LITURGICAL COLORS Throughout the liturgical year, the changing of the color of vestments worn by the clergy (and in some places, the underlaid altar cloth and communion veil) is a visually symbolic way of marking the tone of the celebration. GREEN - Ordinary Time Symbolizes life. Used in Ordinary Time, in which the Gospel readings tell of the story of Jesus’ earthly ministry, laden with parables and other teachable moments. Symbolizes purity, light, glory of God. Used during the joyous seasons of the year, as well as for important Holy Days, and at Masses of Christian Burial. VIOLET - Advent, Lent, Requiem Symbolizes preparation and penance. Used during the penitential seasons, All Souls Day, sometimes used at Masses of Christian Burial. ROSE - Gaudate Sunday, Laetare Sunday Symbolizes rejoicing, or anticipation of great things to come. Used on the penultimate Sundays of the penitential seasons to indicate a shift in mood from that of reflection to looking forward to the coming joyous season, but not fully living in that joy just yet. RED - Passion, Holy Spirit Used on Palm Sunday and Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion, and on feasts or memorials of martyrs, symbolizing the blood shed for the faith. Also used on Pentecost and at Confirmation to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirt. OTHER COLORS GOLD or SILVER may be used as a substitute for White, with gold especially for the Christmas and Easter seasons. Also used as accent colors on vestments with other primary colors. BLACK is sometimes permitted for use at Masses for the Dead, although not common in the United States. BLUE is associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although it is not used on vestments as a primary color, it may be otherwise featured. For example, all clergy in the Diocese of Trenton have cream-colored vestments with gold and blue accents, as the Cathedral is named in honor of the Assumption of Mary.
Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor, 1225-1274 Thomas was the son of a count and a relative of both the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the King of France. At the age of five, his parents sent him to the Benedictine Monastery at Monte Cassino to be educated in the hope that he would eventually become the abbot there. In about 1239, the Benedictines sent Thomas to the University of Naples to complete his education. He disappointed both the Benedictines and his family by joining the Dominicans at Naples in 1244. This move was so strongly opposed by his family that they had him kidnapped and held him in the family castle for over a year in an attempt to dissuade him. Thomas persisted, however, and after more studies in Paris and Cologne with St. Albert the Great, he was ordained around 1250. Continuing his studies, Thomas Aquinas became a master of theology. He then moved on to teaching and writing, first in Paris and then at Naples, Rome, Orvieto, Anagni, and Viterbo. Diaper Drive: What is diaper insecurity? The condition where families cannot afford a sufficient supply of diapers to ensure their children are clean, dry, and healthy. Diaper cannot be obtained with Food Stamps, WIC, or any other federal or state “safety-net” program. Diapers cost approximately $90 per month for one infant. Every child in Monmouth County deserves to be clean, dry, and healthy!

VALENTINE’S DAY COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT 2024 Once again, residents of Monmouth County will have the opportunity to provide Valentine’s Day cards, notes, letters, and special treats for our military members at Earle Naval Base, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Air Force Base along with Veteran facilities in New Jersey. Last year we collected over 5,000 Valentine messages for our beloved military members! Cards may be handmade or purchased but should include a handwritten sentiment acknowledging the love and appreciation for their military service to our country. Each group of cards and treats should be bundled in a Ziploc type bag and handed in to the parish office to obtain a service hour letter. Service hour letter must be picked up at time of Valentine drop off. Here are some examples of sentiments students can write inside the cards. “Happy Valentine’s day to a true patriot” “Happy Valentine’s day to a real hero” “The commitment you’ve made means so much and is so appreciated.” “Sincere thanks for the big sacrifices you’ve made for our nation.” “You deserve thanks every day for your service.” Students may drop cards off at the parish office during operating hours. Project end date is February 1.

Celebrating World Marriage Day 2024 A Message for all DoT Parishes from the Department of Evangelization and Family Life… The Department of Evangelization and Family Life is pleased to provide all parishes with a full set of resources for a very special celebration of World Marriage Day (Sunday, February 11, 2024) and National Marriage Week USA (February 7-14, 2024). We are also spotlighting our “Encouraging Catholic Weddings (ECW)” initiative with our own ECW video series and other resources to encourage engaged couples and those in civil marriages to embrace the beauty of Catholic marriage.
