The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord February 2nd, also known as Candlemas Day, has been celebrated since the 4th century. This feast commemorates the 40th day after Christmas, when Mary travelled with Jesus and Joseph to the temple in Jerusalem, for her ritual purification after the birth of the Lord. It was in the temple that the prophetess Anna and Simeon the Righteous recognized the child as the Messiah. Simeon, who had been told by the Holy Spirit that he shall not see death until he sees the Christ, praises God in the Nunc Dimittis: “Now let your servant go in peace…I have seen your salvation….a light to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel”. In honoring the revelation of Jesus as the light, it is customary for candles to be blessed on this day. In some cultures, the faithful bring candles from their homes to blessed, but more commonly it is candles that will be used in the life of the church in the coming year that are blessed. In our community, we bless the candles that are used for the blessing of throats on the memorial of Saint Blaise (February 3) and the six candles that will flank the altar beginning at Easter. At the conclusion of the Easter Season, these candles are kept separate from others, used as processional candles, and eventually burned in the holy fire at the Easter Vigil the following year. Traditionally, Candlemas marked the end of the Christmas Season, and decorations where often left up until the Eve of Candlemas. In our parish, we keep that custom in a way, continuing the care of the poinsettia that have been placed in the church until this day. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. We shrink from darkness; we don’t like it. We shrink from repentance; we don’t like it either, because to repent means that we must embrace a life of self-giving. Seeing the Light is actually much easier than following the Light! John’s faithfulness in preaching Jesus as the Messiah led him to prison and death. Jesus’ preaching about God’s kingdom at hand led him to the cross and death. If we follow the light, we know what awaits us: dying to self. Yet dying is the only way we ourselves can become the light that shines for others. Following the Light is a metaphor for repentance because the Light takes us where we would rather not go. But it is only this Light that brings us everlasting life. This is why we repent and follow.

Next month the Church observes the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. Traditionally candles are blessed during the mass on this day. We will bless a representative number of candles that will be used in our parish church for our liturgical celebrations. The following day, February 3rd is the memorial of Saint Blase, bishop and it is a custom of the church that throats are blessed on this day. Request student(s) session & class through the MOC portal Once request is received by RE office, it will be verified and processed, then, an invoice will be created for payment, and be emailed back to family. This email/Invoice will include a web link to make payments through the Online Giving interface. Submit payment through the Online Giving link provided in invoice email. Please note, a student’s placement is not regarded as certain until payment is made. It has been the custom in the Diocese of Trenton for many years that the Missionary Childhood Association has been the primary recipient of charitable contributions from students in diocesan grammar schools and religious education programs. Thus, on their behalf we ask your support. All RE families should have received a 'mite box' and prayer card from the Missionary Childhood Association. We ask that, as a family, you make a sacrificial offering to assist those in need by contributing to the mite box during this School Year and pray for those who are in need and seek your support. Towards the end March, count what was collected in your mite box and instead of returning the mite box: please make one check payable to 'St Mary Parish' with the notation 'MCA' in the 'memo box'. Please enclose the check in an envelope and return it with your child or directly to the Parish Office.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: TOTAL ACCOUNTABILITY The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has defined stewardship as a “life of total accountability and responsibility, acknowledging God as Creator and responsibility, acknowledging God as Creator and owner of all.” As we travel our faith journey through the Church Year, following in the footsteps of Jesus as His disciples, let us reflect on how accountable and responsible we have been with the gifts God has given us. Were we the good stewards that we are called to be? Did we give back with increase a portion of what we have received from our abundantly generous God? Have we grown in our faith and shared our time, talent, and treasure with others? It is not too late. “Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.
