are meant to re-affirm the teachings of the readings from the day, or the nature of the liturgical season. Don’t know the hymn or song? Listen to the first verse or two and join in later. Think the instruments might be too loud? Not if the entire congregation joins in the singing. Can’t carry a tune in a suitcase? Sing anyway, for the Lord will hear and be glad. CAN carry a tune in a suitcase? Join the choir! Andrew J. The annual celebration of World Marriage Day is on Sunday, February 10, 2019, and National Marriage Week is from February 7 through February 14.
At this special time of year, we recall that it was at a wedding, a joyful celebration of marriage, that Jesus performed his first miracle. In Cana of Galilee he launched his ministry and started on his road to the cross. Marriage is so fundamental to our faith that it is often called the primordial sacrament. It is an efficacious sign of Christ’s love for his bride, the Church.

Outline of Process for completing RE Registration
Summer Intensive: February 1 - March 31 Fall RE Classes: April 1 - May 30
1. Once MOC login has been received, submit a request for student(s) and grades required.
Summer Intensive classes are for students entering grades 1-6. Classes run Monday through Friday for 2 weeks from 8:30 am -12:30 pm. Admission is on a first come first serve basis. Classes closed when they fill. We encourage you to register early. Summer Intensive 1 : July 22 – 26 & 29 – August 2 Summer Intensive 2 : August 12 – 16 & 19 - 23 Summer Tuition remains the same as last year, $300 per student. Summer Registration starts February 1, 2019. There is an Early Registration discount of $50 per student, for those that complete the full process including payment before February 28, 2019 at 12 noon. Summer Registration will end on March 31, 2019 at 12 noon.
Fall Religious Education programming are for students entering grades 1 - 8. st nd Tuesday evening classes for 1 & 2 graders th th Sunday evening sessions for 7 & 8 graders rd th Online program for students in 3 to 6 grade. Fall Tuition remains the same as last year , $250 per student. Fall Registration starts April 1, 2019. There is an Early Registration discount of $50 per
student, for those that complete the full process including payment before April 30, 2019 at 12 noon. Fall Registration will end on May 30, 2019 at 12 noon.
2. Once request is received by RE office, it will be verified and processed, then an invoice will be created for payment, and be emailed back to family. This email/Invoice will include web link to make payments through our Online Giving portal. Please note, a student’s placement is not regarded as certain until payment is made. A final verification will be sent to confirm placement and that the process is complete. Payments will only be through the Saint Mary Online Giving (NO PAYPAL or checks). The Saint Mary Online Giving is not the same interface/portal as My Own Church where sessions and grades are requested. All cancelations are subject to a $10 processing fee.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Living the paschal mystery means that we continually look for the poor, captive, blind, and oppressed among us. We don’t have to look very far! “Today this passage has been fulfilled” is now true only when we ourselves respond to those around us who need a nourishing, strengthening, joyful word. This means that God’s word isn’t something we only hear on Sunday, but becomes a living word in our hearts, inspiring us to be in our very selves living gospels. As we gradually grow into being anointed by the Spirit, we, like Jesus, are the fulfillment of the Scriptures. Our Pastor Emeritus Father Bausch has been hospitalized since Christmas Day. Recognizing his need for privacy and the avoidance of contact with others to shield him from germs etc…I waited for several weeks to visit him. We had a short but very enjoyable visit. He looks very good and is regaining his strength. With his permission I share with you that he has been diagnosed with “acute leukemia”. Father Bausch is most grateful for your many prayers and remembrances. While he enjoys visits, I encourage you to be mindful of his need for personal space during this time. As I write this he is being evaluated for some complications of the heart. He expects to transition from the medical center back home where there is a care facility, and, when/ if needed, hospice care. Father Bausch approaches his 90th Birthday 3 March 2019. Let us give thanks to God for such a priest of God who continues to serve through his prayer even in his time of infirmity. I will keep you posted as I am able.
Saturday, 2 February we will bless candles to be used for the Sacred Liturgy celebrated in our parish. Those wishing to bring candles from their homes to be blessed are encouraged to do so. Please join us for this liturgy at 9:00 am in the Church. Each year 3 February is the optional memorial day of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr. It is customary that the faithful come to the church to have their throats blessed. We will bless throats at the conclusion of each Mass on Sunday, 3 February. I encourage you to keep this wonderful custom by prayerfully participating in the celebration of Eucharist. The Season of Lent begins in early March this year. Start thinking now about how you might enter into this time of prayer and penance. Make time for some private prayer and devotion. Consider celebrating the Eucharist more frequently by participating in daily Mass celebrated in the Lenten Chapel. The Way of the Cross is another opportunity for meditation on the Lord’s Passion and Death. Please mark your calendar for Sunday, 7 April at 3:00 pm in order to participate in our Parish Lenten Penance Service. We will have 15 or so priest confessors for your convenience. Our parish staff members and liturgical leaders will be reaching out to parishioners for participation in the Liturgies of Holy Week, The Triduum, and Easter. Please be open to participating so that we might continue to include as many parishioners as possible. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in payer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
