Diocesan Mass for Life Monday, January 22, 2018 Cathedral in Trenton at 9:30 am Bishop O’Connell will celebrate the Mass for Life on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Cathedral in Trenton. This will be the 45th Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Immediately following, the congrega on will be invited to process to the Statehouse for the annual Rally for Life, organized by New Jersey Right to Life. The Rally for Life will begin at 11:00 am and end at approximately 1 pm.

Mass for Life/Rally for Life in Trenton Monday, January 22, 2018 – 45th Anniversary of Roe v Wade Join hundreds of people from all over New Jersey who oppose the killing of the innocent unborn through abortion as we PRA Y and RALLY for LIFE! This day will be Pro-Life, Pro-Woman and Pro-Family! Join Bishop O’Connell for a Mass for Life at 9:30 am at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, 151 N. Warren St., Trenton. There is a reasonable public parking garage on Warren St. just down the street and across from the Cathedral. After Mass, we will process to the Statehouse Annex, 131 W. January 14, 2018 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time The two disciples who were with John in today's Gospel did not yet know Jesus. John knew they sought the Messiah, and he understood his mission to point the way to the Lord. In the first reading, Eli realized that the Lord was calling Samuel and told him how to respond when called. Saint Paul witnessed to the Good News of Jesus to the people in Corinth, and continued to show them how to live as Christian people. John, Eli, and Paul grasped that, as people of faith, we are called to show others the way to the Lord. Who helps you be attentive to God's presence and to respond in faith? THE LAMB OF GOD "Behold the Lamb of God!" We hear this phrase every Sunday at Mass, but there's a good chance that many Roman Catholics do not know who in the Bible originally spoke it. The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. In today's Gospel reading, John proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of John's own disciples then follow Christ. A little bit later Andrew, who heard John and then followed Jesus, brings his brother Simon to be re-named Cephas, or Peter. A careful look at these Bible verses shows us the mission of everyone baptized into the Body of Christ: we must always proclaim our faith in Christ, so that others will follow him. We may not know how the will of God might work through those we bring to Christ; that is not the point. The point is that our ongoing mission as a church is to bring others to Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
HERE I AM. SPEAK, FOR YOUR SERVANT IS LISTENING The Lord does not only call people like Samuel and the two disciples. God calls each of us. We must be attentive to God's presence in prayer, sacred scripture, the sacraments, interactions with others, the beauty of creation. We are to grow in willingness to respond, to live as God's people in the daily circumstances of our lives. Eli's guidance to Samuel is for us as well: with an open heart and mind, we do well to say to God, "Speak, for your servant is listening." Like the two disciples in today's Gospel, we must be ready to set aside whatever might stand in the way of our relationship with Christ and our Christian living. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We cannot truly be disciples of Christ unless we, too, wait to hear God’s call and respond by transforming our lives, evidenced in the simple willingness to be obedient to God’s will. This means more than keeping commandments; it means that our whole lives are directed to waiting and listening for God’s self-revelation. Sometimes this revelation comes through others—perhaps in their cry for help. Sometimes the revelation comes through prayer in which we take some serious time to listen to God. Sometimes the revelation comes through liturgy during a homily or at the general intercessions which might nudge us to get out of ourselves and reach out to others in need. However the revelation or call comes, if we respond, we will be transformed—becoming living embodiments of Christ’s dying and rising. Then, to us, Christ says, “You are N.,” which is translated Christ. This weekend our country observes the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. It is a time for us to recall those prophetic leaders among us and the lasting impact their lives have had on our nation. May we always work for peace in our communities and pray for peace in our world. The US Catholic Bishops have consistently, for the past 35 years, called Roman Catholics to consciously work to end racial inequality. Recent events in our country continue to highlight the need for a recommitment to stronger race relations while at the same time an increase of respect for those women and men in law enforcement. These are trying times for us as
Americans. Our religious beliefs can help us to make our way forward as voices for peace in pursuit of justice. Next week the Church prays in a special way for the restoration of unity among all Christians. This is an important part of our public witness to the world. The divisions that have emerged throughout the centuries are a contradiction to the life of communion that Christ calls the Church to be in the World. We observe the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. The whole idea of conversion is not something that we like to talk about or even think about. Yet, conversion is at the heart of Christian life…dying to the old ways of self and rising to new ways. It is a slow process that unfolds before us when we remain focused on the important matters of life and how faith helps us to interpret the everyday events of our lives. We begin the liturgical Season of Ordinary Time for a few weeks before the Lenten Journey begins this year. Ash Wednesday is 14 February. The Little Black Reflection Books have been ordered and ready for distribution. Perhaps these weeks can be a good opportunity to prayerfully reflect on your own spiritual life and what you would like to commit to and omit from in your life?
