Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org The Ordering of Ordinary Time During Ordinary Time, the Gospel readings are essentially sequential, picking up on one Sunday where we left off the Sunday prior. The same is true of the Epistle, with excerpts being taken sequentially from the Pauline letters to the Corinthians, Ephesians, the letters of Saints James and John, etc. This is where Ordinary comes from - meaning ”ordered”. This provides a strong sense of continuity in the readings for the Sunday congregant. The Gospel narratives, when told in sequence like this, give us a greater understanding of the life of Jesus Christ during his public earthly ministry. Conversely, there is the temptation for one to feel like they are experiencing the same thing week after week. While there are some points to be made there, (for example, the 19th, 20th and 21st Sundays in Ordinary Time, Year B, all have Psalm 34: “Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord” proclaimed), we must remember that the repetition serves the purpose of reaffirming our faith and why we come to Mass each and every weekend, to worship God communally and receive the Holy Eucharist. The astute observer will note that Ordinary time begins on a Monday, following the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, making this Sunday the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, as it is the start of the second week of this season. Ordinary time lasts until Lent, and then resumes after Pentecost. The music during this time also has periods of great variety or repetition as well. Some weeks, the antiphons for the entrance or communion may be very similar and certain hymns may repeat often, whereas others are more “once-a-year” offerings, such as for the Transfiguration, Presentation, or the feasts of saints which occur during this time. This is also a period where the hymns have a more generic theme in terms of scriptural reference, focusing on more “big picture” ideas of Christ’s message, rather than recalling specific events.

Saint of the Week: Anthony the Abbot, Ascetic Anthony lived in an out-of-the-way place, a desert in Egypt, where he spent his time in prayer and meditation on the mysteries of God. When people came to him for wisdom, he reminded them that faith is not something to be proved but it is a gift which comes to us from God. His life of fasting and prayer was an example for many. “If you think me wise,” he once said, “become what I am, for we ought to imitate the good... become what I am, for I am a Christian." Anthony reminds us to pay attention to what God wants in our lives. He followed the inner promptings of the Holy Spirit into the monastery. The causes of falls in the elderly include such things as muscle weakness, poor balance and vision, lack of confidence at moving about, and the effect of medication, walking on uneven ground, over-reaching, or over stepping. Tai Chi is a low impact, weight bearing exercise; and with regular Tai Chi practice, it helps build internal strength, reduce falls, and improve the quality of life. Barbara Schaflin, certified instructor of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention; Diabetes; Memory; and Rehabilitation/Rejuvenation, has taught 103 participants this past year in the various disciplines. Liturgy of The Word Dismissal The Liturgy of The Word Dismissal is the practice of having the children, ages 4-12, leave the Sunday assembly during the Liturgy of the Word and gather in a separate environment to engage in the Liturgy of the Word at a level more appropriate to the children’s understanding. The purpose of making the liturgical experience more accessible to the assembled children is to nourish their faith experience and to affirm their value as important participants in the liturgy of God’s Word.

The retreat will replace the regularly scheduled class times for that grade, that week (no class for 8th grade on 2/6 or 2/7, no class for 7th grade on 2/27, 2/28). Both retreats will begin with 12:00 Mass and ending at approximately 3:00pm.

Men’s Morning Office The Thursday Men’s Morning Office has been meeting since 1981 when it was formed by now Pastor Emeritus William J. Bausch. As of September 2021, we have about 20 men meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am in the Chapel for prayer. We usually conclude our prayer service by 7:30 am, and then enjoy some coffee, donuts & camaraderie for 15-20 minutes before all are on their way. With an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+, we welcome any men in the Parish or cohort to come join us any Thursday morning for prayer & fellowship! He was at St. Mary’s in Middletown for 10 years and we are happy that he has “made his way” to St. Mary’s Colts Neck!

Many of us have heard of RCIA, but never really understood the process. Fr. Mike will enlighten everyone and answer any questions that arise. Please note that the rosary is prayed in the “former chapel” at 11:30 a.m. This is a lovely tradition that the Guild established several years ago and we look forward to many participants. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) is at noon and Fr. Mike will begin at 12:30. Every month, the Guild collects items for various organizations and it is heartwarming to see the kindness of our members in the huge amount that always appears! In February, we will be collecting toiletries for Fulfill and we thank you for your generosity.

Today we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Belief entails a Who rather than a What. Our own encounters with Jesus (in prayer, through others, in struggling with daily dying) are truly epiphanies of God’s glory which also invite us to respond to divine Presence with belief. These epiphany signs might come in many ways—through others in a cry for help, in a lonely person’s plea for companionship, in the spontaneous laughter of delight, in the beauty of nature. The challenge to us is to see these as revelations of God’s glory, as epiphanies of God’s love for us, and an opportunity to respond in belief. Yes, these common, ordinary signs of God’s love and glory are all around us. By responding to other persons (recognizing them as revelations of God to us) we also become signs of God’s in-breaking, epiphanies for others. We ourselves are the good wine kept until after Jesus’ ascension when we take up Jesus’ mission as disciples. Living the paschal mystery means that we empty ourselves in order to be filled with the goodness of God’s glory.
As a way for us to offer the greatest level of accountability to you, a report of our 2021 Christmas Collection will be included in the coming week’s bulletin for your review. Once again our Advent Giving Programs were a tremendous success. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND SHARING. I would like to remind you of the continued need for food each and every week. We have a large bin in the gathering area for you to deposit non-perishable food items that can be delivered to local agencies for distribution. We are really good for the “big holidays”. I think we need to be more conscious that the need exists year round, perhaps even more so when there is less attention. Thank you for helping us to make a difference in our Monmouth county communities.
As we begin the Season of Ordinary Time let us be mindful of the need for all of us to gather for the regular celebration of Eucharist. It is the Eucharist that remains the fundamental act of the Christian Community. How we prepare for Eucharist, how we dress, what time we arrive, how we sing and prayerfully participate in the prayers of the mass all speak of our faith and the reverence that we must model for one another. To many, thank you for all that you do to make our liturgical prayer meaningful to all who gather with us. I would encourage anyone who wishes to become more involved to please do so by contacting any of our parish staff persons. The liturgy is the responsibility of the entire community of faith. Let us always be willing to give our very best as we adore and praise the Lord during our celebra-
This week we observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 18-25 January. Let us pray for all Christian People, that God might lead us to overcome the scandal of division that scars the body of Christ. We have made significant progress these past 50 years or so. However, there is much more to be done. Let us be open to God’s grace as we pray for greater tolerance among Christians and a willingness to overcome those historic divisions. Last week we made available about pending legislation in the NJ Legislature that would greatly extend restrictions regarding abortions in our state. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton has communicated that Plenary Indulgences may be attained as we pray on the Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade landmark Supreme Court Decision. Let us continue to support all those who are pregnant as well as a greater reverence for all human life from conception to natural death. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.
