The Ordering of Ordinary Time This week, the Church has entered Ordinary Time. During Ordinary Time, the Gospel readings are essentially sequential, picking up on one Sunday where we left off the Sunday prior. The same is true of the Epistle, with excerpts being taken sequentially from the Pauline letters to the Corinthians, Ephesians, the letters of Saints James and John, etc. This is where Ordinary comes from - meaning ”ordered”. This provides a strong sense of continuity in the readings for the Sunday congregant. The Gospel narratives, when told in sequence like this, give us a greater understanding of the life of Jesus Christ during his public earthly ministry. Conversely, there is the temptation for one to feel like they are experiencing the same thing week after week. While there are some points to be made there, (for example, the 19th, 20th and 21st Sundays in Ordinary Time, Year B, all have Psalm 34: “Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord” proclaimed), we must remember that the repetition serves the purpose of reaffirming our faith and why we come to Mass each and every weekend, to worship God communally and receive the Holy Eucharist.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Please arrive earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks, Hand Sanitizer, and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the
Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side. Remove mask (and gloves) as you approach the Eucharist; put mask back in place as you return to your pew Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday). We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms, etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able. We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass. NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. 2021-2022 Religious Education Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the possible exception of first grader families). This includes the New Parishioner Orientation meeting. Copies of each student’s Baptismal certificate and record of previously completed Religious Education classes (if applicable) and sacraments must be received by the office when registering in our program for the first time. Please be aware that children entering grades 2-8 in Sept 2021 must have completed and passed their previous Religious Education grade work before they can be registered for the next school year. Additionally registration/class enrollment will not be processed until all paperwork is in the office. Returning Student who do not have a copy of their Baptismal Certificate on file in the office WILL NOT be secured in a class for the 2021 - 2022 term.
Summer Intensive - Grades 1 - 6: Classes run Monday through Friday for 2 weeks from 8:30 am -12:30 pm (on Campus) or 9 am - 12 noon (Google Classroom). Admission is on a first come first serve basis. Classes close as they fill. We encourage you to register early. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We cannot truly be disciples of Christ unless we, too, wait to hear God’s call and respond by transforming our lives, evidenced in the simple willingness to be obedient to God’s will. This means more than keeping commandments; it means that our whole lives are directed to waiting and listening for God’s self-revelation. Sometimes this revelation comes through others—perhaps in their cry for help. Sometimes the revelation comes through prayer in which we take some serious time to listen to God. Sometimes the revelation comes through liturgy during a homily or at the general intercessions which might nudge us to get out of ourselves and reach out to others in need. However the revelation or call comes, if we respond we will be transformed—becoming living embodiments of Christ’s dying and rising. Then, to us, Christ says, “You are N.,” which is translated Christ. This weekend our country observes the Martin Luther King Jr holiday. It is a time for us to recall those prophetic leaders among us and the lasting impact their lives have had on our nation. May we always work for peace in our communities and pray for peace in our world. The US Catholic Bishops have consistently, for the past 35 years, called Roman Catholics to consciously work to end racial inequality. Recent events in our country continue to highlight the need for a recommitment to stronger race relations while at the same time an increase of respect for those women and men in law enforcement. These are trying times for us as Americans. Our religious beliefs can help us to make our way forward as voices for peace in pursuit of justice. This week the Church prays in a special way for the restoration of unity among all Christians. This
is an important part of our public witness to the world. The divisions that have emerged throughout the centuries are a contradiction to the life of communion that Christ calls the Church to be in the World. We observe the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. The whole idea of conversion is not something that we like to talk about or even think about. Yet, conversion is at the heart of Christian life…dying to the old ways of self and rising to news ways. It is a slow process that unfolds before us when we remain focused on the important matters of life and how faith helps us to interpret the everyday events of our lives. This week our country also observes the anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision granting widespread access to abortion on demand. Our bishop has asked us to fervently pray for an end to this on demand practice of ending human life. During this Year of Saint Joseph we turn to him as head of the Holy Family and Patron of the Universal Church for intercession. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton will offer a live broadcast Mass. Check other parts of the bulletin for details. We begin the liturgical Season of Ordinary Time for a few weeks before the Lenten Journey begins this year. Ash Wednesday is 17 February. Perhaps these weeks can be a good opportunity to prayerfully reflect on your own spiritual life and what you would like to commit to and omit from in your life? Were we the good stewards that we are called to be? Did we give back with increase a portion of what we have received from our abundantly generous God? Have we grown in our faith and shared our time, talent, and treasure with others? It is not too late. “Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. Message from Bishop of Trenton David O’Connell As the new year begins, there are many issues in society that challenge our Catholic moral and social teachings. Opposition to abortion remains our “pre-eminent priority.” During the month of January when we acknowledge the 48th anniversary of the fateful Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision, I invite the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Trenton to join one another in a common prayerful response: (1) pray the rosary daily for the rest of the month for an end to abortion in our country; (2) pray the newly created “Novena to St. Joseph” to end abortion that will be published on our parish and diocesan websites each day, January 14 through 22; (3) pray and fast to end abortion on the actual anniversary date, January 22, as parishes celebrate Masses for the legal protection of the unborn. Since COVID precautions will restrict our usual participation in the annual March for Life in Washington on January 29, I will celebrate Mass online that day and many parishes will celebrate Masses in churches for all these intentions. As a Diocese, as parishes, let us pray for an end to abortion, for the legal protection of the unborn and in thanksgiving to God for the gift of human life. Thank you. Bishop O’Connell

Diocesan-Wide Virtual Cana Rosary for Marriage (February 7 - February 13, 2021; 7 pm) To commemorate World Marriage Day (Sunday, February 14) and National Marriage Week (February 7 – 14), the Diocese of Trenton will host a special livestreamed event for all Catholic families – The Cana Rosary for Marriage - from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm each evening, Sunday, February 7 through Saturday, February 14, 2021. This recitation of the rosary and reflection on marriage will be led by a different couple each evening; it will help all couples rely on our Most Holy Mother Mary to assist with their greatest needs and bring them closer to the Lord. RETROUVAILLE: REDISCOVER THE LOVE IN YOUR MARRIAGE Tens of thousands of couples have healed their marriages through Retrouvaille (pronounced Retro-vy). If you know anyone who could benefit from this program, please pass this on. Couples learn to build communication skills and to increase intimacy.
