The Baptism of the Lord A “time jump” is a plot device used in many modern movies and television programs. One episode or movie in a series may take place several days, months, or years after the previous one. Sometimes this even occurs within a single episode or movie. But this is nothing new - many older novels such as Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables span many decades in their story telling. And - we experience a similar effect in our Sunday Gospel readings during the Christmas Season. We begin with the Nativity of the Lord, and the recounting of Jesus’ birth. The Sunday after Christmas is the Holy Family, where we jump to Jesus as an older child, staying behind in Jerusalem. One week after Christmas, the visitation of the shepherds is proclaimed on the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. In years where there occurs a second Sunday between Christmas and Epiphany, we jump back to the gospel proclaimed on Christmas Day: “The word became flesh and dwelt among us”. On the Epiphany, we have the visit of the magi from the east, and the Baptism of the Lord jumps 30 years to Jesus’ baptism by John in the Jordan River. A very interesting timeline to consider. Some are confused by it all, but we shouldn’t be. The story of our salvation takes some detours, but the result remains the same. The Baptism of the Lord also causes some confusion. It is at the same time the end of the Christmas Season and the beginning of Ordinary Time. We sing Christmas Carols, but also recount a time in the life of Jesus when he was 30 years old. The Joy of Christmas remains but we also are prepared to start numbering our days again as we get closer to the season of Lent. As it says in the Gospel of John, “Do not let your hearts be troubled”. Keep Christ alive in your in hearts at Christmas and all the year long.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The mystery of an infant birth is played out in the even greater mystery of our own participation in Jesus’ identity and mission. In our baptism we receive our identity as sons and daughters of God and our mission—entry into Christ’s paschal mystery. This dying and rising is the stuff of our Christian living. What enables us to continue to say yes to such living is that we know the dying always leads to rising, death inevitably to life. We know this with certainty because Jesus was baptized, his identity as beloved Son was revealed, he was faithful to his mission to bring forgiveness and justice, he died and then rose. The pattern of Jesus’ life is the pattern of our own lives. Paschal mystery living is as concrete as Jesus’ life and mission. For example, like Jesus, we are living justly when we die to selfishness and rise to the needs of others. Like Jesus, we are living justly when we die to selfishness and rise to the needs of others. Like Jesus, we are showing no partiality when we die to judgments and categorizing or labeling others and rising to see all people as beloved children of God. Like Jesus, we do good when we forgive; we heal others when we offer kind words instead of words that tear down, or help another without being asked. The Liturgical Season of Christmas concludes this weekend. We will now begin Ordinary Time, Green Vestments, simpler ritual, no
incense. Ordinary Time continues until the First Sunday of Lent. We have made the transition to Christ Chapel for the celebration of Daily Mass. Change is never easy. It is important that we remain open to new possibilities. I have received several questions about the snow fence that has been installed a the corner of Highway 34 and Phalanx Road. Here’s the scoop. Highway 34 is a state road; Phalanx is a county road; Flock is a township road. We were approached a year or so ago about erecting a snow fence to increase visibility and safety during a snowstorm. We had a good conversation and achieved agreement to the terms. The snow fence is owned by the county, installed by the county, removed by the county, and stored by the county. I expect the fencing to be removed prior to Holy Week and installed again in November. This is another way in which public/private partnerships can increase safety and the quality of life. While it is not the most aesthetically pleasing visual it is my hope that we can accomplish the same objectives using more natural means in the future. Thanks for asking about it.
